On Saturday, November 6th, at 10 o'Clock, our VRV organizes a meeting and lecture day at the University of Gent.
The venue :
Plantentuin Universiteit Gent
Karel Lodewijk Ledeganckstraat 35
9000 GENT
(entrance through the garden at the back - follow the signposts in the building)
There will be a plant raffle, plant sales and lots of opportunities to meet and talk to friends !
On top of that, we are proud and happy to annouce that Arthur Nicholls (Art600 on this forum) will be giving two undoubtedly excellent and most interesting talks about the flora in two countries that he has visited on several occasions :
TURKEY
and
IRAN
We will see lots of Crocus, Iris, Dyonisia's and many other gems in their natural habitat !
Entrance is free, coffee will be available but please bring your lunch.
We start at 10.00 o'Clock and finish normally at about 15.30 hrs.
We hope to welcome all alpine enthousiasts living within "hopping distance" ;D of Gent as this is an opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED
-
I'll be there for sure, Luc. I see you there. ;)
-
Four weeks to late for me :'(. Spent two days at the end of September near Ghent and Brugge.
-
Schade Uli ! :( :'( ;)
I hope you had a good time anyway ! 8)

Yesterday we enjoyed a visit to the Flemish Rockgarden Club and had a wonderful day with very good and interesting lectures by Arthur.
We were happy to see some very exquisite Iris etc. :D :D
My better half made some pictures of Arthur at work and of the Belgian forumnists.
Thanks to the VRV for the warm welcome!!
-
Very happy to hear that you had a great day Luit ! :D
From our side we were very happy that you were all there.
Indeed beautiful lectures .And Arthur and Dan are such great guys!
For me the day was to short ! All those good plantsmen ,friends,forumnists...
Many thanks to all who makes from this day a great succes.Special thanks also to Luc & Luc who made this possible.
We hope to plan something like this again in the future.
And offcourse Luit thanks for sharing this pictures.
-
Just a bit of explanation on the pics made by Luit.
Picture 1 (from left to right ) : Jozef Lemmens (former president and founder of our VRV) -Arthur - Dan - Hendrik Van Bogaert .
The Forumnists (from left to right ) :
Dan-Arthur -Danny De Raeymaeker - Kris De Raeymaeker -Wim Boens - Luc Gilgemyn - Luc Scheldeman - Luit Vandelft -Frankie Wulleman-Hendrik Van Bogaert.
What a good idea Luit to make this picture. Most of the time I only make pictures of plants and forgot the people. :-[
-
Thanks for the pictures Luit !
It was such a pleasure seeing you again and it is most encouraging to hear that you all had such a great time !
You are quite right, Arthur did a wonderful job as our lecturer and we were more than happy and proud to have him ! The day was too short and it was a shame we couldn't spend more time with so many of our visitors ! We definitely must make up for that on a future occasion !
We just waved goodbye to our friends Arthur and Dan on their way back to the channel tunnel and I thought I should mention in their names that they also had a "grand" time !
We should also keep in mind that we got to know Arthur (and so many others including you Luit ;D) through THIS wonderful Forum !! So our gratitude also goes to the SRGC !! :-* :-*
Many many thanks once again to all the attendants !!
-
It was certainly an exciting day in Ghent: a nice turnout, a great raffle, met new people and of course a wonderful story about Turkey and Iran with its interesting flora. It was a groundbreaking experience for our young association.
Thank you Arthur for your experience with us to come share. Lute also again thanks for the photos on this forum.
-
It was a pleasure to meet old friends and make new ones.
It was a daunting prospect being the first international speaker, but I was made to feel most welcome and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
My thanks to everyone involved in the planning of the event and my special thanks to Luc Gilgemyn, Luc Scheldeman and their wives who looked after Dan & I on the Sunday.
When I get approval to post on the VRV, I will post some of the images so that those who could not attend will have a chance to see some special plants.
-
Kris, it's very nice to see so many well known names from the Forum, and to be able to put faces to them but are there no women belong to VRV? ???

That's a nice idea to post some of your unique images, Arthur. Many thanks.

There are definitely some women associated with the VRV, Lesley, but it's still predominantly a male affair. Like little children with their toys. ;)
-
Lesley,
As Frankie already mentioned, we do have female VRV members, but alas none of them is active on this Forum and as the picture was of the SRGC forumists, I'm afraid the picture is an all "male" affair.... ;D

The pleasure was definitely ours Arthur ! The lectures were exquisite and to have you and Dan in our midst for a couple of days was even better. We are so glad to learn that both of you seem to have had a good time. We're surely avid to see some more pix on the Forum !! :D :D ;)

Was registered Forumist and my dear friend, Charlotte J not there, Luc?
-
Frankie, Luc,
maybe we should try to attract a bit more female members, but how do you start with that.... Or VRV forum seems to have a 12:1 ratio regarding men:women
Lesley, any suggestions? (I would ask if girls want other toys then boys but I'm afraid of what your answer to that question might be ;))
Is the New Zealand Alpine Society more balanced in ratio?

Arthur,
like Luc said,
it was a pleasure to listen to your account about your travels in Turkey And Iran. And your exquisite pictures were a real treat.

Maggi,
Charlotte is from Wallonia and I have no idea if she's a member of the VRV. Actually I have no idea if the VRV has a lot of members from across the language barrier, which is a shame , maybe we should try to attract some members from Wallonia too.

Actually, Charlotte was there Maggi, but somehow she was not around when the pictures were taken... :-\

Oh yes Maggi ,Charlotte was there but could not stay for the whole day.Luit's picture is taken in the late afternoon.
She is a regular visitor and also a very fine lady !
-
Aha! I didn't think Charlotte would miss such an event! We were sorry that she was not at this year's Discussion Weekend. Next time you see her please give her the best wishes of Ian and myself.
-
Oeps, sorry Maggi, it seems like I am not a forumist anymore. :-[
BTW, I discussed with Charlotte about attending the discussion weekend and it was only depending of saying yes. But attending the Scottish and Czech meeting in the same month was too much. Sorry, maybe next year.
-
Jef, good to see you around here again! I saw you were missing from the Forumists' photo ;D
I was just looking the other day at some of your interesting posts way back in the days of the "old" archived forum. You're welcome here any time, you know! 8)

I don't know why it is but in New Zealand (and Australia?) the balance of members is strongly the other way. In NZAGS itself, and in Otago Alpine Garden Group (Dunedin) and I think all the other similar groups there are many more women than men. Indeed, I have given many alpine talks to local and not so local gardening clubs, with EVERY seat occupied by a woman, or perhaps just one or maybe two men present. Having said that, the men who DO participate do at least their fair share, maybe more, of organizing and office bearing, and being responsible for the smooth running.
As for girls and their toys Wim, what most of us would REALLY like, is a toy boy! preferably rich. ;D

.... with one foot on the ground and the other on a bar of soap?

Hmmm,
if I have it correct the VVPV (Flemish Hardy Plant Society) has more women then men as members... so maybe the flemish women are just afraid of rocks ;D ???
So we need a rich toy boy mascotte for the VRV to attract more women...noted... ;D

Perhaps not sufficiently subtle David, but there are some great walks nearby, along cliff tops. I'd just have to remember to walk on the landward side. ;D Actually, if one foot were on the ground and the other doing work on a decent spade, I'd be happier. ::)
