Title: Dact from Seed
Post by: Slug Killer on May 29, 2010, 06:25:44 PM
Only flasked a few as it was Pleione I was interested in flasking but my first Dacts have just been transfered to soil.

Fingers crossed for them.

Dactylorhiza praetermissa

Hi Graham

They were sown Jan/Feb 09. To be honest they did very little for a long time and then started to bulk up a bit. The others below were sown the same time but were far smaller and I reflasked in Feb this year. Ophrys apifera I found difficult but I can now put it down to bad seed as I tried some new seed and have had fantastic germination. Early days yet for the Ophrys as well as Cyp flavum alba which is also growing quite well.

Sorry for picture quality but I did it quickly on my iphone.

Would like to try some other Dacts but it's getting the seed.

I don't have anyone requesting Datc. seeds, so i can probably supply some dact seeds. Cant' promise i'm faster than the bees but i can try to to dome controlled polination. I have majalis, purpurea, foliosa and saccifera. ANy interest?

Other than for mass production would you really need to use flasks for propagating dacts. From the number of forumists that have self sown plants in all corners of their gardens it seems it would be easy enough to sow seed in a normal way.
Although mass production may just bring down the prices which would be good.

Graham

I've thrown loads of viable dact seed around my garden and never had more than one plant shoot up. I'd like to try several and hopefully get some seed of the rare ones and give them a go.
