I'd like to introduce you not alpine but beautiful plants. Most of gardens have them here in Russia. Saying phlox, people mean Phlox paniculata.
The species is very popular here since 1930s. We have had selectionists who created some unique varieties.
I was not phlox fan until visited my friends garden with old large clumps of phloxes. Now I have a collection of about 80 varieties (some collectors have much more). And I love them very much for long and colorful bloom and nostalgic smell.

Blue phloxes. Of course they are not true blue. All of them have some shade of purple. But at the twilight time they change colors to blue and become really fantastic!

Beautiful photographs again Olga.
And that's a stunning range of colour forms, do you have room in your garden for anything else? ;D
-
I had no idea there were so many different colours and shapes, the last pic reminds me of geraniums.
They are beautiful.
Olga, do you have problems with mildew on the phlox?
-
The species Phlox paniculata is too big for my rock garden, but wooow, Olga what a fantastic selection !!!
-
What a wonderful collection Olga. My mother used to grow a dozen or so but I doubt if even a handful are available here now. The scent was delicious.
-
Thanks for posting Olga. Phlox paniculata is my favourite perennial.
-
:o :o unbelievable.
Do you grow all? I sould read the text before posting! ::)
-
Olga, I love Phloxes and your pictures are magnificent as usual.
Always hesitated to show Phlox here on the Forum. Thanks for showing!
I have one question: Do you grow the real Phlox Uspech? I mean the one mentioned in the Gagarin Gaganow book, 50 cms. high.
The one offered here and in Germany (and shown in books) is not that one, but grows up to 80 cms.
I have once seen both forms nearby, but the grower discarded all the lower ones because he could not use them for cutting.
I was told that they were imported from Lithuania.
The higher one also goes under the name Laura here and nut Uspech!but they are the same
-
Olga,
We grow a few here in Australia as well. You have some stunning colours. I've not seen them into the blue-mauves that you show. Thanks so much for showing us some of your collection. 8)
-
Olga,
you have a great collection of phlox! :o
I used to grow them when I lived in Boronia (an outer eastern suburb of Melbourne) but they got infected with ?mycoplasma which turned the flowers green.
I saw a lot of them in gardens in Louisiana when I lived there.
cheers
fermi

Thank you all! :)
do you have room in your garden for anything else? ;D
is too big for my rock garden
Peter, Ger
:) Yes, I have many other plants. And I stopped to collect phloxes only because of their size. :(
Olga, do you have problems with mildew on the phlox?
Helen,
No I don’t. Me garden is ideal for this species. I have some problems with fungi in wet years but not with mildew.
Always hesitated to show Phlox here on the Forum
Luit,
I am too. But I asked Maggi. :)
in the Gagarin book
Gaganov.
Yes, I grow it. And it is true because I got it from Gaganov’s granddaughter with many other sorts. Truly it never grows only 50 sm. Usually it grows up to 80 sm and up to 100 sm in wet years. Laura and Uspech are the same, yes, I have both.
Paul,
Blue phloxes are one of Russian selection lines.

Smoked phloxes.
This is another line of selection. This kinds of phloxes are of different colours and have grey spoys and stripes at their petals/ That names smoke. First smoked phloxes were selected by P.P.Gaganov in 1940s.

Always hesitated to show Phlox here on the Forum
Luit,
I am too. But I asked Maggi.
Well, you know many ( most??) of us do not only grow alpine plants, and even if we do, we tend to be an open minded bunch of people with a very wide interest in plants and gardens of all sorts, nature, wildlife, and our fellow forumists - so why not have a wide a spread of pages in the forum as possible ? :D
If someone has no interest they need not pay any attention, indeed, they need hardly even know it is here.... but those who have enquiring minds can look, learn and enjoy ...... 8) 8)
-
I certainly enjoy your photos, Olga. Phlox paniculata is a favourite of mine and I grow as many I can find place for, mostly unnamed varieties from old gardens.
Your collection is fantastic :o, Amazing colour variation.
-
Love your pics Olga, many thanks. What a wonderful range of colour in this genus! I bought a plant of Phlox maculata a few years ago and it grows very well for me, and also doesn't suffer from the same amount of mildew as the paniculatas in my garden. Here are a couple of pictures I took last summer.
-
Intriguing to see this highly popular tall phlox, and how it has been developed and hybridized outside of the USA. Olga, some fantastic variations & colors in the forms you show. There continues to be high interest in these "old fashioned" plants in the US. Here the main problem with these beauties is mildew, so breeders have been working on mildew-proof varieties. They have also been working on compact habit, with many of the newer ones half the height of the older varieties.
I have to admit being really attracted to the blue ones, so had to look up Blue Paradise to see if it's available here, and yes it is! Here are some nursery links; I find these interesting as one can glean bits of plant culture information, and one site lists the source of that cultivar. Thanks for showing these.

I'm very fond of Blue Paradise. It seems to be a healthy phlox and the colour is nice. My photo is taken on a grey, rainy day. The flowers appear more red/violet in bright sunshine.

in the Gagarin book
Gaganov.

Olga, this was just a slip of the pen. Should have known better because the book was just behind me.
Mr. Gagarin must have made more impressions on me than Mr. Gaganow in my younger years to make this mistake ;D.
I show here another picture of Phlox out of Gartenschönheit 1934.
This shows a Phlox which looks probably like as P. Peppermint Twist of nowadays???
See second picture:Phlox Schwerin's Flagge

Thanks again! :)
Gunilla,
Lots of unnamed phloxes grow in our gardens too. Their manes are only ‘white’ or ‘pink’. But they are very popular.
Chris,
Your phloxes are pretty! We grow kind of P. maculate with striped flowers ‘Natasha’:

Beautiful flowers, Olga, with such colourful display! And very nice pictures as always. I use this Phlox as often as I can get them in my flowershop works as they give a very refreshing look in the arrangements.

Mark
"old fashioned" plants are very right words. :)
I know many people having problems with mildew on phloxes. I wonder I do not.
Luit
There are some striped-flowered phloxes. Their flowers looks similar separately from whole plant.
Very interesting to look at drawing from old book! Some kind are still grown here, Graf Zeppelin and Wiking for example.

Thanks Olga, I wish I had more space :).
Yes. Me too. :-\

Love your Olga Natascha! :)
At the risk of going off on a tangent. some of these remind me of an old carnation my mother had, called 'The Monk.' It had muted stripes of red and smokey violet and grey. I wish I could find it again.

Olga, Graf Zeppelin is still grown in Holland as well and I believe Wiking is in Germany, but never saw it.
'Sirenevoe Chudo' seems to be a beautiful one with the big flowers.
And I like the small flowering Ivan Zaria and 'Zolushka' .(AND ALL OTHERS TOO) :D ! Do you have pictures of the whole plant? Would be nice to see some??

I make images of whole plant rarely. Not this kinds. :-\
'Ivan Zaria' has not the smallest flowers. :) Medium I think. But the shape of petals are unusual. And is is very red. Burning I can say.
Some phloxes else. :)
