Have fun at Christmas
Thank you to the forum members you are fun.

This is my snow/Christmas photo.
I lived and worked in Orkney.

There is snow on the ground.
It was Christmas day 2003.
The Baa is a mad ball game they play . You can figure where the ball is from the steam.

Thanks for the laugh.

A friend of mine has a christmas cake story.

Visitors called in for a cuppa with Gloria who is a good sort.
She was distracted because she was trying to assess the optimal time to get her legendary cake out of the oven.
She was also keeping an eye on Billy, her daughters big black Labrador dog for the day.

She managed to be hospitable and still get the cake out -perfect as usual. All the most expensive ingredients mind you.

The visitors stayed and stayed talking and playing with Billy while Gloria mentally clocked up all the other christmas preparations she had meant to get done.

She was relieved to farewell the visitors but even seeing them to the gate took ages. She said she was guiltily thinking how she would rather just get on with her day.

Back into the kitchen to deal to the cake. Not any sign of it at all.
Was she dreaming? She even checked in the oven twice. Maybe she hadn't taken it out after all.

Billy sh@ raisins for a week.

Trond yes you are correct I have had this for some years and have grown this in what I call my scree where it is a little large but gets the right amount of drainage. I am reluctant to say how hardy it is given that we are currently in the middle of the coldest spell here for some years but it has been an OK doer so far. The blue flowers which make it so attractive are short lived though :(

I thought I might miss sending a greeting as we've had very bad gales here recently with no power or water until 5pm Saturday and my internet connection just back a few minutes ago.

It seems that a white Christmas in the north is a mixed blessing, so I thought this little image of a New Zealand Christmas tree, one of the Metrosideros species, may cheer the spirit at this busy time. I wish all Forumists a very merry Christmas and a wonderful New year with lots of flowers, good things to eat and most of all, good friends and family to share them with.

nice images and sentiments, all :)
i've decided hoar frost is about my favourite part of winter :) (all the other parts involve being warm--big warm cozy clothes, hot beverages, warm blankets....)

good to see some cheering views from down south--i've always questioned the sanity of those who long for a white christmas--were i in hawaii or anywhere else warm and green, my only thoughts regarding snow would be to give thanks continually that there was none!

Seasons greetings to one (Maggie) and all!

1. The Xmas tree has been brought up from the cellar currently just above zero for a few days sojourn in the tropics (=living room). It is of course edible, a Monkey Puzzle, but it will be many years before I can offer monkey puzzle nuts for Xmas!

2. It will once again be a colourful Xmas dinner (with blue potatoes too), all from the Andes Mountains
Lime green and yellow: Ullucus tuberosus (Ulluco)
Red/pink: Oxalis tuberosa (Oca)
Long and white: Tropaeolum tuberosum (Mashua)
Please pop in if you're in the area...

Interesting, Stephen,  your veg collection reminds me of the marked outside Quito, Ecuador. There you could get all kinds of tubers. I got a taste when we were invited to dinner at a local Andean family.
Monkey Puzzle trees regularly set nuts here. Yours look more like a Cunninghamia!

The green Ullucos were actually bought on a market in Bolivia by a guy in Trondheim. He gave them to me on a garden visit telling me that they were a kind of potato, grown in Bolivia as a delicacy. I didn't eat them the first two seasons, suspicious of the edibility of a green primitive potato which I thought they were. I finally found out they were Ulluco in the Basellaceae (related to Basella alba, Ceylon Spinach) - I immediately saw the familiarity of the leaves when I was told...

Re- Monkey Puzzle: Well spotted! It's not actually real Monkey Puzzle, but Araucaria angustifolia from Brazil; I was sent the seed by a guy in Sao Paolo some years ago....

I don't play, Alan.... keep getting my fingers caught inthe strings..... but Ian sold a Tanglewood to buy a Takamine..... we are both fond of all musical intruments and are mildly geeky about guitars and banjoes!

Brian and Diane, both youtubes were such fun.  I used to watch the Two Ronnie's here in the USA, good to see at least one Ronnie here.

An annual tradition in our household is to watch the various versions of A Christmas Carol to reaffirm our opinions on which we like the best, for me, it is always Black Adder's Christmas Carol  (it gets bonus point with Robbie Coltraine as the Christmas spirit)

mid christmas eve here (6:56 pm) i often prefer to cook on the eve, and relax on the day (in city dwelling days, it was often a movie day), but since we had to go to work to pick up paycheques (20 miles one way) then for a bit of shopping (60miles the other, then 40 miles back home) i think i will reverse that order, and be lazy tonight  ;D

hope the weekend is good to you all, whether festive or restful!

Otto - We'd be mightily pleased if you knocked on our door at anytime of the year, we'd even cook you a Christmas dinner.  If we make you a wreath for the occasion there could be a shortage of berries!

We just might have a major nor'easter on Monday with snow. Perhaps the Greenland high is at last fading and Europe will finally warm up.  It's certainly our turn at winter.

johnw - a brief flurry this evening. +2c

It is good to see Rafa and Delphine enjoying the summer sun with Bony..... Rafa, it is the hardest thing any owner can do to  have to take the decision to end the life of a faithful friend.... but it is the greatest service we can do to save our beloved companion animals from suffering.  Bony had a wonderful life with you, and a long one and she is gone now, with love, as she lived with love.
That is the best thing one could say of any friend, whether they have two legs or four.
Take strength and comfort in the knowledge you were a good friend to your fine canine friend - and remember all the days in the sun.

Dear Rafa, I'm so so sorry you've had to have Bony put to sleep. It is a terrible decision to have to make and is only for the dog's benefit in the long run, no matter how it hurts the owner. Dogs invade our lives with their love and loyalty as much as our children do and I can only imagine their passing as like when a parent must ask doctors to cut off life support for a beloved child. We are all thiking of you and wish you well for the coming weeks.

Rafa,

I think I'll be in your position sometime within the next 6 months, although my little white mop (see my avatar picture) is somewhat smaller than your massive bundle of energy!  ;D  Our little Elf is now 15 1/2 years old, so she's had a good life.  I didn't expect her to make it through last winter, so my 6 months may be somewhat out as well.  A couple of years ago we had to end our 14 1/2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but quality of life is definitely preferable to quantity of life. :'(

All the best to you and Delphine.  I hope 2011 is more positive!
