Title: Crocus from Balkans
Post by: Judith on March 15, 2010, 12:31:03 PM
I've never posted before on this forum, and not too often on the hellebore forums where I at least have a bit of knowledge But we've had an interesting Crocus flowering here that we collected at a hellebore site in the borderlands between Croatia and Bosnia. Several bub friends suggested I share a photo.

This sweet thing was blooming with the Tommies and sieberis, early (although everything here is late this year)

Welcome Judith!
That is a nice form of what current taxonomy calls Crocus vernus ssp vernus.  The Balkan forms are often dark tipped and have been known under the name C scepusiensis/heuffelianus.  Others here will be able to make more comment including the possible future name changes ...back to what they used to be called!

A great photo of your Crocus vernus ssp vernus with those lovely purple tips - welcome to this Forum Judith and I look forward to more photos of your plants.

Thanks, Tony, I appreciate the info. I'd been calling it heuffelianus (in my mind I say Heffalump). We were assuming vernus, but nothing was in flower where we got the bulbs. j

Thanks all, it's good to get the correct information rather than guess. Janis, we have your book, Buried Treasures and it spends most of it's time beside my chair. I hate to admit it, but it does have quite a few stains on the pages, both from mugs, wine glasses and my dirty fingers when I come in and need to look something up right now.
