A recipe for snowdrop wine ( should anyone want to make some :-\ ;D )
Two and a half pints of snowdrop flowers
1 gal. water
1 lb. rice
3 lb. sugar
half lb. raisins
three quarters of an oz. yeast
Boil the snowdrops in the water for 10 minutes, add the rice and boil for a further 10 minutes.
Strain the liquid over the sugar and raisins.
When cool, add the yeast and put the lot in a fermentation jar.
After 10 days strain off the liquid into another jar, leaving behind the raisins and sediment.
Ferment to a finish.
God knows what it tastes like :)
If using 'E A Bowles' it may work out to be the most expensive liquid the world has ever known :o
-
For those using new money 2.5 pints = 1.4L
-
If anyone ever makes this , please let me know what it tastes like.
-
I don't know if the species of snowdrop you use would make a difference. Some do smell better than others thats for sure.
-
having plenty around me I could knock some up for Sunday, might be a little "young" ;D
any volunteers for tasting?
-
We might need some thing to wash down all the cake :o I dont think it would taste very nice after just a few days :-X
-
free trip to A&E included ;)

I suspect that might be more cake.....

Is that just for the people stuffed full of cake ? or those poisoned by dodge home brew ? ;)
-
That is a standard home-made wine recipe such as I still use - although not with added snowdrops!. But I thought that snowdrops (like many similar bulbs) were stuffed full of galantamine which is a narcotic and rather dangerous to take in any form - even diluted into wine.
-
it would be an interesting trip to A&E, trying to explain cake poisoning... probably easier than snowdrop moonshine :)
the photos on John's blog would be different.

I would think you would just use the petals and discard any other parts of the flower. Bit like eatting a daffodil flower, fine as long as you just eat the petals. (Daffodil sandwhich is quite nice, just the petals in some bread )

That they would :o

I was actually given a bottle of snowdrop wine by a German group I did a tour for a few years ago, but they did explain it only had snowdrops on the label, kept the bottle but it got recycled by mistake :(
having told my boss Sunday will be low key I think sampling poisonous brews is not a good idea, sirens and blue lights might make it a one off event ;)

having googled that & the side effects :o I think I'll stick to guinness.

Galantamine can cause lucid dreams. I have enough of those already, maybe my snowdrops are to blame ???

So perhaps not a recipe for the "Cook's Corner" thread then. :D

Galanthamine is being used to help alzheimer sufferers .
Galantamine cannot cure dementia or Alzheimer's disease but it can slow down the progression of dementia and can help to ease the symptoms of memory loss, confusion and changes in behaviour. It works by increasing the amount of a natural chemical in the brain called acetylcholine which is known to be lower in people suffering from Alzheimer's dementia..
The alcohol might have the opposite affect ;)

I guess it depends on the cook ?

memory loss, confusion and changes in behaviour.
that pretty much sums up my guided walks ;D
drops are to blame.

the drops should help with memory loss !
-
ah, I was hoping to blame it all on something other than age :-\
-
I could try it on my mother-in-law,she is suffering from alzheimer disease :-\

Bring it on then. ;D
