Title: Arley Hall and Gardens
Post by: FrazerHenderson on June 26, 2010, 04:08:43 PM
I expect that this garden is well known to forumists particularly by those frequenting Cheshire.

Address: Arley Hall, Northwich Cheshire CW9 6NA

Location: Accessible from junctions 9 or 10 of M56 and junction 20 on M6. Well signposted.

Type: Formal garden of 8 acres with distinct areas: walled garden, small kitchen and herb gardens, sunken italianate fish garden, long Edwardian borders, topiary, scented garden, rose walk, meadows, rootery, ha-ha, arbour walk...in short, many compartments together with an area known as The Grove in which species and hybrid rhododendrons and more unusual trees/shrubs have been naturalistically planted.

Facilities: Shop, restaurant; good disabled facilities.

Information: The guide book is long on the house and short on the grounds. Visitors do receive a printed map which on its reverse has an informative update by the head gardener on what's good and showing that week. See also www.arleyhallandgardens.com (http://www.arleyhallandgardens.com)

Admission: £6 (RHS concession and BBC 2 for 1 voucher accepted)

Henderson Rating: 4/5 (Well worth a detour. There is also a well stocked nursery.)

Thanks Frazer, you've no idea how many times I've passed the gates travelling between Glasgow and Derby but I've never ventured in. Maybe soon.

Certainly worth a detour, Frazer. It looks like a wonderful garden.

Many thanks for the report and the photographs.

Your description gives a really good impression of this garden, Frazer, and the photos show some lovely plantings and landscaping around Arley Hall - thanks  :)
