Title: Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle at Merano, South Tyrol, Italy
Post by: ruweiss on August 06, 2010, 09:31:02 PM
During our holidays in the Dolomites we took the chance to visit this famous place, stated
as Italy's most beautiful garden. The mild climate there allows the cultivation of many tender
plants, a limonaia with a fine collection of citrus plants gets covered and heated during the
frosty season, there is also a place for cactii and succulents with the same facilities.
Due to the hot weather at our stay we were not able to visit all the places in this beautiful
garden, but we will be back in an other time.

Rudi,

This seems an amazing garden. I adore the lotus flowers.

Oh, thank you so much - so beautiful.

I managed to germinate some seed once but lost the plants in their first winter.

Beautiful, Rudi,

I saw a lovely planting in the Villa Carlota on Lake Maggiore in early July but only one plant was in flower at the time, such a disappointment.

What a wonderful place!
So much to see there, with such a variety of plantings.
The high viewpoint is very useful for some of these stunning photos - but I am very glad just to sit here and enjoy them , rather than have to walk on to that perilous viewing platform , in pic 198, myself!  :o

How old would the castle be, Rudi? It looks to be in perfect condition.

In the year1300 a small castle was built at this place, the Trauttmansdorff dynasty began to build
a bigger object in 1543 and lived there until 1846. Various owners used it until the Provincial government
of Bolzano made the Museum of Tourism in these rooms, surrounded by these splendid gardens of the
Merano Botanical Garden.
