Title: Cypripedium Seed
Post by: Kristl Walek on September 22, 2010, 12:00:55 AM
I've had numerous requests from forumnists for seed of various Cypripedium species.
Sadly, although I have hunted high and low in all my outings, I have not been able to find a single pod of Cypripedium acaule (the most requested). This is astounding to me; as I could have collected hundreds of these in Ontario (where the species is not as prevalent as here). However, I *know* the problem---and it has a white tail. The lack of the seed pod is just another indicator of the ridiculous populations of deer in Nova Scotia.

HOWEVER, on an outing today, I DID, miraculously, find about 10 pods of Cypripedium reginae --I was late---some pods already open, the remainder just splitting. Feel free to request these---but I suggest they are best going to folks who are actually knowledgable about growing orchids from seed. Not quite the same as sowing primula.

How best to germinate the seed and treat young seedlings, assuming one can get germination.  I have two pods on C. parviflorum ssp. pubescens and I'm game to give it a shot.
