64th SRGC Seed Exchange - 2010-2011
Autumn 2010 Seed Donations
Please send seed donations, individually packaged per variety, preferably in a paper
envelope, and cleaned of all seed cases, debris, insects, etc to:-
Prof. Stuart Pawley, Acres of Keillour, Methven, Perth, Scotland, UK, PH1 3RA.
Please include your name and address and a clearly written alphabetical list of the
seed you are sending. Don’t be put off if you only have a small amount of seed of
a species- it may be the small amount that no-one else has, and that someone would
love to have.
The deadline for seed to arrive at Stuart’s door is 31st October 2010, please.
If you have “late maturing” seed that cannot be sent until later, please send the information
about this as early as possible and before 31st October, to Stuart at gsp.srgc@
tesco.net. Send the list in the text of an e-mail, not as an attachment. Stuart can’t
afford a computer virus at this critical time. It is important to send the information
early so we can produce the seed list in good time. Please send late seed as soon as
you can.
Seed Lists
Overseas members and all donors will receive a seed list by post automatically. Home
non-donors should request a list from Stuart Pawley, and send a C5 (24 x 17.5 cm)
stamped addressed envelope. Last date for requesting a list will be 14th December.
The seed list will be available from around 10th November, and will go online at the
same time; you can browse and order online as well as by post. You will need a password (this has been issued in the Secretary's Pages, sent out with the recent Journal. You will also need to enter your membership number (it’s
on the envelope the The Rock Garden arrived in!)
Seed Distribution: early 2011
Seed orders must reach Alan Hayes by 15th January; we cannot guarantee to meet
orders received later. The Edinburgh Rock Garden Group begins seed distribution in
early January; we aim to have all main orders completed by January 18th.
Surplus seed distribution will not begin until all main orders are completed; not
before Jan. 18th, so members will receive their main and surplus orders a few weeks
apart. We hope to complete surplus distribution by the first weekend in February.
Queries about seed orders should be addressed to alan.hayes31@blueyonder.co.uk,
but please do not enquire about the whereabouts of orders until after 5th February.
Donors’ orders will be completed first, on the basis of their donation record; donating
more seed and for more years moves you up the list. Non-donors and surplus seed
orders will be dealt with in order of their arrival date with Alan Hayes.
Seed Exchange Notice for USA Members
US members must have a ‘Small Lots of Seeds’ permit, which is issued by APHIS. You
can find details of how to get a permit at:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/plants/plant_imports/smalllots_seed.
shtml
This must be a ‘small lots’ permit, as this does not require UK phytosanitary certification.
You must enclose a copy of the permit and conditions and a green/yellow customs label
for each order - one for a main order, and one for each surplus order of 50 packets.
If you order online, you must still post the permit documents and labels to Alan
Hayes. You can copy your permit as many times as you need. Please ensure your
permit is still valid before you send copies to us.
We must stress that “no permit, no seed” is the SRGC rule! We will do our best to get
everyone their seed, but it must be in compliance with USDA regulations.

A reminder about the forthcoming 64th Seed Exchange of the SRGC:
SRGC 64th Seed Exchange 2010-2011 season
The Seedlist for the 64th Exchange will be available on the main SRGC Website after publication of the paper list in late 2010. ( http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/seedexchange.pdf)
Autumn 2010 Seed Donation
The 2010 Seed Donation will operate in the same way as recent years:
Donating Seed
If members have seed they would like to donate, please send it, individually packaged per variety, preferably in a paper envelope, and cleaned of all seed cases, debris, insects, etc to:- Prof. Stuart Pawley, Acres of Keillour, Methven, Perth, Scotland, U.K. PH1 3RA.
Please include your name and address and a clearly written alphabetical list of the seed you are sending.
The deadline for seed to arrive at Stuart’s door is 31st October 2010, please.
If you have any "late maturing" seed that cannot be sent until after that deadline, please send the information about this seed as early as possible and at the latest: before 31st October, to Stuart at gsp.srgc@tesco.net. Please send the list in the body text of an e- mail, not as an attachment of any kind – Stuart can’t afford to acquire a computer virus at this critical time. It is important to get this information to Stuart before the deadline so we can produce the seed list in time for mailing.
Please send late seed as soon as you can after October 31st
The bonus of being a seed donor is that you get the Seed List sent to you automatically (All Overseas members will also automatically get the Seed List), you get 25 packets of seed in the main Seed Distribution (only 16 if you are a non-donor) - and the Donors are given priority in the Seed Distribution.
SRGC 64th Seed Distribution: early 2011
The SRGC 64th Seed Distribution in 2010-11 will again be completed by the Edinburgh Group of the Scottish Rock Garden Club.
Seed distribution work will begin on the first Saturday in January, and we hope to have all main orders completed by January 18th.
Surplus seed distribution will not begin until all main orders are completed; ie not before Jan. 18th, so members will receive their main and surplus orders a few weeks apart.
We hope to complete the surplus distribution by the first weekend in February.
Seed orders must reach Alan Hayes by 15th January; we cannot guarantee to meet orders received later.
Queries about seed orders should be addressed to alan.hayes31@blueyonder.co.uk, but please do not enquire about the whereabouts of orders until after 5th February.
Donors’ orders will be completed on the basis of their donation record; if you donate more seed and donate for more years, you will move up the donors’ priority list. Non-donors and surplus seed orders will be dealt with in order of their arrival date with Alan Hayes.
Seed Exchange Notice for USA Members
In 2006 the US authorities introduced new regulations regarding the import of seeds into the US, which apply to all US residents requiring seed from the Seed Exchange. To participate in the SRGC Seed Exchange, our US members must have a 'Small Lots of Seeds' permit, which is issued by APHIS. We advise that you get the permit now, rather than wait until the seed list arrives. You can find details of how to get a permit at: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/plants/plant_imports/smalllots_seed.shtml
We must emphasise that it has to be a 'small lots' permit, as this is the only permit which does not require phytosanitary certification at our end.
When you send your seed order, we need a copy of the permit, the conditions attached to it and a green and yellow customs label for that permit for each of your orders - one for a main order, and one for each order of 50 packets in the surplus.
Please read all Seed Exchange instructions before ordering. Even if you order online, you must still post the permit documents and labels to Alan Hayes. You can copy your permit as many times as you need, and we understand the permit lasts for three years, so get it now and use it till 2013.
Some Folks who have had their permits for some time will discover that these are about to expire: so check your permit NOW and renew it as neccessary!! Please ensure your permit is still valid before you send copies through to us. We must stress that "no permit, no seed" is the SRGC rule! We will do our best to get everyone their seed, but it must be in compliance with USDA regulations.
-
As well as reminding you to get your seed sent off soon to Stuart Pawley, and for the USA members to check the status of their import permits, I think it is a good idea to remind you also that in order to make a seed request online you will require the password for the 64th SRGC Seed Exchange and your SRGC Membership Number.
It may be a good idea to check NOW that you have these and file them in a safe place!
The seedlist password for the coming season was published in the Secretary's Pages which was sent with the last Journal, Number 125, dated July 2010.... it has a photo of a Cremanthodium on the cover.
This password is also published in the Seed Exchange article in that Journal, on page 10.
The password will not be able to be used until the seedlist goes live online, probably sometime in November. An announcement will be made when that is.
Members will also need their membership number, which will have been noted on the envelope the journal came in, or on their membership card, to make their seed request.
I suggest that checking these details now will save you a lot of bother when the time comes for you to make your seed requests..... and who knows, it may even take a load off my shoulders!
In which case, I thank you all most profusely, in advance!! :-* ;)
-
The Seedlist for the 64th Seed Exchange of the SRGC is now being posted out to Members and an online copy PLUS the Online Seed Ordering System will be activated early next week.
The Seed Team hasn't given us the go-ahead for the online version yet. They are getting the lists out: even as we speak I hope they are all posted, but there is a delay before putting the online version and activating the online ordering to be fair to those getting their list by post.
Overseas members using the ONLINE system WILL NOT need to send by post their written lists (for import of seeds to the likes of USA, Australia, New Zealand) ..... BUT, postal requests for seeds from those countries WILL NEED those lists to be sent in with the requests.
Another reminder to members in the USA: Please check that your "Small Lots of Seed Import Permits" are still valid. Those obtained in the early days of this scheme will now be expiring and so it would be a good idea tyo check the statuds of your permits NOW and get replacements in place in time to send as soon a possible to the Seed Team, as stated in the Seed Ex. notes. (These will be posted for information when the list goes "live".)
REMEMBER:
When the online system is operational, you will need the password for the season and your membership number. ( That is the number only, not the letter code : e.g. your membership number might be shown as REW 917682 but all you require to input to the online system is 917682.)
The password, as a security measure, has been shown in the Secretary's pages and in the last Journal #125 .... if all else fails, of course.... email me!
I will make an post here to alert you when the online system is operational.
-
Read the seed exchange notes and browse the list online now :
http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/seedexchange.pdf and click on the "2010-2011 SRGC 64th Seed List to Browse"... button.
I will post again when the online ordering system goes live.
-
The online ordering system is now live.
Last year's registrations are no longer valid, you need to start from scratch, to allow the system to check whether your membership is up to date.
This means you will need to begin by accessing the system with the password mentioned pre viously, and toyour membership number.
Later in the process you will choose your own password and then you may return to the system thereafter by logging in with your own password to do further work on your order if needed.
Please make sure that you do complete EVERY step of the process.
It is not difficult, it simply needs a little attention to detail.
Happy seed hunting, Folks!

A further reminder:
When you have entered the online system and filled in the registration "from" you will receive an email, sent to the email address you have supplied. This is to check that it is operational.
You must click on the link in that email to fully activate your seed account
Then, when returning to the Seed system you LOG IN with your membership number and the password you chose on registration.
Please make a note of your password.... it IS case sensitive so if you registered 'HOLIDAY' the system will not let you enter with 'holiday'
Please make sure that you do complete EVERY step of the process. All the instructions are in the pages as you go along.
-
If you use AOL check your spam folder for the registration email Hotmail, gmail etc are also known to cause problems from time to time.
-
Congratulations on an excellent system Fred 8)
-
Thanks Ashley.
It's essentially the same as last year with one or two small usability improvements.
-
How easy was that? Well done to Fred and all the team for making it such a user friendly (apart obviously from the dreaded AOL system) experience.
-
Members seeking extra info on plants in the Seedlist may find this link useful:
http://rockgardener.com/harkness/seedlist.cfm
This is a facility to search, online, the Seedlist Handbook.
The page reads........
"This handbook consists of a comprehensive listing of varieties of seed that have been offered by three seed exchanges (Alpine Garden Society, Scottish Rock Garden Club, and North American Rock Garden Society). Brief details of type, size, color, and origin are also included.
To access any plant listed, type genus name and click Get Genus; then scroll through the listing. For larger genera, reduce the response time by specifying a starting point in the species list; in this case retrieval is limited to 30 species. For example, campanula sarmatica produces the 30 Campanula species starting at sarmatica.
Alternatives are partial genus or family names which produce candidates.
The North American Rock Garden Society is grateful to Mabel G. Harkness and Timber Press for permission to use the second edition of the Seedlist Handbook."
-
Thanks Fred,
I ran through the online ordering smoothly. Great work!
-
Is the list of seeds actually on line yet? I registered without a hitch but...
http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/seedexchange.pdf and click on the "2010-2011 SRGC 64th Seed List to Browse"
I click on this button and it says "can’t open “2010seedlist.pdf” because the first character of its address is not valid."
The web address is 2010seedlist.pdf, no www.+whatever.

-
Think this must be a browser hitch, John, someone had it yesterday but it seemed to go away :-X
Anyway, here's a link to click on for the list to browse, print etc at will...

Great system. Worked beautifully for me !! although I did have to be SYSTEMATIC.
Great service the email confirmation of orders. In Tasmania we have to notify the local Quarantine authorities what seeds are coming in.(An extra level of bureaucracy)
The email will save substantial work for me.
-
Yes, John the email is handy for you folks.... also the system allows lists to be included easily with the seeds for those ordering online to comply with NZ and USA regulations, too.
Saves a lot of bother all round. 8)

Hi Maggie,
The list is great. I have chosen the ones I want and am trying to register but I cannot click on the email message or copy it to the web browser as suggested. The same thing happened last year. I do not know what I am doing wrong. HELP
Cynthia
-
How easy was that?
You'd be surprised how difficult it can be if you don't read the instructions first.

OK I own up, I did forget to register again first which held me up for a minute or two ;)

Cynthia
Cynthia, it may be a browser problem. I will contact you privately. :)
-
Remember Folks, the system needs to be understood by all sorts of people, many of whom have English not as their first, or even second language, so the stages are very simple, use common sense and as John says, the secret is to be SYSTEMATIC.... and 'follow the yellow brick road'! 8) 8)
-
Many thanks Maggie.
Seed ordered. It was all so easy. Congratulations on such a great system
-
One recurring difficulty seems to be members who don't know their SRGC member number. If you don't know that you really are going to struggle to just get started.
Unfortunately it is an essential security feature. Or to put it another way, if you don't know it what are the chances someone else does? ;)
-
I have been told by Ian Bainbridge that for those receiving a paper copy, their membership number is on the envelope it arrives in.
There is other correspondence etc through the year that contains it also..... ;)
-
FOLKS.... please read this... it may save you from some simple holdups in the seed system......
Some Browser systems are reluctant to open pdf files, Google Chrome seems a sticky one for that.... Firefox is easy and also Internet Explorer.
Some computers may have extra security which do not allow downloads, that can be a cause of some problems, on top of the browser thing.
You only need the numerical part of your membership number eg 91467 - some try to use REW91467.
A reminder that the password in the Journal and paper seedlist is only for initial access to REGISTER... then you need to choose your own password, which you will use to LOG IN ... AFTER you have clicked on the activation code in the email which will be sent to you automatically by the seed system.
You need to check your spam filter if you think the activation email hasn't arrived. AOL customers have most trouble with this but other email services can be similarly over zealous.
You need to read the boxes carefully and not try to REGISTER in the LOG IN box and vice versa.
All this makes it sound as if the system is terribly complicated and a trial to navigate but it really isn't.... if one takes the time to actually read the pages and follow the process it is perfectly easy to do!
For every person having problems there are dozens sailing through the seed request process.
And remember- If anyone gets it horribly wrong I will always try to dig them out of their mire.... it is usually possible!
-
Hi Maggi,
I'm getting a similar type of error which prevents me from downloading any of the previous year's seed lists and the 2010 seed list. I used your link in your last email regarding this topic and it worked although I don't know why the earlier ones don't.
I have put together a word document which contains the error messages I received. I won't include it in this message since it's almost 9Mb in size but will send it to you separately.
Rob
-
Hello Rob,
How strange that you are having this problem. we thought it must be a question of browser settings , as these things so often are. I will look out for your file arriving and discuss it with Fred. Thanks!
-
Here are links to the seedlists.... I wonder if these will open for you?
http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/2010seedlist.pdf 2010-2011 - 64th list-current list
http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/2009seedlist.pdf 2009-2010 -63rd list

-
Folks, I remind you that the deadline for seed requests is 15th January .... only a couple of days away. If you have not yet made your seed request I suggest you do so TODAY!
If you have already entered your seed request online but have not received an email confirmation of that then I suggest you log back into the seed system NOW and check .... because in that case it sounds as though you have not followed the instructions to complete all the steps in order to send your seed request through to the seed team and receive your request list email.
Even if you have nothing to pay, there are several steps needed after filling in all your numbers to complete the process. Each page of the seed system tells you whether or not there are further steps to take.... just follow the instructions.
-
Yep - seeds are being sent out now so get them ordered whilst you still can.
My seeds arrived on Tuesday - big thank you to the seed exchange team especially this year given the weather and postal chaos.
I was pleased to get most of my first choices (this was my first year as a donor).
I'd also like to say that I was delighted with the quantity in the packets.
-
The seeds I ordered arrived Thursday and am really satisfied about them.
Many thanks to all which do this good work!
-
I got my seeds on Thursday. Thanks very much to all of you who make this possible!
-
My seed arrive today, Wednesday. None of the postal problems from last season.
Thanks to all involved. Simply the worlds best seed-ex.
Jamie
PS: I would add that the seed being sent out this year and last as Iris darwasica is not this species. Both years I've received seed of what looks to be a siberica or related. I. darwasica is an aril, and this seed has none!
-
Thanks Jamie.
I'll pass the info about the Iris darwasica to the seed team .
-
My seeds arrived today. Thank you very much to all which are involved in the seed exchange!
-
My seeds arrived on Tuesday. All present and correct.
Thank you so much to all involved. Must get them planted before I travel over to the Conference.
Susan
-
Hi Susan, that's the furthest distance I've heard from so far for this year's seeds arriving. The Seed Team weill be pleased to hear that.
-
You don't get much further than here anyway I reckon! Oh, apart from Toolie of course, and Invercargill doesn't really count, being just up the road from the Antarctic and that probably doesn't have a lot of Scottish rockers.
Susan.
-
I'll be rushing home to check the mail-box tonight! But I have a suspicion that ours may've been detoured via the Inspection Service :(
cheers
fermi
-
...... from the Antarctic and that probably doesn't have a lot of Scottish rockers.
Susan.
I'd have to agree with you totally Mrs More ---it would be-far toooo cold for those of the 'kilted' brigade....
;) ;) ;D
-
My seeds arrived 19th Jan. in very good condition. Thank you very much for all seed exchange team members and seed donors ;)
-
No seeds yet :'(
-
Nicole, I checked to see if you had made your seed request online... you did not complete the process! It was important to follow the instructions on each page, telling you that even if you had nothing to pay there were still steps for you to follow to make sure your seed request was passed to the Seed Team. You did not do this!
I reminded of this need in my post Reply #30 on: January 12, 2011, 02:56:49 PM
I will pass your seed request to the seed team now, but they may not be able to fulfill all your first choices at this stage. :-X
-
No seeds yet here either ??? I'm wondering if I did some mistakes too - had some trouble logging in to the site.
-
No problem with your seed request, Trond, which has gone through correctly.
If you completed the seed request fully online you will have received an email, titled SRGC Seed Exchange Request Email
telling you it was successful and fully listing the seed ( by number and name) you requested.
If there was a payment to be made you will have had a confirmation email from the payment system about that, too.
It may be that some of you have had that email scooped by a spam filter, as you have the registration/activation emails.... it depends on the security settings of your email system.
There are warnings about that as you progress in the system, naturally.
-
OH NO !!! :-[ I'm so disappointed :'( :'( :'(
-
I had found and SRGC Seed exchange e-mail, but I see now it was just my membership confirmation in fact :-[
-
OK, thanks Maggi ;D I hadn't panicked yet but when all people seem to have gotten their allocation . . .
-
Now need to worry yet, Trond, your order went in early January.... the Seed Team has sent out around 600 plus orders so far since they began three weekends ago but there will be more than that again to process before their task is completed.
-
I promise, I'm not worried :-[ ;) I still have plenty packets from other sources to care for and the Seed Team are very busy, I know.
So in a couple of months :o (Not as tidy as someone else's I have seen (pictures of))
-
If you completed the seed request fully online you will have received an email, titled SRGC Seed Exchange Request Email
telling you it was successful and fully listing the seed ( by number and name) you requested.
oh no :o, cannot remember to have received any mail, hope it was in my spam folder. ::) :-\

Hans, you did not complete properly :'(
I have sent your request through to the Seed Team now!
-
:P - Thanks so much, Maggi. :-*
-
my seeds arrived fine last Friday !!
Thanks to everyone involved !! :-*
-
No seeds from SRGC yet. :-\
Hopefully the application went through okay (I did have help!).
I suspect the packets are being inspected by AQIS. ??? I hope I checked the names on ICON!
cheers

My seeds arrived late last week. A big thank you to everyone involved! It is like Christmas...but better. Don't tell my relatives.
Robert
-
Even though I am much closer to the Atlantic than Laurie in Alberta, or Robert in Ontario, I assume my seed has not yet arrived because I did not send in my request early. I assume that even overseas members, who are donors (who would normally get their seed in priority), are still on a "first come" (prioritized by receipt) basis???
-30C with wind chill today.
The first time since my arrival in Nova Scotia that I have felt like I was back in Ontario.
-
The Seed Team say :" Donors’ requests will be completed on the basis of their donation record; if you donate more seed and donate for more years, you will move up the donors’ priority list. Non-donors and surplus seed orders will be dealt with in the order of their arrival date with Alan Hayes."
There must perforce be an element of date-listing for donors as well, I imagine.
-
Hello, does someone has a spreadsheet file of the seed list?
thank you
-
There isn't an "official" spreadsheet file, Yann, but I hope some forumist has made one that you can get access to..... :-\
-
i've found that link http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/lister.php?all=1 but looks like nothing match the pdf list.
-
Not sure how you managed to find that link, Yann!
This is the pdf list http://www.srgc.org.uk/seed/2010seedlist.pdf
-
google is your friend ;)
-
google is your friend ;)
Yes, but in this case a very "old" friend... and outdated friend :-X
-
yes for sure, i've found a way to convert pdf to flat file. the purpose of my approach is to write a small software in which i just need to enter seed number to retrieve the whole data(genius, sowing data, germination date, etc)
-
Oh, I see, sorry I misunderstood.
-
My seeds arrived this morning. Many thanks to the team.
Interestingly, no sign of scrutiny by AQIS or Tasmanian Quarantine.
I hope there is some purpose in my notifying Tas Quarantine of my Intention to Import seeds.
Perhaps they understand I am an honest man and wouldn't be bring in anything other than what I have told them.
-
My seed arrived this afternoon, I am very happy. Thanks to all of you who have been sorting, labeling and mailing. And of course to the donors.
Marianne
-
My main seeds selection arrived this morning. Many thanks to the donators and a special award for the mammoth task done by the srgc team!
-
I've got mine too - a couple of days ago ;D Thanks to all involved in the process :) :)
-
The post , in every country, it seems, is something of a mystery! Sometimes a letter arrives almost before you've sent it, the next time it sits somewhere, or travels needlessly, to arrive weeks late. The Seed Gang were getting mail last week that was postmarked for early December!
I've got my SRGC Journal but a friend a few miles away has not..... go figure!
-
Received my seeds last week and most of what I reqested. Many thanks to all those involved for all the hard work and effort you have put into this seed exchange, regards John bartush. :) :) :)Tasmania.
-
:) :) :) :)
Ours arrived on Friday!
With 2 days at 40oC it's just a bit hot to get out there and sow them!
(In general we have to wait till the weather starts to cool down around March.)
Thanks to all the contributors and packers (thanks Ian B for your greeting!) and I promise Stuart that I'll post our donation earlier this year!!!
And thanks, Maggi, for your help in completing the seed requests, too.
cheers

Hi John, if you come up with one or better still get one from TQ I'd be keen to know ;D.
Cheers, Marcus
-
...and many thanks from this neck of the woods too. :-* :D Likewise, our summer temperatures are still far too high for general sowing, but I'm sure some seeds will enjoy a period (6 weeks or so) of low temperature in the refrigerator before getting them on their way in autumn.
-
And thanks, Maggi, for your help in completing the seed requests, too.
Thank you, fermi :-*
-
I received my surplus seed, today. Wow, very fast. And lots of goodies!
Jamie
