Title: Digression to words and adding gifs to posts...etc!
Post by: Maggi Young on September 09, 2010, 09:24:42 PM
Maggi ,

it exist some cultivars which flower a second time in fall -we call this in german : remontieren
( sorry I dont know the word in english )

A literal translation of remontieren would be reassembling but we would say 'repeat-flowering'  :)

I think that the difference between German (and Dutch) is, that we use for instance I do and in English you use I am doing.
Or I work instead of I am working.
So in this case in English I would use the word remontant which is in the dictionary.

The different using (or not using) of verbs makes that we have to think different, when writing in English and therefore use much more time ::) ::)
In our language we don't like (or need) to be so circuitous  ;D ;D

Yes, Pat and Luit, one could use remontant..... but isn't that a FRENCH word? Hans was looking for the ENGLISH word!  I know there are lots of words used freely in several languages, but that doesn't alter their native origin.  ;D

Yes Maggi, that’s right indeed, but the French use it in a lot of other ways too, like:  remontant for animatedly, which a in some way means the same  :)
The French use also the word refleurir to describe a second flowering period.
But we have a lot of French members who will know this better than I.

We Europeans do have a lot of words in common caused by the influence of the Romans.  French words are used throughout the continent caused by the Napoleon troops. And in GB of course many words will have survived since you British folk got separated from the continent and have to live on an island ;D ;D ;D

Will have to find out how it works without extra click ???
Just learning ;D

I believe it has to be under a certain pixel size dimensionally, the forum has a setting that will display an image as a smaller "thumbnail", requiring a click to view it fullsize, however that behavior only kicks in if the image posted is greater than a certain pixel dimension (in either X or Y direction), not sure what it is set for on SRGC.

Here's a version that has the aspect ratio squished down to 80 x 80 pixels, which will work as one of those jazzy (or annoying, depending on one's vantage point) animated avatars.

Right, as it is clearly me, doing all the hard work in the front seat... I guess I'd prefer Luit's vehicle and take the Chunnel in future..

 ;D ;D

It also allows to load more bags of John Innes on the way home...

Luc, it was clear to me in Maggi's animation that you were in the front, it lies much deeper  ;D ;D ;D

I will prefer the ferry when I'm hopping  ::

PS I made this animation here to try making a picture in the text. I hope it works :-\

Thanks Maggi, on track now.
Re I work or I am working. We'd use both in English Luit, but I work would probably mean that I have a job and go to work whereas I am working would mean that I am actually DOING the work, now.

Iris growers use the word "remomtant" for re-blooming irises.
