Title: Rhododendron sanguineum var. haemaleum

Hello to you all!

I dare to write here in order to ask information about this rhodo.

Does someone have it? How difficult is to grow?

And, above all, where could I find it to buy?
I know that English nurseries have many things, but the expedition prices are very high. Nurseries on the continent would be better  :P (no offense...)

In an older German book the species is described to need winter protection in Germany. But don't think you need this in Italy.
Must look tomorrow at work if a specialist in east germany cultivate the species.

I agree, Uli, this would need a very sheltered spot of other protection in most of the UK  but in Italy it may be fine.

Not that I can find anyone in the UK who has it in stock!

I've seen some good plants in Denmark around the Copenhagen area.  As I recall the ones I saw were usually planted near large rocks.

I have seedlings of sanguineum ssp. didymum which are very slow but holding on.

I suspect summer heat might be a limiting factor in most of Italy but your area should be just fine.

Hello to you all! Sorry for the silence, but I was home, sick and had no internet  :-[..

Thank you for all the answers and the infos.

The place wher I would like to put this rhodo is in half shade and pretty sheltered, part of my woodland border. We don't have very cold winters and it snows often. Never had less than -7°C.

John, my area is not exceeding in summer freshness, but count that it is at the back of a mountain and that it rains enough (all year round) that I don't need to water - almost never do. And still the drainage is perfect!

Does someone have any photo?
