Title: Pleione maculata very late this year...
Post by: JPB on November 15, 2010, 10:47:42 AM
They are still in leaf and start to become a little yellow since a few days... Is anyone else observing the same?

Graham, do you grow them warm or colder?

Hi Hans,
In the Spring when I think that the frosts are gone they go outside with all my other pleione. Part of the day they get full sun but most of the day they are in partial shade.
In the Autumn, (this year about two weeks ago), I bring them into an unheated room in the house, with a West facing window. Not sure of the temperature in there but the door is open most of the day so gets some ambient temp. from the rest of the house.

I have only one Pleione maculata. It has flowered already from the beginning of October till the end for 4 weeks. Unlike other Pleione I have the autumn flowering Pleione in the windowsill in the livingroom. In summer I threat them like all other tropical orchids; fine bark (though with some extra slow nutrients) and weekly watering. During winter I store the pseudobulbs in a cold room.

I grow mine cold and there are no sign of flowers yet. It looks like all the autumn flowering pleiones are late this year. Only xl agenaria has finished flowering. One of my Pleione preacox, and Pleione Barcena has just started flowering. Wharfdale have buds and Sangay are beginning to show signs of buds forming.

I keep mine a little bit warmer than others, however they also have green leaves so far. So I expect flowering in December.

I've put them in my living room, kept them dry and occasional misting. Most have shed their leaves and the others are becoming yellow. Small (healthy!!! :)) young shoots are visible now. Happy ending!!! Next year I'll put them inside as soon as it is getting colder in September. Presumably they have become too cold and too wet this year...
Thanks for your advice!
