Tomorrow morning at 9am Harold McBride, Susan Tindall and other Northern Irish gardeners will be on Radio Ulster's gardening programme Gardener's Corner. You will be able to hear them on SKY channel 0118 or here http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/gardenerscorner/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/gardenerscorner/)

Maybe no-one listened? I made a mistake with the date. Apologies for that. They are on this Saturday April 3rd
-
On Friday 21stMay 2010 at 1500 hrs on BBC Radio 4, UK,( or on digital, I think !) there is the first airing of a programme of Gardeners' Question Time , recorded at Aboyne in Aberdeenshire in April. This programme will be repeated on Sunday 23rd May at 1400 hrs.
When Liz Mills was asked to appear in a recording in Edinburgh towards the end of last year, her segment was shelved because of the untimely death of GQT team member John Cushnie. This time Ian Young was invited along to speak about the Scottish Rock Garden Club. Carole Baxter, of the BBC TV programme and radio Beechgrove Potting Shed colleague of Ian, and herself a member of SRGC is on the panel.
Let's hope the dates are correct.... the Radio Times got it wrong this week!
-
I've just appeared on last week's Gardeners World show. It's on iplayer for a month.. I'm on near the end about 23 mins in.. :)
-
I missed that, Kaye..... I'm off for a look now!
Aha! Found it, Episode 10.... as usual, the BBC listing is not logical!!

Had a trip to Crûg Nursery today and I drove back on the A55 North Wales coast road and the road goes under the Conwy river estuary by means of a long tunnel. Just as I reached the tunnel, I heard Ian's dulcet tones on Gardeners' question time. Of course, there is no signal in the tunnel, so I missed most of it. Just as well there's chance to listen again:

I tuned in and enjoyed the piece, Mark.... I hope you are getting paid for the camera link-ups to your boxes!!

I asked for money for providing updates and videos so after saying they can't link to youtube they have decided they can.
They also want to do a possible 30 minute programme based on my interest. I'll get them then!
It sounded great this morning - I'm about half way through the programme - with only a couple of edits and a few dropped words here and there.
-
Blast the BBC. What would be so difficult or such a big deal about making these programmes available outside the UK? >:(
-
Heard Ian on player - the BBC could do no better than engage Ian as John Cushnie's successor.

Thanks for the link Diane :)
Although the programe is some 40 minutes in duration i have just managed to track IY ,(Scottie ;)), down at about the 28 min mark ;D.
Cheers dave.

I wonder why t00lie can get the programme and Lesley cannot?

Frazer, what a super compliment... Ian is greatly touched, thank you.
-
I'll ask Dave how he does it. Any time I go to a BBC link I get a box saying the programme is not available outside the UK. Ann and Bill have given me links too, with the same results.

Forumist appearing on British Televison this week !
Anthony Darby... now relocated to New Zealand, will be appearing on BBC TV on Friday, at 1800 hrs in a programme recorded some months ago. The programme is the quiz show "Eggheads" where teams of five compete with a team of five "Eggheads"... who are all winners of various quiz programmes over many years..... multiple winners of Mastermind, Brain of Britain, etc.
Anthony took part with some of his colleagues from his choir in Dunblane and their efforts can be seen this coming Friday.
The programme is shown on BBC2 in Scotland at 6pm.... times for other parts of the UK may vary and some of you lucky people will be able to catch it on the BBC i-player
The game is played by four of the challengers who compete head to head with someone from the Eggheads on various subjects, Art and Films, History and so on and for the final round the winners of their individual rounds and the remaining player from each team compete together in a general knowledge round. So, the final round may result in one person against five!
The Eggheads didn't come by their name lightly... they're a canny bunch and quite formidable opponents.
Do look out for it if you can... it's good fun.... :)
Here's a picture of Anthony and his Team with the Eggheads..... to the extreme left are the Presenter, Jeremy Vine in the back and, I think, the producer in front but Anthony will probably find this and tell us for sure.
Anthony is second right in the front row.
-
Wish we could see it here. BBC don't like to share with those outside Britain. ???
-
We get the Eggheads on cable in Australia. I suspect it will be some time before we see this particular episode.

Look out for this BBC TV programme tonight.... £16000 at stake for Anthony and his pals challenge to the Eggheads!!

If you missed Anthony and his quiz team colleagues "Bar5" on the programme it is available for some folks via the BBC i-player
This is the i-player link for those who can receive it:

Maggi,
I watched the programme and a great result for Anthony and his team.
One amusing conclusion - it appears that not all forum members speak with a Waterford accent. As I read all forum postings, naturally I read with my Waterford accent whether the writer is from Scotland, South Africa, New Zealand, England, or North America. So, you all sound different then!

It was an exciting result, wasn't it?
Funny what you say about "hearing " the Forumists "speak" in their posts....... it's true that we most probably all do that very same thing..... must be why we all get on so well! ;D ;D
-
Nah, Maggi, it's just me being silly.
Paddy
-
Didn't they do well, good to see they knocked a couple of eggheads off their perches :D
-
Just a quicky from Bay of Plenty: teams are five plus a reserve (Matthew, our conductor on the left just watched and grinned). The choir was the Rosenethe Singers. Alas, Maggi's link is "not available in my area".
-
Great money to bring to NZ.

Anthony, you and the team were the talk of Dunblane today. All those who had seen it enjoyed your win very much and a good few were going to seek out the i-player tonight.
-
Great money to bring to NZ.
Oh yes Mark, we welcome every penny. ;D
-
As Anthony says "not available in your area" here too. Damn.
PAddy, When the BD came to NZ I was surpised to hear his Scottish accent. ;D
-
Ha, Ha, Lesley,
So, for you, everybody "speaks" in a New Zealand accent.
Paddy
-
Anthony well done, watched it this afternoon. A man of many talents.
Angie :)
-
Thanks to David ("slugkiller") and the "expatshield" I have now seen the episode, albeit on a very slow link which would not download while paused, so I had to keep pausing and restarting.
-
I'm so glad you've seen it in some form, Anthony. I would like to have helped but didn't know how :-[
We thoroughly enjoyed it but then we are regular viewers of the programme with a cup of tea in hand, each evening :D
-
I wonder if it will still be available when we visit in April?
;D
cheers
fermi
-
I'm on TV - again ;D
A new 4 part series called Wild About Ulster starts on March 7th on UTV at 8pm. I dont know which proramme I'll be on. I'm talking about Daubenton's bats
I think you may be able to get Ulster TV on Sky.
-
Hi Mark , you really are a man of many talents,
I dont know if we can perhaps see it over the web,
if you have info on how please let me know.
If ever your in deepest Dorset perhap we can id the bats.
-
Cheryl, I might be in Dorset in June. I'll bring my bat detector but I'm not familiar with some English bats.
-
Thanks Mark, and good luck with the TV career.
-
Have you seen me on television at the Academy Awards 2011, with Cate Blanchett, for my new film "Desperate Housemen"?... ;D
-
Are you really THAT desperate Hans? ;D
-
If I was desperate, I would't be joking about it :D. Still I wouldn't mind to do some gardening with mrs. B ;D
-
I guess my tastes are rather different Hans. ;D As for the gardening, you've only to look at someone's fingernails to know whether he/she is a gardener. I suspect there are lots of hired gardeners in Hollywood. :o
-
You are right! I rest my case... ;D

Wild About Ulster
http://www.u.tv/utvplayer/search.aspx?search=wild+about (http://www.u.tv/utvplayer/search.aspx?search=wild+about)
I think I'm featured in the programme on Monday
-
Mark's piece about Bats is in this video http://www.u.tv/utvplayer/video/135564 at approx. 12.41mins into the video . Not sure how long this link will be "live" so apologies if you find it broken.
-
Mark - enjyed the link provided by Maggi. I now know what you sound like.
I'm a little surprised you don't wear gloves to catch the bats. Scotland is supposed to be rabies free but that didn't stop a bat conservationist from Guthrie, Angus, Scotland, contracting European Bat Lyssavirus, (a type of rabies) from a bite by a Daubenton's Bat in 2002. He didn't recover.
I realise they are small and gloves would make it difficult to handle them but I wouldn't be taking any chances.
-
I reckon if the bat bit Mark it would surely die! :P
-
....."The man recovered from the bite, the dog it was, who died."
Can't remember where that comes from but not complimentary to the man do you think? ;D
-
Oliver Goldsmith, Lesley.
An Elegy On The Death Of A Mad Dog
And in that town a dog was found,
As many dogs there be,
Both mongrel, puppy, whelp and hound,
And curs of low degree.
This dog and man at first were friends;
But when a pique began,
The dog, to gain some private ends,
Went mad and bit the man.
Around from all the neighbouring streets
The wondering neighbours ran,
And swore the dog had lost his wits,
To bite so good a man.
The wound it seemed both sore and sad
To every Christian eye;
And while they swore the dog was mad,
They swore the man would die.
But soon a wonder came to light,
That showed the rogues they lied:
The man recovered of the bite,
The dog it was that died.
-
I dont like handling bats while wearing gloves they can be hurt very easily
-
Oh Maggi, what a wonder you are. :D Thanks so much for the whole poem. I must admit that Oliver Goldsmith is mostly a stranger to me, except for his name of course. Must leave off cheap thrillers and go for some literature. :o

Beechgrove is back on BBC Scotland. On Monday 11th April the broadcast will include a piece on the Haddington spring show which has a small alpine section though whether it will appear I know not - they spent most of the day at the show but will only use a small proportion of what they filmed. Their main theme will be spring bulbs Those of you at the 'Stirling' show (in Dunblane) last month may recall me collecting my plants after that show closed as I spent the afternoon setting up for the Haddington show.

I've tried to get BBC Scotland here so as to view the gardening programmes but have failed.

Thanks. Set up and set to record the series. It's on channel 971 on Sky - I know some of you dont have Sky TV

Watched the whole programme today - should have been weeding - and thoroughly enjoyed it. It include Barn Owls - my personal favourite.
Well done Mark
-
Thanks Art.
I might be on TV again. BBC N Ireland is doing its own Spring Watch in the week leading up to Spring Watch. They are interested in coming to talk about swifts.
-
So... it's going to be a quick talk then? ;)

Stan, I watched the programme this evening. Thought the segment on Haddington was rather good. I was particularly struck by the number of exhibits. I'll look out for the show next year - may be somewhere to exhibit my cut daffs and tulips.
You seemed a natural interviewer - good stuff.
For those who didn't see the show I'm sure that it'll be on BBC iplayer.

I was looking at the schedule David just to check if was on and see which series was being broadcast. Torrential rain here today!
-
Alas we do not have any pay TV.
-
For those with access to the BBC radio i-player, you may be interested to hear the Beechgrove Potting Shed from 3rd July.... this features David Mitchell of the RBGEdinburgh ( and an SRGC member ;) ) and introduces a new Shed Member, Beryl MacNaugton of MacPlants Nursery and well known member of the RCHS ( Caley) and, of course, the SRGC!
Third member of the panel was Frances Pringle and the programme is presented by Theresea Talbot.
Dave Mitchell has been a memeber of the Potting Shed panel for a long time and often mentions the Club ;)
Beryl was a super addition to the team..... lots of sage advice, calmly given.... just what the listener likes to hear! 8)

Sorry that we can't get that over here!
Is Dave related to John M?
cheers

We have managed to tune in BBC Scotland to our set and can now watch The Beechgrove Garden programme on Monday nights. To date I have been comforted by the amount of rain which seems to fall on the presenters - at least somewhere else gets bad weather also.

No fermi, John Mitchell is the son of Bob Mitchell, who used to be at Branklyn manyy years ago and now lives in Fife and is very much associated with the St Andrews Botanical Garden.

I'm being interviewed on Irish radio tomorrow at 2pm. I'll be on Gerry Kelly's programme on LMFM http://www.lmfm.ie/default.aspx (http://www.lmfm.ie/default.aspx)
The subject is supposed to be swifts.
