John, I'm consoled to see that your L. aloides did what my L. bulbifera did in the greenhouse -- long stem swoops off to the side. I'd contribute a few more pictures but I can't get to that greenhouse for the ice and snow burying the steps down into it. This picture is from a couple weeks ago.

Jim - The greenhouse is so jammed with plants full sun might help. Also it tends to get a bit warm on sunny cold days when venting is impossible. Maybe constant cold too would keep the stems and leaves upright but I may be grasping at straws. Ditto for the Muscari.
Same here, a perilous journey to the greenhouse on a sheet of ice.
johnw - +2c & sun

BTW Jim - No drooping problem with Cyrtanthus brachyschyphus in the past. 50+ flower stalks on the rise, some just opening and stalks are poker straight.
johnw - +3c at 23.05, heavy rain expected.
-
John,
50 buds on C. brachyschyphus! We really need to see a picture of this. Sounds wonderfull.

I noticed (the last time I got into the greenhouse a week ago) that the Lachenalia sitting right up against the glass have compact, erect, much healthier-looking scapes. This includes the aloides and a bunch of un-named hybrids from South Africa.
-
Jim:
Do you think they liked the cold or higher light level?

Here you go Jamie and apologies as one pic is with flash, as it was night time under fluorescents.
Cyrtanthus brachyschyphus in a 30cm pot. Another wave of flower stems are on the rise.

John,
truly amazing. One forgets to what for a level one can elevate this otherwise simple and beautiful bulbs. I'm gonna have to try this species, again. I lost my seedlings to an early freeze a couple of years ago. What kind of a soil mix are you using? 50% grit to compost or still lighter?

Two plant portraits from the garden as the summer season tapers off (:():
Herbertia pulchella - ready for business;
Tigridia pavonia - making a bold statement (...as usual!).

Fantastic Rogan :)

Couldn't think of where else to put these - a few pics from the greenhouse today - Narcissus cantabricus petunioides and Crocus paschei, and a general view of a plunge.
-
Ranunculus kochii was flowering here today.
-
I think I would be placing the N. c. petunioides at the front of the plunge Alex. On a pedestal, with a gold plaque and ribbons and tinsel and a scattering of diamonds and emerals around it. Not that it's anything special of course. ;D

;D
Very nice Alex.
C. paschei is a favourite of mine but thought I'd lost it last year to combined cold and damp, so was delighted lately to find a nice fresh crop of seedlings.
Is that a C. heuffelianus form in your second picture, on the right?
-
Alex - "the greenhouse'? It looks like a wonder of technology and neatness! It even has a notch engineered out of the plunge to accommodate the vent openers! :o
-
Hi Anne - well, i couldn't open them otherwise! Your C. baytopiorum are in that picture, one left of the top right (as you look at it in the pic) corner.
The C. heuffelianus is 'Carpathian Wonder' from Janis.
It is likely I may have the odd spare N. cantabricus petunioides if anyone is very keen? I can't be sending lots of parcels all over the place, but could do one or two...

OK, enough takers for the Narcissus now - unless anyone has an amazing swap, of course ;)

Romulea tetragona
-
Beautiful Romulea Michael. I've just taken a pot of germinated seed (sown 19 October 2010) into the greenhouse from my open seed frame today. I'll compare notes with you around 2013/14 ;D
-
;D ;D ;D
-
David,
Maybe you could bring the pot in and show them the picture on the computer (or take a copy of the pic out to them). It might show them their potential and they might hurry along and flower earlier? ??? ;D
-
:-X It's quite a quick one from seed David ;)
-
a pot from late march last year ;D I may have to sow some more seed this year though :-[
-
Thanks Peter. Provided I don't kill 'em in the meantime I can look forward to next year ;D
