Hi Dabi,
Like a lot of forumists have already said, you have a great collection of oxalis! :o
I saw your comment on the Salmon form of Oxalis hirta which I posted on an earlier thread.
Are there restrictions on sending bulbs to you from Australia?
Please let me know if you'd like me to send you one (but I can't accept any from you due to our Quarantine Restrictions).

Hello Dabi. Yes, here too, sometimes O. namaqua has been called namaquana and I'm not sure which is correct. I used to think Namaqualand was Namaquanaland. ::)
I may be able to send you a bulb of the lavender O. hirta. It is in growth now but later, when it dies down. I don't want anything in exchange. I don't think I would be allowed to bring in Oxalis bulbs anyway. I'll keep in touch about it later.
What an incredible foliage form on O, haworthioides, very aptly named of course but also like some wonderful saxifrage (without the silver edging :)). do you grow O. palmifrons?
-

I don't buy the plantfinder book....(though I have an old one someone gave me :D....) I use the online facility o n the RHS website.... very handy it is too.... see here:

Oxalis monophylla
-
You are very kind, Dabi, to make this offer.... But I think these Oxalis will not enjoy life outside in Scotland and I have no space for them under protection of glass. :'(
-
Dabi do you belong to an Oxalis group/club?
-
Dabi, you have a fantastic collection of Oxalis! Such lovely photos too, thank you for taking time and trouble to share them.
I really like Oxalis and have just bought a new one from an alpine nursery which has beautiful foliage as well as a pretty flower: Oxalis Hemswell Knight
-
Maggi... thanks for the link...it will save me spending money on a new book, never Knew that I could look up the plant finder on line :-[
Did a new label for my Oxalis 'Sheffield Swan' I am going to get more organised through the winter when I am not busy gardening and copy Ian's way of labelling ( taking a pic, of the label beside the plant ).
Maggi you should be called Mrs Amazing or Queen of the forum you just seem to come up with everything so quickly.
Dabi... I think more of us are hooked after seeing your collection.
Angie :)
-
Dabi you keep amazing us with your extensive collection. I had no idea that there were so very many.
I have just looked up our permitted list of Oxalis species - the only ones allowed are corniculata, crenata, latifolia and tuberosa.
Prohibited are: semiloba, stricta. And requiring futher evaluation/assessment is adenophylla.
That is our GRAND total - pretty meagre :(
-
Hi Pat,there may be only 4 species allowed in,but there are heaps of species already here, they shut the gate after the horse bolted :).bye Ray

-
Dabi, your O. luteola is somewhat different from that species as grown here in New Zealand. I can't show you though because mine didn't come up this year and I think I have lost it. It is not quite hardy in NZ. I'll try to fins somone with it and take some pictures. It is one of my favourites, a stong ciron yellow, almost stemless flowers and the bright apple green leaves are a slightly different shape. It flowers in mid winter. We also have a red-blotched leaf form called O. luteola var maculata.
Pat, the ways of your ICON and our Biosecurity list are very mysterious. Among others, O. corniculata which you may import, is a vicious weed here with tiny yellow flowers. No bulbs but creeping stems and a propensity for seeding just about surpassing any other plant! If it gets into a cushion plant or a close mat, you will NEVER get rid of it. And adenophylla is not only very choice indeed, but - in my experience - darned difficult to grow. I know others manage it well but I've lost it several times.
-
Lesley is corniculata the one that comes in some nursery pots?
-
Yes, it is or it certainly does here anyway. My mother's garden was over-run with the little brute and I believe it started out from a plant she bought. Mercifully I don't have it here though I see a few of the slightly larger leaved/flowered plant with deep red foliage and which may be a form of corniculata. It's much easier to control though it too, seeds about readily.

My God! Will you look at all those buds/flowers on O. palmifrons?!!! Mine has never had a bud yet, in 20 years!!! :'( >:( :'(
And luteola flowers quite well but has never set seed.
Dabi, where do you get all these beautiful species and different colour forms? Are they for sale in Taiwanese nurseries?
-
Wow, dabi!
You have a great collection of Oxalis obtusa varieties! :o I've never seen any of these different colour forms!
Your Oxalis palmifrons is also pretty spectacular - a great clone, especially for flowers! When you say you have to buy it every year is this because it doesn't survive your winters? Or does it flower itself to death? Mine hardly flowers - and usually before the foliage appears - but spreads like crazy!
cheers

Hello dabi!
What a collection of oxalis! I knew the genus of Oxalis had many members but didn't realise this.
Are some of your plants hardy, that is tolerating winter freezing temperatures?
I grow only a few species in my garden, here is one: Oxalis acetocella or maybe a hybrid.

Trond, this pink acetosella is phantastic. Not hybridf, I saw few pinkish in our forests, too, but no one so bright to worth collect. Yours is very good.

Stephen, good seeing my own photo again... I thought it looked familiar :D Actually, it is also good to discover that others have bright pink forms, such as with Trond's plants, because when I was first wondering about what Oxalis I had, researching the potential species such as O. acetosella and montana, photo invariably show mostly white-flowered plants, the flowers veined with pink, but no overall base pink color.
I do love this plant, and while it gets around the woodland garden a bit too freely, it is so shallowly rooted it can't really hurt anything. The soft billowy foliage which expands after flowering looks good too.

Thanks, Janis!
The reason I assumed it is a probable hybrid is that I once or twice have collected very pink woodsorrels from the wild here but I have also once planted an O. montana. Neither are to be found where they were planted but seedlings occur everywhere, some with leaves that are much bigger than normal.

Nice to see yours plant too Mike and! The last picture shows a form very similar to mine but I have never got woodsorrels from seed or plant exchanges.

Lesley,
re: Ox. obtusa.
> ... I think the only one we have is the coral one or very close to it.
There are at least 3 colours in NZ, an 'apricot', a 'pink' and a 'yellow'. I've got all 3 and can supply all but the yellow one at this stage if you want any?
BTW: There is an 'Oxalis-growers' group on YAHOO, PM me if anyone wants details.
Andrew.
