-
pass! The garden that we will be visiting was on Gardener's World a few weeks back - Snape Cottage. The actual venue for the lectures and sales will be close by maybe in Gillingham.
-
Gillingham is in Dorset, next County to the East?
-
oops! Will you attend?
All things are possible but being only a humble male of the species and having to keep a female of the species happy as well I can't see me getting to East Lambrook on the 9th Feb and to the Dorset event on the 16th. Maureen likes going to East Lambrook because the soup and the cake are both first class! So, all things being taken into account, and if I were a betting man, I would put my house on East Lambrook, and the contents of my bank account on Dorset!!!!! ::)
-
well yes the food at ELM is by far better than the crap dished up by schools at the Galanthus Gala. I might be at ELM next year but not lecturing

I'll buy you a coffee and maybe some cake!, and then you can take Maureen round the garden and try convincing HER that there are differences between various Snaedreeps!

The AGS Ulster Group snowdrop day is Saturday February 16th with three or four gardens open
-
May i suggest a visit to the Netherlands on Februari the 17th. Snowdropgala at the Zaanse schans, see www.snowdrop.info.
If somebody would like to visit my garden and some areas in the wild please call.
-
Gerard, the link you give is not correct, I think.
-
Sorry youre right, actually it is www.sneeuwklokjes.info but for my foreign friends its www.snowdrop.nl.
-
Thank you, Gerard, now we can find the site. I wish you success with the event.
-
I spoke to East Lambrook Manor this afternoon and hear still have some tickets for their event. Have you booked?
-
There is a new snowdrop day to add to the many that happen during February. It has only been confirmed yesterday. I'll tell you more later when their web site shows it. It's in the Midlands
-
booking forms for the Gala 2008 are now out!!
-
Oh,
good grief...... I mean, oh, super!
-
:P
-
booking forms for the Gala 2008 are now out!!
I have to be in Germany for a book launch that weekend so can't make it - again!! :-[ and Joe Sharman wanted me to do a talk about snowdrop hybridising at the gala, but I had to let him down. Maybe next year.
-
Martin you will have to set free time now for next year
-
The dates for the Altamont, Ireland, snowdrop day shown in the IGPS magazine are wrong. Well, the dates are OK but they're in Feb not April
-
I must have been asleep, Mark.
Worse still, there is serious doubt that I shall be able to travel north for your event. I was really looking forward to it.
Paddy
-
Paddy are you the guilty party?
Are you sure you cant pull a sicky on that day?
-
Yes, Mark, I am the guilty one. I took the details over the telephone from Paul Cutler and obviously typed them incorrectly.
Regarding the Northern Event, it really couldn't have fallen more conveniently as I have the Thursday and Friday off before it and so it would have been great. However, Mary has gone off the idea of travelling and despite offers of dinner at Paul Rankin's restaurant she remains firm. Without her I will not be travelling. Very disappointed as I had looked forward to having a little time with Bob and, of course, visiting your garden. I have been to the other three on a few occasions but I would have liked to see your snowdrops. Pity!
Paddy
-
You wont see much in mine because they will be over
You could fly to Belfast International
-
Mark,
I'm sure you will have an excellent display and I'm very disappointed I won't get up to see them. Another time, I hope.
Paddy
-
Mark
Any chance of a recap of the Galanthus Events 2008. Your original post was in July of 2007 when some of the details were provisional. Plus there seem to be other events (something in Essex?) that have only been mentioned in passing.
-
The dates for the Altamont, Ireland, snowdrop day shown in the IGPS magazine are wrong. Well, the dates are OK but they're in Feb not April
Keeping us on our toes Paddy ;)
BTW, what's that lovely snowdrop on the front cover? I'd like to get hold of one with solid green inner segments that's easy to grow & preferably not too esoteric. Any suggestions?
-
Yes check your local garden centre for pots of elwesii
-
For example, from my local garden centre last Saturday, the flower stalk is about 8 inches tall, making this my tallest snowdrop.
-
I think it is great fun to watch what I would call the "Real gardeners" at the garden centres.... they are the ones looking into the faces of all the Helleborus and checking over the snowdrops with fine attention to detail to see if a minute differnece can be spotted! Of course, that is exactly what I do, too... we've found all sorts of pretty things in this way.... one of the few things that we can really get pleasure from in the big garden centres with their homogenised stock of "production line" varieties and dyed heathers!!
-
Lesley,
You will have to read the inside of the front cover to find an account of this snowdrop. It is G. 'Drummond Giant', originated in Co. Carlow.
Unfortunately, I have only a black and white photograph to hand at this moment; colour photograph on external hard drive and I am making the dinner so haven't time to get it out.
Paddy
-
I understand the logic of the sellers of dyed heathers.... they can get vast quantities of fairly large but very boring run of the mill heathers that the customers are not interested in BUT they have discovered that people are daft enough to pay good money for them if they are sprayed/dipped in bright colours.... so they spend a little money on paint and make loads... the perfect logic of the businessman ::)

Sorry to ask again but this thread seems to have lost track of its intended topic. Somebody was kind enough to tell me that the "Essex event" might be a visit to Glen Chantry organised under the auspices of the Alpine Garden Society - but I don't know the date.
Joe Sharman's "Galanthus Gala" is in Shaftesbury in Dorset on Saturday 16th February. There may be places still available but I have been unable to contact Joe since Xmas.
Talks are:
"Snowdrops at Kilverstone" by Dr Kit Grey-Wilson
"Simon's Selections" by Simon Savage
"Slovenian Snowdrops" by Michael Dreisvogt
There is a plant sale following the talks and an afternoon visit to Angela Whitfield's garden at Snape Cottage.
The RHS has a London Show on 12th & 13th February which usually features snowdrops quite heavily. These shows are held at the Royal Horticultural Halls, Greycoat Street, London SW1.
Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire runs guided tours of the Winter Walk and Snowdrop Collection. The latter is not otherwise open to the public. Tours take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and start at 2:00 p.m. Admission is by (free) ticket but you have to pay to enter the garden (if you are not a National Trust member). The tickets are issued on a first-come-first-served basis on the day (so if you arrive towards 2:00 p.m. you will usually be too late to get a ticket).
Mark has an event but I don't know the date or venue
The Cottage Garden Society has a Snowdrop Group which usually holds an event in February, but I don't know the date or venue.
The first post on this topic lists two other events.
-

Thanks Paddy; unfortunately my copy wasn't to hand when posting. Yes I must look out for that one.
Potted flowering elwesii may be a UK phenomenon because run-of-the-mill garden centres here don't seem to do them :(

Don't forget that in tandem with the Scottish Snowdrop Walk there is the Early Bulb Display in Dunblane on Saturday 16th February which has a huge selection of snowdrops both on display and for sale, usually including 'Sophie North' and 'Little Ben'.
-
Alan the Glen Chantry visit is the 6th of February, I would be amazed if there are any tickets left, but it would be worth a try.

I tried and succeeded! So there are tickets left, if anyone else is interested.
-
Well done Alan, see you there. ;)
-
Alan,
Do you have a contact number for Glen Chantry?
-
Alan,
Do you have a contact number for Glen Chantry?
I have sent you the contact number for tickets by private message as I am wary about posting such information online.

Thanks Alan.

Our snowdrop day is February 16th starting with the gardens of June Dougherty and Bob Gordon. June has a huge carpet of G. nivalis covering most of the property and masses of C. tomassinianus. Lunch comes next £14 at a local hotel. The third garden is Margaret Glynn's almost just across the road. There will be a plant sale there with crazily priced snowdrops (will she ever learn!) and Hellebores. Last garden is mine
-
The Cottage Garden Society has a Snowdrop Group which usually holds an event in February, but I don't know the date or venue.
The CGS Snowdrop Group Members Day is on Thursday 21st February 2008, at Worthing, West Sussex - speakers are Phil Cornish ('Snowdrop Discoveries') & Colin Mason ('The snowdrops he has introduced') & the day starts with a plant sale. After lunch there is a visit to the late Sir Frederick Stern's famous garden at 'Highdown'.
-
Michael Baron, National Collection Holder for Galanthus (& Daphne), has 3 Open Days in February viz
Snowdrop Day Wednesday 6th 11am - 4pm (teas)
National Gardens Scheme Saturday 9th 11am - 4pm (teas)
Snowdrop day Sunday 10th 11am - 4pm (teas)
Admission Charge £3
For full details see his website at http://www.brandymount.co.uk/
-
Useful information on these events, Chris, many thanks. :)
-
Hi All,
I have been lucky enough to get two tickets for the Glen Chantry open day next Wednesday. I know that Brian Ellis, David Quinton and Alan_B are going to be there too. :)
Just wondering if there are any other SRGC'ers going along? (Now could be the perfect opportunity for anyone reading this great website, who has never yet posted, to come out and say hi!).
If you don't post a hi online, please do say hi on the day! ;D
regards
John
-
Their collection is supposed to be unbelievable. They have lots of good snowies for sale
-
I am looking forward to seeing the placement of the snowdrops with other plants as their Summer/Autumn garden is beautiful. Sue has an eye for the right things together I think.
Best of all Wol believes in selling snowdrops for reasonable prices.
-

And I believe in buying them at reasonable prices too! ;D
Seriously, I am really looking forward to seeing their collection. I just hope that the weather doesn't spoil the day.

Yesterday I went to one of the snowdrop days (or 'Winter Opening' days) at the Chelsea Physic Garden (mentioned by 'Kent Gardener' on another thread). The garden is open 10:00-16:00 on 2/3 and 9/10 February http://www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk/ . In the centre of the garden they have a 'snowdrop theatre' in which snowdrops on pots are displayed and a smallish variety of snowdrops and snowflakes around the garden. The best thing for this snowdrop aficionado was the range of plants availble on the sales table. I bought 'Trym' for the princely sum of £20, the most I have ever paid for a snowdrop but one that I have been looking to buy and failing to find for several years. Also 'Hill Poe' for £8 because I remember Paddy recommending it on this forum .
The Chelsea Physic Garden is an incredible oasis of calm in the hurly burly of London (although it was getting quite busy by the time I left). It also enjoys a benign micro-climate that enables them to grow some very tender plants.
-
Alan,
I am so chuffed that my recommendation was taken to heart and I feel perfectly confident that you will not be disappointed. G. 'Hill Poe' is a low-growing snowdrop and a little thought regarding where you are going to place it in the garden will be rewarded. As with yourself, I have enjoyed the Chelsea Physic Gardens, such a contrast to the area in which it is situated. The year before last we went to the Chelsea Flower Show, visited the Chelsea Physic Gardens while there and stayed at the hotel at the Chelsea Football grounds; actually felt quite blue after all that. Remember 'Chopper' Harris anyone? Great favourite of mine.
Those of you heading off to Glen Chantry on Wednesday - I do hope you enjoy it. Wol showed great photographs when in Cork last Thursday night and I cannot imagine you would not find the garden a great place to visit. I'm looking forward to your photographs as you will show the garden from another person's viewpoint. Don't overdo the snowdrops now!
Paddy

Remember him well Paddy. Couldn't pass to save his life but boy could he defend.

Friday! What use is that! >:(
Now Anthony, had you been teaching in Further Education you would have known that Friday is the day when General Studies is time tabled and this means that the General Studies Department works as normal and everyone else has the day off! ;D
-
I agree Anthony. Why do these events happen on stoopid days? Especially those during the week. I bet most are aimed at the retired enthusiast and not the up and coming grrrr
-
I am inclined to the opinion that with folks paying over £150 for one snowdrop, then there is not likely to be a problem with those folk not being able to afford a day off work... supposing they do work....for one of these events. :P By the time you've bought your 'drops and paid for the tickets, you could have had a decent weekend somwhere where they make chocolate 8)

Probably for the same reason that fishing was banned on a Sunday (before some nice person invented that Western peculiarity "The Weekend"): to keep the riffraff away. :P
-
Paddy, Mark (anyone?)
Did you go to Altamont last weekend & how was it?
-
When you're there Mark, avoid the Suffolk Punch. I hear it has quite a kick. :)
-
Ashley,
I'm going tomorrow, Friday.
Paddy
-
Ah - this weekend. Enjoy it Paddy, and take the camera please!
-
Yesterday, despite the fog, we went to see a friend's collection. We had a very enjoyable day culminating with a walk by the source of the river Glaven where her sister-in-law has been planting huge drifts of nivalis, they made a lovely walk and hopefully when they open on Sunday for St John's Ambulance they will make a good amount for them. I was also given this rather nice viridice found in a churchyard some years ago, they called it v. All Saints, I particularly like the way that the spathe curls over.
-
Rather like a Bishop's crosier? Is it a constant feature?
-
Anthony I am told it is, and as it has been some time since it was first found I have no reason to doubt it.
-
I'm going to Altamont tomorrow also

News of Galanthus events is what this thread is about so I think you should post the link. As this is an English (or is it a Scottish?) language forum, it might be helpful to provide an English translation if possible.
-
I am very sorry but it is only in German: http://www.oirlicher-blumengarten.de/ (http://www.oirlicher-blumengarten.de/)
You have to click on the red writing to get more information about it. If you need help for translation I will help you.

Lesley,
Yes, I'll take the camera and hopefully take a few photographs worth posting to the forum. I've been there the past few years and have enjoyed it very much. You must make the effort to visit.
Mark,
I shall probably see you there then tomorrow.

I am planning to go to the Nettetal Event. It is just across the border from the netherlands. Hope to satisfy the white fever there!

Hi all ,
Renate and some other members will go to Nettetal - so I'm sure we will see pics .
For me is it too far away :'(

Lots of pictures please (and not just close ups of snowdrops) - it would be great to get a feel for the event through pictures, so that I can make a decision for attending in the future. I am not great in crowded places, so have a strong feeling the Gala will never be for me.
Have fun (and try not to make yourself bankrupt!)
Jx
-
It seems, Oirlich will be a small Forum meeting. I will go to the Galanthus Gala too although
not infected with strange white feaver.
But there are lots of other spring flowering plants too. My only problem will be, how to identify the others from this Forum, especially Sophie Fish :)! Maybe TH is of some help.
Gerd

I think we should choose a time and a place for our meeting. Maybe at 12 o'clock next to the entrance?

i will be wearing my rainbow woollen hat ,with a nice snowdrop oatten sown onto it ,maybe i will take a picture and put it on the manmade snowdrop thread.

Hi Hans
What (or who) is CEMIK please?
thank you
John
-
John :
Knoche ( Bone ) is in turk language : Cemik ;D
-
I think that Sophie Fish ( though Emma is a very nice name, we are getting used to Sophie Fish!!) is going to the gala in England whereas Gerd and Arne (and Thomas?) are going to the German Gala......??? ::)
So sad if this wonderful meeting is not complete!
-
John,
Where does your friend live? In Papua New Guinea?
If not, please send a pic and I'll do the same, really ;D.
Gerd

next time I see him I shall ask him to remove the steel ring from his nose and put his steel bone in so that I can get a photo.

Gerd + John :
I hope your friend eat : desheusar ;D ;D ;D
my taste is : pollo deshuesado a la plancha !
-
Is it that the bone must be taken out to eat... boneless ?? desheusar is new for me....
Hans like to eat grilled boneless chicken?
-
Yes Maggi ,
In Mallora we have eaten : Paella for blind people -this means : without bones ,mules without a shell ....
Pollo deshuesado a la plancha :
this is a special meal in northern Argentina ( maybe also in other countries )
my wife has learned it there and I prefer it really ....sorry but I have not a pic - you have come to Mahlberg in summer for barbeque so you can taste it .....
-
I bet the rainbow woollen hat's not as good as mine? ::)
-
Hans, I thought they only eat beef and sheep in Argentina ? :o
Anthony, i thought that was just your head...... :-[
-
Maggi ,
they eat sheep only in the south ( Patagonia ) - in the north we eat Bife de Lomo, Pollo ,Truite ,Cabrito....
-
I have never yet eaten goat of any kind......... perhaps at your barbecue....? ::) :-\ :-X
-
Maggi :
goat has to many bones - I'm shure we find better things for barbeque ;)

Gerd, you will find me easy! I used to have a beard but not any more now! :D :D :D :D
And I will not be there for snowdrops. There will be very good other things.
Lucky enough it is just over the border with Holland, only 3 hours driving, I hope... ::) ::)

Altamont was very, very cold today not many photos taken except for people shots and a couple of Galanthus

Maggi :

Goat has the same number of bones as sheep, except in Jamaican cuisine. :D I've eaten goat in Jamaica, Crete and Mexico.
Anthony, i thought that was just your head...... :-[
If it's cold tomorrow I'll wear my hat Maggi. ::)

In my childhood, goat was a regular meal.

I'm stoopid
Here are two forum regulars and Bob Gordon who's garden is open with mine and two others tomorrow.

I never knew I was soooooo grey - where's the Grecian 2000
-
Have just had an email from a friend. He went to a small garden this week that was open for the Red Cross charity. It was advertised in a local shop window as 'come and see the snowdrops in Judy's garden' (before you ask, it was not Janet of Judys Snowdrops!).
It sounds like it was a very small affair with lots of tea & homemade cake and discussion of snowdrop flowers. The flowers had been picked and were in vases in the house (Judy was in her mid seventies and it was a cold day - she was very knowledgeable on the subject). This 'vase' set up made it very easy for all visitors to get involved in the discussions and enjoy the scent without having to get sore knees and backs.
There were also galanthus bulbs for sale - 3 in a bag - £1.50 per bag! My friend came away with 'Lady Elphinstone', 'Tiny' and 'Comet' - a bargain at 50 pence each bulb!

No need Mark. Just borrow your friends hat.....

wow! Did you do that yourself? Maybe I should take it to the bone! The flash obviously hit every white hair and lit it like a beacon

Maybe I should take it to the bone!
Careful you'll have one through the nose next ;D ;D

Hey John,
there is a new german menber of the forum without an idea of english. We gave him a instruction for use the forum and pics etc. It`s difficult to translate an instruction. So we gave it in our first language. He won`t (because he cannot) speak with us, but he has a lot of good pics.
-
Hagan,
thank you for explaining. Now I understand, and I am looking forward to pictures from a new member.
Brian,
Sometimes I have time to translate things via online software - today there were so many posts that were not in English I didn't have the time to - and got a bit fed up.
best wishes
John

I`m waiting too. John.
The new member organises the OIRLICHER snowdropdays.

Our snowdrop day is now over until February 2010. Very cold this morning and sunshine by the afternoon. My garden was last with people arriving from 3pm. Warm enough for snowdrops and crocus to open. 90 people were in and around the garden today. I'm sure the neighbours will have thought I had died. 101 question s today covering everything in the garden. Top questions were
Q What's the bush with the white flowers? A Lonicera purpusii
Q What's the bush with the scented pink flowers? A Daphne Jacqueline Postill
Q What's the crocus with the purple stripe? A Colchicum kessellringii

A date for your diaries and no excuses for forum members not attending
Scottish Snowdrop Conference on Friday 20th Feb 2009 at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh

After good rain this last week, the very first of my autumn snowdrops are showing though today, Gal. niv. reginae-olgae. Lovely to see them again.
-
Hi Lesley
that is great to hear. My spring snowdrops are going past their best so it is good to have yours to look forward to.
regards
John

Hello Lesley, I wondered where you were on our thread I expect you have been lurking! Good to have some more to look forward too, as John says, ours are past their best...although I think my South Hayes is going to decide to open any day now (at long last - I may need to re-site it).
-
Yes Brian, I've been lurking, about once a week on the Galanthus threads and in all honesty, all I can say is - a snowdrop is a snowdrop is a snowdrop.
-
Now.now Leslie, don't tease ;)
