Title: SOUTHPORT AGS SHOW 19th MAY 2007 (70TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT)
Post by: ranunculus on May 19, 2007, 10:42:31 PM
The 70th AGS Southport Show was held today; 19th May 2007 and this special event was celebrated in grand style by former Southport Show Secretary (and Local Group stalwart) Brian Russ from Ormskirk with a splendid display evoking the history and nostalgia of this popular Lancashire based event.
The show itself featured many outstanding exhibits and the plant voted 'Best in Show', Dianthus brevicaulis gained one more worthy Farrer Medal for Hexham's Alan Furness.
Many congratulations to current Show Secretary, Roger Beecham and his hard-working team on yet another memorable event.

Sorry I didn't take my camera yesterday so it's nice to see some of my plants on record.  I just wanted to clarify the names of a couple of onions.  Picture 7 on Cliff's first offering is Allium pallasii.  Pictures 4 and 5 in this section show a plant labelled as Allium griffithianum.  This is my plant and is NOT A griffithianum.  I labelled it as such having bought it as such, and I was a bit doubtful that this was correct.  It was confirmed to me at the show that it was wrong, and I'm fairly sure now it is from Western US.  I've had no time to further research it, so I am open to suggestions as to the name.

Thanks to Cliff for another excellent report of the show

Thanks folks for the kind comments....just realised that there is a little man trying to do some damage to the head of poor Alan Furness in the Farrer Medal picture (set one)....perhaps a disenchanted exhibitor?

you guys are sooo spoilt when it comes to shows. We only have the 2 - Ulster and Dublin group. How many do you go to each year?

The past few years, I've gone to  about 13 - 15.  Sometimes it's almost too many, doesn't give time to actually look after the plants when the shows are every week without a break.  But it gets to be an addiction and if there isn't one, I sort of miss it.

Mick, thanks for the extra pix... I do think the three flowers standing shoulder to shoulder on the Celmisia philocremna remind me of the Beverley Sisters...about to burst into song.
We don't see much of the Australian Diuris maculata up here... these Diuris have a surprised look with their wide "ears"... I do like a plant with personality!

Great pics Cliff and Mick. I saw Cliff snapping away and was going to take some myself but decided to leg it off home to watch Man U thrash Chelsea but twas not to be (the ball was over the line Ref!!!) Let's hope that Livepool can make a better fist of it tomorrow.
Anthony my Cypripedium kentuckiensis is about to flower and has increased from 1 nose to 6 in 2 years but seems to be a bit of an aphid. the one kept in a pot as a banker has only increased to 2 during the same period. There seems to be a moral in there somewhere.
