A page for paragons of horticulture ...
For examples of horticultural excellence from around the world.
BE ENVIOUS!

I feel a make over coming on the patio.
Paddy
-
I'm not envious because I have one that looks just like it in my yard ;D
The colors are sooOOO beautiful :o :o
Maybe rename this thread Pantheon of Horticultural Achievements.

I feel a little queasy. :-X

One very stupid trend, a paragon of horticulture, enjoys immense popularity in the USA now. I wonder what Toby will think of this one :o

Cliff, I was half kidding with the suggestion, your name is fine too. This new thread is a stroke of brilliance... love it!

Oh, you may be sure we have that trend over here in the UK, too, McMark. :-X
I expect it has also reached the Irish Republic.
What is even stanger than the craze for spirals, corckscrew bu shes, call 'em what you will, is the parallel craze for them also as FAKES - made of plastic! :o

Fake ones! That I'd have to see ;D
The random quality of the trend is comical, I see these silly corkscrewed Alberta Spruces planted everywhere, such as at my local Post Office, but of course what's the point, these things never get pruned once installed, the spiral effect gets lost... who cares, except that the plant looks browned at the edges and generally unsightly as if partially eaten by deer. ::)

Was going to make a similarly queasy remark about that first picture but thought I might be reprimanded. After all, the mountain is Sooooo realistic. 8)

I just regret they didn't add some "life" (http://media.achat-ville.com/uploads/lyon/Produit/4b/prod_photo1_12573_1237223466.jpg) in it...it would have been perfect! ;D
-
Not QUITE as 'spectacular' as the opening offer ... this joyous arrangement was captured in Cambria, California ... it even makes the ice-cream poster to the rear look drab ...
-
You're right Zephirine, there should have been a small plaster gnome, not with fishing rod, since there seems to be no pool but maybe a hunting gnome, with a gun. Better still, a revolver, pointed at his own head. :o
-
;D How lovely it would be, Lesley! ;D
Another improvement could have been to instal a few mirrors in the background of The Achievement, so that it would appear to repeat indefinitely to the eyes of the admiring passer-by.... ;D
-
Zeph, clearly you have true design inspiration....... we can only hope you have great success in this new career! ::) :-X
-
Thank you so much, Maggi, I'll think about it for the future, for sure...
Want another (free!) idea? Look at those delicate, lovely, white and purple "teeth" (molars?) around The Achievement.
To complete the masterpiece, why not add some modern sculture, featuring a giant toothpaste tube and toothbrush, tenderly intertwined, in artistically selected colors...maybe bright red and yellow would be nice, what do you think? ;D ;D ;D
Zeph
-
....and leading to sponsorship from nearby dentists! great idea!
-
The scary part is just how big that initial garden is..... when you realise the people in the background, those "molars" are something like 6 feet tall. Yikes!! :o
I actually don't the last one posted...... er, should I have admitted that out loud? ::)

But that could have lead to a whole series of suicides right down the street, as the passers by passed by. ;D
Talking of teeth, unless David Lyttle or someone local gets there before me, I'll post a picture of a Dunedin sculpture on our harbour foreshore, in a few days. I have to go to town tomorrow and hope to get my camera sorted. Or I can use Roger's.

Oh, the Portsmouth Drive guano catchers. I will leave it to you Lesley. I am confident you can do them justice and promote our fair city and its marvels!
-
Well I have to post them now, don't I. Fortunately my camera is not a write-off as I thought in my later Australian days. The connections were all cleaned with something smelling nasty and it works just fine again. All those brand new batteries that I nearly threw out!
On a damp day last week I took these, of what must be teeth (has anyone actually SAID what they're supposed to be David?) on Portsmouth Drive, here in Dunedin. There are 6, in two groups of 3. Between the tooth and the gum is a thick layer of twisted rope at about shoulder height for me, so these chompers are really BIG! As David remarked, they are also guano catchers, being popular perches for local gulls.

Is there a local school of dentistry?
Paddy
-
Yes Leslie apparently they are actually supposed to be teeth.

Thanks Mick, I had missed that when it was published. Of course as the article says, the rope separates the tooth from the roots, not the gum, as I said above. Not thinking straight.
Yes Paddy, Dunedin has the country's only dental school, for which I'm very grateful. The standard of work by students (3rd and 4th year) is exceptionally high and closely monitored at every step by their tutors, and costs, to the public, less than one quarter of what the same work would cost from a fully practising dentist. So many people just can't affort dental work at all so in Dunedin, the local poor (we are many) have this excellent option that others through the country don't. At present, roughly 75% of dental students come from China, Iran and parts of S E Asia and are paying students, at a much higher rate than NZers are.

So few contributions to this esteemed thread? I expected it to be overwhelmed with horticultural 'hiccups' ... perhaps we are too consumed with pure beauty to notice the glorious 'cock-ups' in our gardens? ;D
A public garden feature in the centre of Lugano ... not a tragedy, but what a waste ... this could have been sensational?
