Title: Pictures needed for a Talk! Help!
Post by: cynthia sladen on July 25, 2010, 02:24:31 PM
Somehow I've allowed myself to be dobbed in to do a talk on "Gardens of Ancient Egypt". Curse my fondness for both gardening and archeology.
Would any Forumists be able to supply me with pictures of these plants/trees, please?
Acacia nilotica
Balanites aegyptiaca
Centaurea depressa
Dalbergia melanoxylon (Ebony)
Ficus sycomorus (including the fruit, please)
Hyphaene thebaica (Doum Palm)
Minusops laurifolius (Persea)
Moringa pterygosperma
Picris asplenoides
Tamarix nilotica
Zizyphus spina-christi

Fermi assured me that someone on the Forum would be able to help and I will of course acknowledge any contributions.
regards
Cynthia

Sorry,
I meant to say, "Please send me a PM and I'll give you my e-mail address to which you can send the pics electronically"
Only 3 weeks before the talk is to be done, Help!

Cynthia,

would love to attend that talk. Since I'm an archaeologist, it sounds very interesting to me.

I'm really sorry I can't help you with pictures of these plants, too cold over here. But I'm sure someone else will be able to help you.

Cheers

Wim

Who bullied you into that Cynthia? Was it Otto? Fermi? Tim?

Don't know if it helps, but among others, Iris susiana is pictured inside some of the Egyptian pyramid tombs, apparently brought from Israel/Palaestine by the ancient Egyptians. It's likely therefore, that they grew it, in which case, surely other bulby things from the Middle East.

Thanks Lesley. The small plants they grew are not a problem. Its the trees that I am having difficulties with. I assumed the Bot. Garden in Melbourne would grow some of them but they do not.
Looking forward to seeing you in Sept. Cynthia

There are pictures of quite a few of these species on Wikipedia, you'll have to double-check, but I would assume most are released under the Gnu licence and available to use free of charge.
