Title: Primula-Hoses, Jacks and Gold Laced
Post by: Kristl Walek on February 18, 2010, 09:15:16 PM
Does anyone have a pinch of any of the following that you can send me?
Or any other interesting "Elizabethan" oddities?

Hose-In-Hose
Jack-In-The-Green
Jackanapes
Gallygaskins

Gold or Silved Laced

More than ample seed seductions in return.

If only.....

Do you really mean Jackanapes? The only one I know is Viola 'Jackanapes.' a real favourite with me but which I have lost now. Would love to replace it but it would have to be locally as it is sterile.

Thanks Mick for that link. The Jackanapes kind are new to me and I'd have to say I'm not too keen. ??? Sorry for doubting you Kristl.

I had all of these forms (and other oddities) in my Ontario garden (and they also did not get moved to Nova Scotia). I've chosen to start my new garden with Primula as my first genus of concentration--and find these are particularly difficult to find.

thanks, david...i am aware of barnhaven and most of the commercial sites....

not embarassed to say publicly that 10.00-15.00 Canadian for 25 seeds is not something that i am willing to pay.

strange too, especially since these forms breed largely true even after many generations, in my experience. one would think that some enterprising souls.....

this morning it dawned on me to try to find my original source for these--a contact in the American Primula Society who i regularly exchanged seed with--and discovered she is still around. so i anxiously await an email.

They may be scare in the public/commercial domain because they are less fashionable at present. Hellebores, snowdrops can be obtained in a million places but even trilliums are less available or lauded than 2-5 years ago. Old gardens or gardens of older people are prhaps the best possible sources. Good luck with your original source Kristl.

Kristl,  --  I have hoses and jacks and also some gold laced, I will be happy to collect some seed for you in the spring.  That is, if the plants survive the strange winter we are having.
