Title: Who is the "BD" and why?
Post by: TheOnionMan on June 12, 2010, 04:02:43 PM

HaHA, the BD has just looked and said he thinks it may just be an Alaskan!!  ;D

So, I'm trying to figure out what BD stands for... Big Dog, Big Deal, or...?  Checked out acronyms for "BD" at a variety of sites, lots of BD acronyms, some are funny to test for possibility, still not sure which is right or intended:

So, what's the verdict on my plant:
I'd  say Asian, Stephen.

If nobody objects I'm calling it the rare Aleutian form and will be selling it for a lot of money...

Mark
Just had a look at the links you posted ...

Best options i could come up with were ..

Blank Disc --although i doubt this --i've met Ian Y.in person and he appeared extremely intelligent.  ::) ::) ::)

Belly Dancer --maybe ,as i know he has a knowledge of Morris Dancing ( you may need to look up that one as well Mark......)  :o :o :o

Bikers Date --possible , ;although i don't know Maggies background and how they met  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That's it from me (before i dig myself a bigger hole than what i'm in already) ....... ;)

Cheers Dave ----(where outside it's trying so hard to snow).

BD and Bulb Despot are Ian's alter egos because his word is absolutely final on all matters concerning small bulbs and because he is absolutely RIGID about Maggi not being permitted to plant even the tiniest rhododendron if the area is suitable for a couple of scrawny erythroniums. ;D

Yes, I had figured it out (see previous page), but your illustrative example gives meaning to the "despot" part of the name.  Does this mean when people post images on small bulbs, like the 3 Trit species I posted last night, Maggi is not allowed to comment until BD has had his say (lest we find contradictions like the Frit example above ;D)?

Well, I am quite capable of giving my opinion at any time, only to have it blown out of the water by anybody!! :-X

We originally gave Ian the Bulb Despot nickname because of his insistence that everyone should be growing more bulbs... and, as Lesley says, because he is very territorial about the planting  space chez nous!
He is a reasonably benevolent despot ( it may be that I felt compelled to say that....).... but a despot nonetheless! ::)

As an addendum to this digression.... Ian's full name is James Ian Young, so, last year I decided to "cement" his nickname with this registration plate for his car.....

so the plate shows J1 YBD ... James Ian Young, Bulb Despot
I have the name on his Bulb Despot shoes too, to try to keep his feet on the ground  ;D ;D ;)

I suppose one has to be pretty obsessive and therefore inclined a little to despotic mania to write a Bulb Log Diary every week since 2003 as he has.... http://www.srgc.org.uk/logs/index.php?log=bulb detailing his experiences with bulb growing in our Aberdeen garden.

By the way, the car is known as Verity Vauxhall.... we're  heavily into anthropomorphism here .  :-[ :-X
and here are the furry members of the family, Poppy, left and Lily, right showing off the number plate... and the daft footwear.....

Now to split off this wee side topic!

I want a pair of shoes like that... blazing hot, just imagine the speed and mileage I could rack up with a pair like that!  I'm working on a suitable title to emblazon on such stylish footware, perhaps OG (Onion God ;D).

By the way, Poppy & Lily are super high on the cute factor, even their names keep within your anthropomorphism theme.

The shoes are great fun, aren't they?!  ;D
I had a colleague who got sonme and I couldn't resist for the BD's birthday gift a couple of years ago.  He saves them for "best", bless him!

They are Nike shoes and you can customise various styles to your own colours, plus writing, from the main Nike sites and  order them from their shops too, I expect.  What got my attention was that the customising could be done at no extra expense..... always a good selling point for this Scotswoman!

Sadly, the amount of letters is restricted, or you could gor for "Fastest Onion in the USA"  ;D

Cool, still running in my last pair where I hit 1000 miles last December 31st (running shoes supposedly have a life of 500 miles, assuming one actually runs in them ;D).  Thanks for the links, with no extra change for customizing, I'm on it!  A good selling point for this frugal unemployed Irish-American too.  When will we see a photo of the BD in his nifty Nikes?

Still working on my title!

Here he is pulling faces at with the main object of his affection....apart from Erythroniums, of course.....

Excellent!!  I hadn't looked through those threads before, most interesting, and found the photos of you and Panayoti. As an aside, love the Impartiens repens that Mark S posted.

Now back to the BD, he does look jazzy in that foot gear. But I must say silly me, all this time I thought one had to wear matching color socks... who knew??? :o

On that note, I'm getting ready for my every-other-day 5-miler, on this cool, cloudy, drizzly, misty, foggy morning (sound familiar to you UK folks ;D), the question is, should I try bright-color mismatched socks as a possible running performance enhancement?  It's worth a try.

By the way, how does the BD feel about onions, or does his despotism mostly reign supreme over Erythronium?

He's very fond of onions.... on the table and growing with flowers.... :)
erythroniums are just at the very top of his tree , though!

It used to be tough to find brightly patterned socks and Ian loves colour, so he started mixing plain socks of brighter shades to cheer himself up... now he gets the brightest available, patterned or plain and always mixes them!  At least i f he gets run over by a bus and rendered otherwise unrecognisable, I'll be able to claim the body because of the socks........ ::)

After the initial chuckle... heaven forbid!
