March 6 AGS LOUGHBOROUGH SHOW, Burleigh Community College, Thorpe Hill, Loughborough, LE11 4SQ.
Is anyone going to the Loughborough Show who could take photo's of any snowdrops that are put up for award by the Joint Rock Garden Plant Committee?
Cliff Curtis has kindly agreed to do a write up of any snowdrops for this year's edition of the RHS Daffodil, Snowdrop & Tulip Yearbook & I would like to have some photo's of the actual plants that are put up for award, to illustrate his write up.

Hi Chris,
I will be at Loughborough with camera but dont think I'll get access to the snowdrops put up to joint rock. It may be better to get in touch with whoever is taking official shots as these are taken outside. Any photos taken in the hall will have a yellow cast due to the lighting, if you look at report from last years show you'll see what I mean.
Cheers
Mick

Chris, have you tried getting in touch with Jim McGregor, who, as Shows Director of the AGS, would be able to help you with your plant award photo project?

Maggi - many thanks for this thought - following my earlier post I have now had an offer of help, which is greatly appreciated
-
Hope a good selection of photos are to follow.
I will give Loughborough a miss this year I think after Harlow. ;)

Well it was another good Loughborough show. Interesting to see lots of snowdrops which usually aren't seen at this show and the Saxifrages had made it for this week but how strange at this show to have a small pan Primula allionii class with 3 entries instead of the usual 20 something.
I didn't take any plant pictures today although several forum members did.
I did however manage to capture, on a poor mobile phone camera, the first training session of a Pudsey piglet. She knows who she is!
-
I'll start the ball rolling with pictures from Loughborough show
Narcissus asturiensis 'Fuente De' shown by Ivor Betteridge
-
Hepatica japonica forma magna, shown by forumist John Gennard, which was awarded a Certificate of Merit, and was part of a large 6 pan entry which won an AGS medal
-
Cyclamen coum exhibited by Mike and Christine Brown, winning the Cyclamen Society Salver for the best cyclamen in the show
-
Galanthus 'Eslington Halfer' shown by John Richards
-
Managed a few pictures from the show so first few
Cyclamen coum C & M Brown
Fritillaria euboica B & R Wallis
Narcissus calcicola B & R Wallis
Adonis amurensis Margaret Pickering
A amurensis close up
-
a personal favourite of mine,
Narcissus cantabricus petunioides x triandrus shown by Bob and Rannveig Wallis
-
There was a delightful entry of 3 pans of bulbs in shades of blue, shown by Bob and Rannveig Wallis
Hyacinthella heldreichii
-
Scilla libanotica
-
and Chionodoxa cretica (sorry for poor quality of this picture)
-
Keeping on with the theme of little blue bulbs,
Hyacinthella glabrescens
-
A few more, show was quite different from previous years, never seen so many Galanthus, so few P. allionii. Still a very good turn out people wise
Corydalis oppositifolia B & R Wallis
Crocus 'Cream Beauty' C & M Buxton
Dionysia afghanica C & M Brown Farrer Medal
Dionysia 'Ewesley Theta' John Bunn
Dionysia freitagii EGW91-9 P & G Ranson
-
Wow those Dionysia are amazing.
Angie :)
-
next few
Romulea huntamensis N Hubbard...definitely one for the want list, small but with a real quality look
Eranthis tubergenii 'Guinea Gold' Tommy Anderson...as large a panful as I have ever seen
Fritillaria japonica koidzumiana Ray Drew
Fritillaria zagrica B & R Wallis
Galanthus elwesii monostictus Rosina Abbiss
-
That Dionysia afghanica must be one of the largest of that species in cultivation.
The dionysia growers will be running scared if Mike and Christine Brown have taken that genus on! Their cyclamen have been beating off the opposition for years. Such a kind and quiet couple, you would not imagine they could be such fiendish competitors :D
-
Last few I think
Galanthus plicatus 'Sophie North' ....many exhibitors
Iris histriodes 'George' C & S Buxton
Narcissus minicycla N Chadwick...not bthe best picture, could not allow for hall lighting with this picture
Primula allionii 'Anna Griffith C & M Brown..an old cultivar but still difficult to grow well to this size
-
Def the last two pics now. You all may like to know that the Browns gave away their Farrer Medal Dionysia afghanica at the end of the show to another Dionysia expert!!! as they felt they had taken the plant as far as they could as he said 'what am I supposed to do with it now' (or words to that effect)
Primula nana John Richards
Saxifraga SEP 45
-
Wonderful plants and many thanks for sharing with the alpine show-deprived, in the Southern Hemisphere. Although it's old, I think Narcissus 'Minicycla' is such a delightful plant, still among the best in spite of more recent hybrids.
Surely too much salad on that plate for a serious "Pudsey Pig" contender? ;D
-
Thanks so much for the pictures Diane and George !
A great impression of the show !!
It's interesting to see how some plants have moved on in a week since they were shown in Harlow ! It's clear to see that it hasn't been warm yet... ;D ;D
It definitely is a slow/late season !
We might be seeing Crocus in Kent in two weeks ... :o
-
Thanks to Diane and George for the photos of the Loughborough show with the prize winning plants. The Dionysia are stunning; D afghanica still my favourite but the Primula nana is gorgeous too
-
Thanks for the pics Dianne, and what a nice show it must have been considering our weather this year. I can't imagine anyone giving away that wonderful dionysia though, it looks superb.
-
Here are a few plants that caught my eye on Saturday at Loughborough.
Narcissus albidus zaianicus
Saxifraha 'Radway'
Haastia pulvinaris
Iris reticulata ex Adiaun
-

It's not even the first Farrer winner Mike Brown has given away. He's always setting himself a new challenge.
-
Lovely photos of interesting exhibits Rob - The colour combination of Iris reticulata ex Adiaun is wonderful
-
I agree Robin - and one I'd never heard of...
-
Yes it did look interesting to me. It was sitting in a darkish corner when photographed and the flowers now look "bluer" than i remember; in touch with the grower and hope to glean more information shortly.
-
Yes, certainly a lovely form of Iris reticulata. And very nice to see such a healthy little Haastia, so far from home.
