Galanthus elwesii monostictus in sunshine. ;)
-
It is NADELSTREIFENSPITZEN.
Hagen, NADELSTREIFENSPITZEN is not bad looking too and even with some better green than the Dutch one.
-
Galanthus elwesii monostictus in sunshine. ;)
or is it elwesii elwesii?
-
Hans, your "grünröckiges" (all green inner tepales) Gem is very impressive.
Mark, I never heard about a Gee in this early flowering period.
Chris, I will send you a PM.
John, NADELSTREIFENSPITZEN has a normal but very big apicalmark, because it is a Gem.
Maggi, thank you for the translation of NADELSTREIFENSPITZEN.
Luit, may be its more green because it got fewer light? ;)
-

Hans, you show and describe a new one for us - "sunshine". We haven't seen that for a long time.
Good snowdrop.

-
Very nice one Hagen and so early! This must be in a greenhouse or something like it.
Luit i wish i had time to visit Lisse on mondays but its too busy at the moment in the Lillies. About 90 million to wash and pack this season!
-
My snowdrops are buried under the snow :( probably a good thing with temperatures dropping to - 13 last night here in Dorset :o
-
My snowdrops are buried under the snow
Yep, mine too Emma and I am giving the chips an extra fleece blanket today. :-\
-

That is cold, Emma.... would that be a record cold temp. for your area?
I know that we have Forumists who have already been stuck below minus 20 or 30 for weeks, but for the UK this weather is not the norm and so we're taking it badly! :-X
-
It is the lowest recorded temperature for November that i know of, dont know about the country as a whole. It got down to - 17 last January :o I live and work in a frost pocket :'( >:(
-
plus we have freezing fog this morning !!!!
-
plus we have freezing fog this morning !!!!
Oh joy! It's gets worse, doesn't it? :-X
-
A slow thaw on the Bucks/Beds border this morning, +4. The cold seems to incentivise the bulbs to come through.
-
Thanks for all the comments! yes, that one is a Galanthus elwesii monostictus.
Mark, I never heard about a Gee in this early flowering period.
This is also what I have heard - but today I had a further look on a snowdrop because I saw three very bluish leaves, checking the flower I would think it is a very early Galanthus elwesii elwesii, at least this year. ::)
-
With temperatures above freezing for the first time in a while I checked on my snowdrops and noted that its a real time of transition. The majority of Galanthus reginae-olgae and all of Galanthus peshmenii have finished flowering. I brought the plants shown below into the house to photograph and was immediatly struck by how quickly you could smell the perfume from the flowers.
G.r-o Stefan is a John Fielding selection, note the 'crinkled' end on the pedicle which is always evident on this selection.
G.r-o Leyla is one that I have selected because it is always at its best now right at the end of my plants flowering season.
One of the last few flowers still on G.r-o Fotini.
Promise of things to come with the only G.r-o ssp vernalis that I have selected as worth naming, Katsoris.
-
Some decent sunshine in the middle of the day provided enough warmth for a roll-call; a fraction under half my varieties are showing noses or better, which still leaves a higher than usual number still to show. The long cold spell is surely the cause. The ones that are well up are in no hurry to push up flower scapes. The lack of enthusiasm is mirrored by my alpine house narcissi, which seem to be in suspended animation. Its good to have some Galanthus activity on Ebay.
-
A few early ones from Nova Scotia.
1. Galanthus reginae-olgae subsp. vernalis 'Alex Duguid'; as you might guess Mr. Ellis already has this one in flower!
2./3. Galanthus plicatus 'Three Ships' (John Morley find, Henham Park, Suffolk 1984)
4. Galanthus 'Richard Ayres' - in bud
Another huge Monday storm on the way with vast amounts of rain and wind and up to 11c.

Oh my, that Fotini! :o :o :o :o

John in your excitement you have posted 3 Three Ships

John in your excitement you have posted 3 Three Ships
Mark - All are in the correct order now. You would catch that and so did Brian!
I also see from my shot that Richard Ayres at long last seems to be offseting reasonably.
johnw - 75-100mm tomorrow! Must be sure to get the plants on the ark this time.
-
Two more snowdrops photographed today before the next forecast snow arrives.
Galanthus elwesii Peter Gatehouse.
Galanthus elwesii Earliest a gift from Ruby Baker that originally came from Richard Nutt.

Just noticed the silly season has arrived. Galanthus Madelaine on ebay stands at £103.10 ::)

It's tempting - but it's not really me. I prefer to give them away or swap them. :)
-
WOW Glad you dont want Madaline back John .
-
luckily there are normal people who just love bulbs
Roland
-
Roland i agree, been given a plant is a wonderful thing because attached with the gift is the person and fond memories and when you show off your plant to anybody else you always mention the chap or lady from were it came(well i do)but when its bought its just a value you can talk about which i find embarrassing not because I'm ashamed of what i have payed for some things but because i really dont like discussing money. John i was only joking mate.
-
I think swapping is much more fun :) Saying that i do like the mad rush round the sales hall at the Gala, i tend to get very shaky with excitment ::) :o
-
I have never used ebay so having looked at the (idiotic, looks just like a yellow snowdrop) bids on 'Madeline' why has l**k bid nine times from £30.10 to £71.10 when there were no other bids and then after o**n bid put in another five from £101.10 to £136.10.
Seems much easier to make friends and swap.
-

I think the way it works is that someone puts in a maximum amount they're prepared to bid up to, and the site then automatically bids for them, so if you outbid them you get a message saying you've been automatically outbid and you have to keep putting in higher and higher bids until you finally outbid the first person's maximum biddable limit. That first person's automatic re-bids don't appear.
-

Quite so Martin
l**k had put in a high bid and every time someone else put in a bid it was ignored and his bid noted, o**n then obviously put in a higher bid which l**k then trumped with a bid of over £136.
As you say Tony, much better to make friends on this forum, who I have to say are most generous :D

Time to lift mine ;D

I don't have 'Madelaine' so can't say for sure but from what I've read and pics I've seen, it's pretty much a less impressive version of the much less expensive and more easily obtainable 'Wendy's Gold'. So why?????
-
Thanks for that explanation, seems a bit devious to me and I would like to see the other bids to at least think they were genuine.
-
Tony, I think the whole bidding system is designed to encourage high bids (naturally I suppose) and there are various aspects that I don't personally like at all.

Nothing like Wendy's Gold, Martin. Wendy's is a sturdy plant with chunky leaves and quite an intense deep yellow. Madelaine is more delicate both in leaf and flower, leaves paler towards lime-green and the flower with longer outers, and most distinctive, a lime-green ovary and inner marks. A beautiful snowdrop.
This Ebay auction price is a good deal higher than the two Madelaine drops auctioned a year ago for an average price of £53. Doubtless the reason is the old familiar one of two enthusiasts both wanting the plant badly on one of the rare occasions it becomes available, and so the red mist descends. Been there myself. Enjoyed it!
I think this pic is mine but cannot be sure since it predates my newer labelling system. If perchance it belongs to someone else, apologies and thanks.
-
Okay, well maybe 'Madelaine' looks better in the flesh, but I have to say if I found something like that amongst my seedlings I wouldn't be falling over myself to name it. Maybe as a breeder making selections from a lot of seedlings I tend to be quite critical, and if I was looking for more yellows to name I'd tend to be looking for brighter, stronger, bigger, very garden-worthy yellows rather than smaller and greener yellows. But I guess that's just indicative of me being less a collector and more of a breeder these days.
-
I suppose you could call me an overly-critical little breeder ;D
-
My guess in Madelaine, Greenfield/s and Greenteeth would be very much cheaper at the Gala. The big question has to be why bid so high for Greenfield/s
-

Indeed. Ruth Birchall gave me it and so it's a reminder of her for me, and it's a nice enough little snowdrop, but no crowd-stopper.
-
People, we went through all this "why why why" stuff last year.... surely it is clear that some people have a lot of disposable income and are prepared to spend it on snowdrops on Ebay..... let's not take up more forum space with this discussion... I am sure there is little new to say on the matter.
-
very true Maggi

You are right Maggi
My last Galanthus peschmenii finished today

Anyone see what 'Madelaine' sold for in the end? I have an article on snowdrops to write for the Daily Mail Weekend Magazine and might use it as recent ebay snowdrop fever tale.

Ecusson d'or is now up for sale on Ebay £33.77 at the moment with two days left to go.

Let us know when it's going to appear Martin. Not that I could force myself to buy the Daily Mail though! :P

A nearby small supermarket has the newspapers near the checkouts...... an average queue should be long enough to find article and read it.... free!! ;D :-X ;)

May have a spare Madelaine to swap this year,......................................much better way than the bay

I have a few babies from Galanthus reginae olgae collected in Sicily

My only autumn/winter flowering Galanthus is going to be very late this year. It usually starts flowering fairly early in November and goes on till February. This year the buds were just showing colour when they got covered in snow on November 25th. They reappeared somewhat flattened yesterday and are now covered in snow again.
-
Roland, thanks for the Madelaine winning bid link.
-
Roma I like the comparison of your last two photos
-
By the sounds of the weather report, you might be able to manage something similar, eh Mark?
-
Anyone remember exactly what that record price on ebay was a few years ago for a bulb of Ecusson d'Or ? I know it was over £200 and I'm thinking £240ish but can't recall exactly and can't find it in a search. I think that was the highest price on ebay for a snowdrop. The exact price or a close approximation would be useful for an article I'm working on.
-
Strange that a search isn't showing it, Martin...... from January 2008
http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1246.msg29781#msg29781
It finally went for £131.98!
Wondering if one went for more in 2009 0r 2010?
There is this thread about 2010 prices....http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=4793.0
-
Thanks Maggi. Not sure why but my searches never seem to work well. Maybe I'm not using the search facility properly. But I'm sure there was one that went for a lot more than that.
-
Martin, depending on which site you look on it either went for £226 or £266.
-
Sorry got mixed up. It was flocon de neige that sold for over £200.
-
Alan my snowdrops are stuck. Those that are above ground have just stayed there. Three weeks frozen, a week defrosted and now covered in snow
-

Ah! That's was I was thinking of. I got mixed up too. Memory is going!
-
I think the highest paid for Ecusson d'or was from memory £236.
-
I think I'll just go with well in excess of £200.

Emma / Martin - I think Emma is dead on, the figure of £236 is exactly what I recall.
1 hour and forty minutes to go about 12km this afternoon. The first skid of snow and the cars were making ice as they travelled through it, many rear end collisions, jack-knifed 18 wheelers and pile-ups. 100kms took 2hr 50 minutes. Hoy, did you take back your gift? ;)

I was in a creative mood this morning and welded this snowdrop in 15 minutes, together with some ledlights its priceless!

Early last year I sowed seed of Ipheion 'Alberto Castillo', two seeds came up and I grew them under 24 hour fluorescent light in a very cool basement circa 5-8c. By September they died down but rapidly re-appeared and are now with 10 x 5" leaves each and very stout. Last week to my surprise another seed sprouted. Given the good growth I have been contemplating trying the same with some G. reginae-olgae and G. peshmenii seedlings (from kind forumists' seed) that sprouted a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone tried this and should I risk disrupting their natural pattern? Ipheions really don't seem to have much of a dormancy issue.
johnw - very strange bursts of rain this evening. +8c. Snow mostly gone but outer suburbs about 7cm.

First leaves up in my pots of 2010 snowdrop chips. Over 100 pots X an average of say 20 chips per pot = where the hell am I going to grow them all? Quite a lot of leaves up in the 2010 seed pots too. Same story there. Maybe fewer pots but more seedlings to a pot, so same long-term quandary. Why do I do it?
