Those out-of-focus red patches in the middle of the display are clumps of one of the Zauschnerias. I saw it flowering on one of these highway cuts along US Hwy 199 in late September, 1989 and am pleased to find it again in Streetview.
Fortunately, this section of highway was visited by the Googlemobile in early fall!

I find these images riveting, Rodger .... so glad you find them and pass them on..... gives a clue as to how we might best grow these guys, too !
