Title: Snowdon Lily
Post by: Nick_the_grief on February 15, 2011, 03:52:47 PM
A few years ago I was lucky enough to see one of these growing in the wild (and boy, was it wild!!). As it's something I've always fancied I've stumbled across some seed of them on Chiltern seed so I ordered them.  Anyone else tried them from seed?  If so, anything I should know - looking at where I saw them I guess they won't need the benefit of my heated bench  ;D

Lloydia serotina is such a little charmer but I can't say we see it grown much...... hardly ever on the Scottish show benches for instance.

I don't know why  :-\

I couldn't spell Lloydia  ;D

It's beautiful in the flesh so to speak - I was nearly blown off the side of snowdon though  ::)

You know, Nick, this might well be something that would enjoy life in a crevice in your planned crevice bed. I know you plan a cover and the Lloydia wouldn't really need that but in crevice conditions it might be quite happy. Worth a try, I reckon.
This has got me wondering if it might enjoy life outdoors in a crevice in Aberdeen...... :D

Well I wouldn't hold your breath Daveyp - It's my first attempt at alpines from seed  ;D

You would think if they like life on snowdon that there would be a few in in the Highlands or the Gramps, but I've never heard of them any other place than Snowdon (in this country anyway).  I wondered about the SHed bed, I could always put it on the outer edge and in the shade of some taller bits of stone to give some shade.  And if they do come from seed at least I'l have more than one (hopefully) to play with.

Have you had any success Nick ?.

I've had a recent germination and am wondering how difficult they are to keep going.

Cheers Dave.

Is wondering whether the Snowdon Lily seedling survived after germination??
