Want to know more about landscape and plants of Cumbria and the North Pennines then this year long festival is a suitable entry point. There are plenty of activities (over 180). I'm only sorry that I didn't bring it to the attention of the forum earlier. Anyhow, I'll seek to make amends for the 2011 festival.

17 April - Damson Day, Lyth Valley. Famous event
2 May - Spectacular Orchids and sunning cowslips, guided walk with identification.
5 May - Thistle day, Kendal
2 -8 June - festival walks/talks with botanists. Arnside
4 June - Lady's Slipper Orchid project.
18 June - the flora of Hincaster trailway (walk/talk)
27 June - North Pennines Haymeadow Walk and talk in a traditional upland hay meadow.
27 June - Guided wildflower walk to see speciality plants of North Pennines.
30 July - wildflowers in Watermillock Churchyard
25 Sept - One day course on the early Northern botanists (Turner, Gerard and Parkinson). At Acorn Bank, National Trust.
17 Oct - Apple Day -free advice on growing, identification etc.
15 Nov - ancient trees of Sizergh, walk and identification
You can se that there is a broad range of activities to cover most interests.

Damson Day. Mmmm. I once made some Damson wine. As wine it was a disaster, as paint stripper it was formidable!

Probably the first paint stripper products were better drunk than slapped onto the walls? ;D
