Oh dear, what very sad news, Jean.
We had all hoped that he was making progress, albeit slow, and would soon be out of hospital... sad that this wasn't to be.
Jack was a very special person, a fount of knowledge, particularly about Bulbs which he really loved and someone who was as helpful with everyday friendship as he was generous with advice and plants. One of the great characters of both the SRGC and the AGS... dear Jack will be very sorley missed.
Our very kind thoughts go to his wife Beryl and their son , Peter, another plantsman.
-
Shame. He was a lovely and knowledgeable man.
-
Sad news. Jack was a great guy. Carol and I send our sympathy to his family.
-
We will all miss dear Jack so very much ... a true gentleman and a fount of knowledge, humour and alpine enthusiasm.
-
A couple of photos of Jack.... one from Cliff from the Blackpool Show of 2005 and one from an SRGC Discussion weekend.... you can see in Jack's face what a great fellow he was, I think .

Jack enjoys judging with Carole Bainbridge and, I think, Jim Almond

I was very sad to read of the death of Jack Brownless who for me was always a fixture at the Hexham Show as one of the judges. Thank you for posting the pictures Maggi.
-
Margaret Glynn sends her sympathy and told me she knew Jack at least 32 years
-
I will just add my feelings of sadness as well.I also had known Jack 30+ years and as well as meeting at the AGS shows we usually bumped into each other at Harrogate Flower Show.
-
Was it only last year Jack repaired our Enc. of Alpines?
It is a real loss of a smiling face and we will miss him.

I think we should make a point of having a toast in his honour this Saturday at the East Lancs Show, a sad loss
-
Excellent idea Martin. All in favour say 'Cheers'.
-
Not just a toast but a very nice eulogy for Jack at the East Lancs Show yesterday.
Geoff Mawson spoke very warmly about Jack, and how his sense of humour above all else will be missed.
In doing so he recalled a joke Jack had told him.
Jack was thinking about the old days and said:
"I remember the time when you could go into a sweet shop and get gobstoppers, sweet lips and sherbet dabs, and still have coins left in your pocket.
But now, with all these blessed security cameras ..............!"
Thanks Geoff, it made us all laugh, a very fitting tribute to a fine man.

Jack was an extremely warm and generous man who gave me a lot of encouragement and advise when I was first starting down the bulb growing path.
We will all miss his friendly humour and great knowledge of plants.
