Hi All
I couldn't decide whether to put these pictures in the events thread or the February thread - and in the end decided to start a new one as hopefully there will be other pictures of the Galanthus gala day added by others?
I wasn't actually at the gala - but here are a few snaps of SRGC members taken at Glen Chantry in the afternoon.
Hopefully someone else took pictures of the plants as I was too busy chatting and eating cake - oh... what a wonderful selection of cake there was. ;D
Edit: ChasW, Kentgardener (John), Alan B, Art600 (Arthur), Mark Smyth, Martin Baxendale, Emma T, Melvyn Jope.

Dressed to combat the cold John?
;D
I was trying not to get noticed Anthony - do you think it will work next week when I am at Dunblane? ;)
It was rather chilly - a few people looked like they really needed a warm duvet and hot water bottle.
-
Looks like someone else's avatar needs updating :o
Thanks for the pics John.
-
Bloody hell, that was quick, John! I only just got home.

Anything goes in Dunblane. ;D Lovely and sunny here today.
-
I'm not in long either.
John I missed saying goodbye. Were you in the house? We could go in because of flight times
John suits his growth

I don't think Art broke any speed limits...... :)
-
John - Okay so spill the beans! Which one's in the pot?
Great to see everyone in the pix.
Oh by the way, the beard works well John.

;D ;D Believe it or not I have no idea. The first picture we took didn't have a plant - and then a kind lady standing near us said "I think you should have a snowdrop in the photograph" and lent us one of hers. Straight after the photo I handed it back. ;D
-
It was good to meet you all today, and yes it did turn very cool, hope all have arrived home safely
-
Mark, sorry I missed saying goodbye to you, Margaret and Bob. I meant to head over to the car to see you all off but had to stop off at the toilets and then couldn't resist warming up indoors for a minute, and by the time I got back over to the car park you'd gone. Hope to see Margaret at Margaret Owen's. Shame you won't be there this year.
-
Chas, are you on the left of the first group photo, as we look at it?
-
Yes ,thats me Maggie
-
Yes ,thats me Maggie
Hi!! [attach=1]
you're taller and less white than I expected!
-
Thanks for the compliment,a lot of the white disappeared at the barbers 2 days previously :) :)
Oh and I was asked if I had arrived in a mini.......................perhaps next year
-
Maybe you need a larger vehicle to carry home the 'drops, though, Chas?
-
Mark S, looks like you need an updated Avatar... the raw material is here in this excellent thread. What you think, yay or nay?
-
So am I right in thinking we have:
Chas, John , Alan B, Art, Mark, Martin, Emma T and Melvyn J in the line up? I know that David Q was also there, anyone else?
-
chasw, KentGardener, Alan_b, art600, mark smyth, Martin Baxendale, emma T, Melvyn Jope
to give them their 'proper' names.
Jo features in pictures 2 & 3.
Also there: David Quinton, jamouatt, michael broadhurst, steve owen and I'm pretty sure there was somebody else who I'm not remembering at the moment.
-
I'll sort out a new one this week
-
It's always interesting to see pics of forumists.
Mark, I love your jumper, it looks soft and cuddly, is it lambswool?
I love the colour.
-
I was there (Lynda from Stroud) but missed the photo call! Another time maybe.
-
Aww, Lynda, what a shame... and the other year we only got a glimpse of your back in a brown coat!
I thought you might be there... and Carole S. and GalANNthophile, , quite a few others.... :-\
-
I'll sort out a new avatar this week
Unless of course Mark McDonough beats you to it Mark S. ;) ;D
(remember Paddy's hat I placed on your head a couple of years ago......)
-
Carol Smith was there
Lambs wool jumper? No way. Wool makes me itch and I come out in red blotches. It's a mix of cotton, acrylic and polyamide whatever that is.
-
Live long and prosper Mark.

Did anyone buy Lord Kitchener or the brilliant scented green tipped elwesii? The first from the new person and the elwesii from Simon 'Mr Spoons' Savage?
Way too many over priced snowdrops there arounf £50. All EA Bowles sold at £150 each.
-
And there was I contemplating the purchase of a David Baker, wandering around the gardens discussing it with the wife as I had said nothing over £30,and thought when will I see another,s*d it lets get one, went back to the sales tunnel,lo and behold they had all gone
That will teach me :(
-
Chas,
He who hesitates has lost the snowdrop.
Paddy
-
Very,very true Paddy

Did anyone buy Lord Kitchener
I was too busy signing books to buy more than just two snowdrops, but one was Lord Kitchener. Grabbed it as soon as I saw it on the table right next to mine as I sat down to start signing. It pressed all the right buttons for me - big, strong snowdrop, twin scapes, strong scapes, nice mark, good scent, excellent breeding material if fertile.
-
Did anyone buy Lord Kitchener
With all this talk of Lord Kitchener it would be good to see him in the flesh. 8)

I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

And there was I contemplating the purchase of a David Baker, wandering around the gardens discussing it with the wife as I had said nothing over £30...
There were so many large clumps of David Baker around the garden that I find it hard to believe it really should be priced over £30.

Did they really sell, Mark? There were three left on Joe Sharman's sales table some time into the sale. Maybe somebody was plucking up the 'courage'?
-
Yes, Alan. They all sold. I know two people who bought it, and I think I might know who the third was. I think plucking up the courage to splash out £150 for a single bulb was exactly what people were doing.
-
Sorry I missed joining you all for tea and cakes at Glen Chantry. I was a silly boy and had to go back to the Gala to collect my forgotten order from Colin and then on the return to Glen Chantry I found myself almost at Colchester before I woke up.
We don't have many photos of Glen Chantry so will add a few now. As you will notice I was taken with all the well spaced clumps of drops where one could judge their true architectural character.

Nice group of shots, John. Many thanks. I have only ever enjoyed Glen Chantry in photographs. Wol has visited us here in the south of Ireland on two occasions to speak and we found him wonderful.
Of the snowdrops above, 'Ding Dong' is the best in my mind. It certainly stands up, a big snowdrop, well marked etc.

-
Thanks John for those, they do look fine against the mulch, Sue must have been worn out getting ready! It also strikes me that lots of them looked quite short - am I right? Lapwing in particular I think of as taller - or is it memory playing tricks! Mine only seem to have reached a couple of inches at the moment.
-
yes many were short which I suppose could be put down to the cold weather.
It was brought to my attention today that Rob wasnt there.
-
Essex Rob (robsorchids) or Midlands Rob ?
-
robsorchids.
John Grimshaw gave a brilliant talk on why bulbs wouldnt be lifted while growing.
-
Rob doesn't seem to be anywhere. ???
-
I just sent a text to Joe. Rob was there. Did he speak to anyone? He didnt speak to me. What a shame.
-
John Grimshaw gave a brilliant talk on why bulbs wouldnt be lifted while growing.
I heard that one at the CGS last year. It was quite unarguable.
johnw
-
opps I said wouldn't be lifted when I meant shouldn't be lifted when growing
-
I knew what you meant, Mark.... though what you wrote gave me a nice mental picture of little bulbs furiously clinging to the ground and fighting against being wrenched up!
The BD gets quite animated on the subject of lifting bulbs in growth, particulalry snowdrops, who seem to suffer a great deal from this barbarism.... :P
Cute avatar pic, Mark... perfect heart-shaped mark for St Valentine's Season?!!
-
Maggi
There is something different about your avatar. Ah, I've got it - you are not wearing glasses ;)
-
Maggi, the temporary avatar, is my snowdrop find Marks Tall and tall it is around 13 inches 33cm high. Anne Wright was over here last year and we found one around 24 inches 60cm+
-
we found one around 24 inches 60cm+
Good grief! I wonder if snowdrops would hold the same fascination if they were developed to the point of being waist-high with equally sized flowers. The mental image is a bit disturbing.

Thanks for the updated avatar Maggi - that will make it easier for me to spot you at Aberdeen airport on Friday.

Oooh, errrrrr, ummmmmmmmm......... yes, well, perhaps you'd better look for Ian, then!
-
So we have have to wait another year to meet you :-\ Did you recognise any forum members at the Gala or at Wol and Sue's?
-

I didn't recognise you either Rob with your shorter hair cut. But at least we nodded and said hi accross a flower bed. :D

Sorry, couldn't take a pic today. I forgot that the camera went off on holiday with the family on Sunday morning.
-
Great selection of photos, JohnM..... it looks pretty cold and wet, so all the more thanks to you for the pix!
-
Lovely pictures thank you but the name 'Snogerupi' can't possibly be genuine can it??
-
Gail, it used to be ikariae ssp snogerupii but it has now become a seperate species
-
Lovely pictures thank you but the name 'Snogerupi' can't possibly be genuine can it??
Isn't it just a great name? Named for some chap called Snorgerup, i think.... :-\
I do hope I never meet a Mr Snogerup, I'll never keep a straight face!
-
Named after the Swede Sven Snogerup emeritus professor of Botany at Lunds University.
-
Bless you, Brian; hard to know whether that's a statement or a tongue twister! :-\
-
Better late than never, here are some more photos from Glen Chantry:
1. The rush to get to the Sales tunnel
2. The 'White Garden'
3. Quiet contemplation in the White Garden
4. Heading towards the marquee and a sit down with coffee and cakes
5. Another shot of the Forumists
-
Gail, it used to be ikariae ssp snogerupii but it has now become a seperate species
Interesting comment Mark.
In the 'The Genus Galanthus' book Aaron Davies on page162 clearly states there is no basis for this, having examined populations in the wild and seen their variability. I wonder where it was published and what new information has become available.Perhaps we are moving towards the publication of another expensive revised edition!
-
Rod Leeds told us this during his lecture on Autumn flowering snowdrops.
-
Thanks for the pictures Art - very clever how you managed to include yourself in one :D
-
Hi Rob
I went to the Bromsgrove Gala 3 or 4 years ago (the first & only gala I've attended) & I felt very out of place not because of anything anyone had done but just because of my stupid shyness.......I found it very intense & overwhelming, so I empathise with how you feel, though I'm sure it's not true that no-one would want you to go again!!
I hope to go again sometime if the venue is closer to where I live as like you I do not enjoy travelling very much.
Take care fellow plant lover.
Mike
Thank you all for posting these photos it's appreciated very much.
