With all this talk of birthdays, I tohought I'd post this notice of a re-birth! Well, a re-vamp! of John Lonsdale's site.... this message from John.....
"Happy New Year!
This note is to let you know that I’ve updated the Edgewood Gardens web site (http://www.edgewoodgardens.net) – adding nearly 1250 new photos and removing quite a few that have been superseded.
You’ll notice a slight change in format – due to the switch in 2009 to a Canon EOS50D camera which takes pictures in the standard SLR 3:2 aspect. I’ve also bumped up the image dimensions by about 25%; this definitely improves presentation and shouldn’t make too much of a hit on file size for download. I used Adobe Lightroom for most of the image manipulations – take a look at it if you don’t know it; it greatly simplifies the workflow and ease of optimizing images.
Plants can be seen at http://www.edgewoodgardens.net/Plants_album/index.html and general garden views and the family cats are at http://www.edgewoodgardens.net/Garden_album/index.html. You can choose to view just the updated images, or find them amongst all the others, arranged by family or season.
Nearly half the photos are of garden views taken in spring and summer 2009, the remainder is plant portraits. A few things seem to have caught my eye especially this year. Dracunculus vulgaris has increased rapidly; the flowers were left alone by the birds of prey, the stench was amazing and no amount of Viagra could bring it back once it was all over (http://tiny.cc/GiNUu). The native lilies, Lilium superbum and Lilium canadense, put on a great display and the former topped out at nearly 9 feet tall (http://tiny.cc/sqeUm). My love of Phlox continues to grow, and Phlox divaricata and stolonifera were incredible in April (http://tiny.cc/eiFEO); Phlox divaricata has seeded all over the garden in a multitude of colors and flower shapes, and the scent is amazing on a warm day. I’ve added many more Trillium images (http://tiny.cc/tp8gc), and take a look at Rhododendron prunifolium (http://tiny.cc/qMbY1) and Edgeworthia chrysantha (http://tiny.cc/Gvoj2). The Edgeworthia seems to be hardy here, the winter damage becomes less each additional year the plants are in the ground; they look really neat all winter, the flowers are gorgeous and the scent is amazing. R. prunifolium doesn’t flower until late summer; all it is missing is the scent of the earlier flowering eastern species. I can’t stop taking photos of the Pulsatillas (http://tiny.cc/fRHop), Penstemon murrayanus (http://tiny.cc/3k6mT) and hellebores, which were spared by the weather this year, unlike two years ago (http://tiny.cc/6vcV8). I’m finding more hardy Crocosmias (http://tiny.cc/Si0g8), which add color to the garden in summer and are humming bird magnets. The Oncocyclus irises, I. bostrensis and I. camillae flowered for the first time (http://tiny.cc/Uqfvm). One last favorite – take a look at the ‘orange’ form of Claytonia virginica (http://tiny.cc/nIAms ), which came to me courtesy of John Gyer.
All of the above links are to pictures in the ‘Latest Additions’ albums – the same photos, and more, are in the full garden and plants image albums.
I’ll make a plug for the Safari web browser again – one of only two mainstream browsers that honor image’s embedded ICC profiles (sRGB in my case) and displays them (corrected through the computer's monitor profile) in the manner intended by the author. I love Safari and would strongly recommend it, both for this feature and the fact that it renders pages much faster (on my computers at least) than any other browser.
Anyway – please enjoy the images, feel free to drop me a note with any comments, and let me know the ID of any of the unidentified species.
Thanks and all the best,
J."

Well there's several more hours accounted for. All very well if I were snowed in and couldn't garden but the worst here is occasional showers, not enough to do much good though they keep the air cooler than it has been. The Edgewood site is fantastic and one which always has me turning green with envy. :D
Happy birthday today Dave. Up a mountain somewhere are you? I was talking to John F on Saturday and he said there is new snow on the Remarkables at Queenstown.
-
The "Happy Birthday" is a thread I don't usually visit but perhaps at the start of the year I can wish a Happy Birthday to everybody who, obviously, will celebrate another birthday during the coming year.
Taking the lazy way out,
Paddy

A very happy belated birthday Dave !!

Happy belated birthday to Dave and Andy
-
Happy Birthday all.
-
Thank you all for the best wishes .
Had a quiet day
--it didn't start all that flash when Hilda mistakenly added a further year onto my life with a greeting "happy 55th Toolie" :-\ (and i thought it was was only men who couldn't remember those sort of things ;D ;D ;D).
Lesley--- I haven't been away tripping as i'm still recovering from a crook back after slipping while on a field trip last week --however i've just managed a 40 minute jog with only a slight stiffness so it's improving.
Hope to get over to Fiordland whenever this shocking weather improves.
Cheers Dave.

A 40 minute jog? Are you sure it was only your back you hurt when you slipped ....sounds to me like there has been brain damage ....... ::) :o :P

You'll keep Mrs Young :o ;) :-*

Ooops! I KNEW I was taking a risk there, but I couldn't help myself! Ah, well, it's months till I see him...... he'll forget, brain damage does that...... I think :-\

Now don't go belittling us 50-something runners... although I do worry about the brain department. Three years ago, while driving in the car with my wife, I'd spot a runner running in the rain, heat, or frigid cold, and I'd mock those runners, saying things like "look at that fool running in the [rain]". Now, I'm one of those fools, haha.
Meeting my goal of 1000 running miles in 2009, I added up some interesting statistics:
158 runs in 2009
1003.4 miles (1614.8 Kilometers)
8890.10 running minutes in 2009
148.17 running hours in 2009
6.17 running days in 2009
Total running time in 2009 in terms of 24-hour days = 6 Days + 4 hrs + 10 minutes
Total running time in 2009 in terms of 8 hr Business Days = 18 Business Days + 4 hrs + 10 minutes
Total running time in 2009 in terms of 8 hr Business Days = 3 Weeks + 3 Business Days + 4 hrs + 10 minutes

Dave,
A very belated Happy Birthday. Didn't realise you were so young - must be all that jogging. ;D
Maggi - be very afraid, Dave has the memory of an elephant. Joggers have to you know, so they can find their way home.

Thanks for the warning , Susan! ;D

Three Birthdays spread around the world today.
Rogan looks to be in the best place for warmth(South Africa).
In Norway is IngerK.
And not too far away is evolutionplantsman or Tom I guess.

Robin, you're in the "running" for post of the week, there, I reckon....... ;D :-X
-
I have to tell you, Maggi, that I woke up this morning with a different idea about men after watching the bluebird of paradise (Natural World) trying to attract a mate with a most exotic dance fit for a queen but she rejected him none-the-less and I thought she was carrying woman's lib just a tad too far ;D

Dunno Robin, perhaps she thought nest building and getting in the groceries were more important than imitating Michael Jackson. ;D

Sorry for the delayed reply Susan --we live out in the country and it seems your message was sent via the old 'trunk' line. ;D
Cheers Dave

A word from our sponsor:
The SRGC does not encourage the sitting in trees ( before or after ingesting any whisky) by our members.... even if a goodly percentage of said members are completely cuckoo.

..or legless ;D
-
Thanks for the good wishes. I had some red wine with a nice homecooked steak (medium rare; lightly oiled and then cooked for three minutes in a hot dry pan, all four of us like our steaks that way). Like the blackbird, I could still stand on one leg. Now to put Andy Murray on the computer to keep an eye on the score. ;D

My sister phoned from Tauranga this morning to see if I would like a Skipe camera and microphone for my birthday, a little later. I said yes so if any other Forumists have Skipe as well, I'll be able to talk with them face to face. (Maybe they'd prefer not? ???)

20,000 day old man discovered in Malvik, Norway
I’ve been waiting all day for the surprise party to start, only two hours to go and nothing at all, beginning to wonder if the whole world has forgotten. For those not knowing how old I am, today I reached the 20,000 day mark – yes, I know I look 20,000 too… :)
This is of course one of the biggest events in anyone’s life – unlike birthdays which happen every year, this is something that for most of us only happens 2 or 3 times in a lifetime and, for a select few, 4 times… (the last one at 108). So, this is cause for a big party, wouldn’t you think? However, not even the SRGC forum, Facebook or any of the other Internet discussion groups that I’m on have wished me HAPPY Twenty Thousand. I’ll just have to get out the bottle I’ve been saving and congratulate myself I guess…
Another thing, it turns out that tonight is also the largest full moon this year (when the moon is nearest the earth and is 30% brighter). Coincidence that my 20,000th coincides with this event or is this a sign? I’m also including a picture of the beautiful view from the house over the fjord just now.
Edit: To save overworked Maggie from writing it: "Stephen: what do you expect when you don't put your birthday up on your profile" ;D
-
Well....QUITE!!
Happy 20,000th Stephen.......I am grateful to you for the use of your birthday moon here in Aberdeen, where it is indeed very large and lovely.......no similarity to your 20,000th day old self, then??!!
Cheers!
Maggi
-
However, not even the SRGC forum, have wished me HAPPY Twenty Thousand.
Stephenb - You must realize we are 5 hours behind you. ;)
Your letter arrived just as I going to post Very Best Wishes for A Happy 20,000!
It will be a cold full moon tonight. -5c and dropping, Lucky to get 2-3 inches of snow on bare ground yesterday.
johnw
-
JohnW: My son's girlfriend in Iceland has also just used that excuse, except it was 3 hours.... ;)
-
Stephen, be generous.... these are explanations, not excuses!! ::)
-
But we won't forget to remember your 25,000th Stephen, when it arrives. ;D
-
My friend Jim Willis, is celebrating breaking through the 27,000 barrier in Blanzay ....hope it's a grand day for you and Margaret, Jim! :-*
-
Hope you didn't resort to your abacus for that one, Maggi?
Nowadays, it's simple to calculate these special birthdays thanks to the following web site (last time at 15,000 days I think I calculated by hand and may have been a day or two out, but who's checking?): http://www.timeanddate.com/date/birthday.html (http://www.timeanddate.com/date/birthday.html)
I now have to wait a couple of years for my next birthdays - 1/2 million hours, 30 million hours and 3,000 weeks (3 birthdays in one year - I'll advise the family to start saving now)!
Lesley: I WILL remember your promise - it's already logged on my PC calendar!
-
Hope you didn't resort to your abacus for that one, Maggi?
Luckily some friends came to visit so I got them to take their shoes and socks off and with the help of all the fingers and toes, it was a task soon accomplished! :D
-
Happy Birthday for yesterday Vivien. I hope that all the presents were of the snowdrop kind!
Sorry I'm late - I've only just worked out how to post a message!

Gail
Hi, Gail, welcome to the forum!
Don't worry too much about 'plantae non gratae' - you'll find we discuss just about everything here, just as you would when meeting friends face to face for coffee and a bun!
-
Happy Belated Birthday Vivien and welcome Gail - hoping to see (and recall/imagine the smell of) lots of scented things in your posts 8)
-
Well I always miss everyone's birthday so Happy Birthday to all for 2010.
Welcome Gail to the forum, nice to have another CGS member from East Anglia with us. I look forward to your postings 8)
-
Thank you for your greetings everyone. No snowdrops yet but I did finally get Martin's book so I'm happy.
Gail, it was lovely to meet you in Birmingham. I had not realised that I was sitting next to a famous author and photographer - your forthcoming book looks like another one to drop hints for :)

:D Hardly famous Vivien, but thanks for the plug - the cheque is on its way (or should I pay you in snowdrops?)
-
Hardly famous Vivien
Mmmm a bit modest I think Gail, well known to all the CGS members!
-
Happy birthday David N and Rafa - hope you have a good day :)
-
Happy birthday from me as well David N and Rafa !
Hopefully some fine weather (Rafa might be in with a better chance than David there... ::) ) - some fine plants to see and some fine liquid to taste ! ;)
-
David N and Rafa: Happy Birthday and ¡Feliz Cumpleaños!
(I think central Spain may have snow forecast for tomorrow :()
-
David & Rafa - Birthday Greetings!
-
Many thanks folks, and a happy birthday to Rafa from me.
Yes Luc, there may well be a drop consumed tonight! ;D
-
David and Rafa, I've just sneaked in with birthday greetings for you both, though it's already the 9th here, now. Very best wishes to you both and to other recent birthday girls and boys. Where do the years go, and why so fast? (The plaintive cry from those rapidly beoming "elderly." ;D)
-
David and Rafa-
My very best wishes to you both
Wish you many blooms and seeds
-
Belated Greetings, David and Rafa!
cheers

Happy birthday to Dirk (udo) and to a "silent" forumist, Brian M. of Dunoon.
Best wishes for a good growing season ahead!

Happy Birthday Ian mcenery - hope you're having a great day!
-
A very happy birthday Ian !!! ;) ;)
-
Happy Birthday Ian mcenery - hope you're having a great day!
I rather think he is, Gail.... had tea in bed this morning and was then off out to the Cotswolds for lunch and a rootle around some "junk shops"..... I thought everything even approaching that description in the Cotswolds was called a quality antique emporium , but what do I know? ;D

Rottle ???
What's a rottle and is it legal in England?
-
Oops! That would be a "rootle", my mistake ..... I am sure that that IS legal, in all the UK and quite a lot of other places besides!!
Rottling may only be legal in Rutland on alternate Thursdays when there is an "R" in the month..... ;D ;)
-
Ah rootle. I haven't rootled in a while but I think I remember how! :)
-
Absolutely.... rootling is like Kipling..... you never forget! :D
-
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and yes as a result our visit to the "junk shops" I bought a trough and a straddle stone for the garden as a pressie to myself. Well someone had to do it ::)
-
Sounds like a most successful birthday all round, Ian! Many Happy Returns of the Day! :-*
-
From me too.
Eric
-
And me, Ian, you sound as if you had a rewarding day :)
-
A great day then Ian. Many more of them to come we all hope.
Maggi, wasn't it the elephant who never forgot, not Kipling himself? :)
-
Maggi, wasn't it the elephant who never forgot, not Kipling himself? :)
Indeed, Lesley the large grey beast it was.... but I was more thinking, in my best lateral fashion, if the old joke...... "Do you like Kipling?"
"I don't know, I've never kippled" ....... leading me to believe that HAD one ever Kippled, one would remember, and thus, would Kipling, like the elephant, never forget or be forgotten......
Yes, I know, I have a most convoluted thought process ......I'm off for a lie down!
-
Yes, definitely the elephant. Mr Kipling made exceedingly good cakes. ;D
-
Sorry Maggi, I should have followed the convolutions more astutely. I was thinking of the elephant's child actually. I had so much Kipling in my childhood that I can still recite a lot of the Just So Stories by heart and in a sort of sing/song voice. "Not always was the kangaroo as now we do behold him....." etc. Which calls to mind that WE BEAT AUSTRALIA IN A CRICKET GAME LAST NIGHT!!!!!
Probably the elephant did too Anthony ;D
-
Happy Birthday Lesley - well that is if it is still your birthday over there?! :)
-
Hey Lesley, Happy Birthday welcome to the 67s.
-
Maggi, wasn't it the elephant who never forgot, not Kipling himself? :)

Reminds me of the even older joke:
Customs Officer - "Do you have any pornography?"
Visitor - "I don't even own a pornograph."
-
I was sidetracked - Happy Birthday Lesley!
-
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh we are all wrong. It's not Lesley's birthday until next week!
-
I didn't like to point that out.... it may be an age thing...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
......tho' that wouldn't explain Gail...... :-\ :-[
-
Well thanks everyone but as David points out..... I'll save these up for a week. :)
I've had to remind Roger that next week is the big day and not because he got it early. He hadn't got it at all. Also marked the relevant date on my son's calendar when I last visited his house. :D
-
I didn't like to point that out.... it may be an age thing...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
......tho' that wouldn't explain Gail...... :-\ :-[
That hurt!! ;D
PS: is there an aged and decrepit smiley thingy (I can't remember the proper name for them!!!!! ??? )
-
Hmmmm.... ageing and decrepit smiley....?
Well, there's this one which is useful for ME....
[attach=1]
this one might do for you....
[attach=2]
-
Nah, that one has too much hair on his head. (Did that hurt too David? ;D)
-
I didn't like to point that out.... it may be an age thing...... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
......tho' that wouldn't explain Gail...... :-\ :-[
No - I think general incompetence explains me - I looked at the calendar, saw Thursday and thought it's Thursday today; must be Lesley's birthday....
Think I've been logged on too long! (By the way is there a way to remove the 'total time logged on' at the top of the screen - it's starting to worry me!
-

Hey, a birthday every Thursday! I could live with that so long as I wasn't aging a year each week to match. ???

You have NOTHING to worry about Gail - yet! I'm coming up to 31 days!!!!!
-
As it's March 9th here in the deep south, I want to wish my lovely friend Otto the happiest of birthdays today. Warmest best wishes Otto. I hope you have something special planned and will enjoy every minute of the day.
With much love, Lesley
-
Mindful of the time difference, Otto gets sent his birthday card "early" and Ian and I will raise a glass to him tonight, while it is still the "right" date down under!
We hope that the coming year is a really good one for you, Otto....and why not fit a visit to Jerusalem with a trip to the UK next year for Alpines 2011??!! :-*
-
Have a great day Otto.
-
Happy Birthday!
All the best wishes to you Otto.
Cheers!
-
Happy Birthday Otto :)

-
Happy Birthday Gunilla :)
-
Thank you very much. Love your hepaticas Robin. Mine are all still under snow but a few crocus are visible.
-
At least if your garden is under snow on your birthday, Gunilla, there need be no guilt about spending the day with friends.... and cake!
-
I have been at work all day but two of my children brought me cake. Plenty of cake ;D
Thanks for the birthday card, Maggi.
Fermides - good to hear that your Sophora is alive. I wonder if mine is after this cold winter :-\
-
With a family who love you enough to bring you cake, I hope it was less of a hardship to work on your special day, Gunilla! :-*
-
Dear Lesley , now it is your turn to celebrate with your favourite drink-whisky- and I hope Roger will have a surprise for on your birthday . All my warmest good wishes and love :-*
Otto.
I had my first glass of wine since I fell ill last october -a great enjoyment .
Gunilla , my belated but sincere Birtyday Wishes to you ,
Otto.
-
Happy birthday!!
Maggi, your new avatar is so cute!
-
My best wishes to you, Otto. I hope you had a great day.

I'll just have one helping please Lesley ;D
-
You'll be lucky!
This is a beauty Erika. I'll enjoy half for lunch and the rest tonight. David can make his own!
It's just beginning to rain. If it goes on for a bit that will be the best possible birsthday present. :P
David, do we get an extra half hour in bed now we're 67? Why didn't someone tell me this morning? (When I say "we," I mean you at your house and me at mine. ;D)
-
Oh Lesley, I thought it was my birthday ;D
-
Racier & racier ;D ;D ;D
and with Mark in his latex this forum is becoming fairly torrid :o
-
Happy Birthday Lesley. (You'll have to wait until 70 for the extra half-hour)
-
Happy birthday Lesley, you are a lovely lady and a great asset to this forum. Hope it did rain for you, it sounds so strange to wish for rain, we just wish for dry days here.
Angela :)
-
Thank you all again. The rain has stopped already. Just enough to wet the paths and little more I'm afraid. The weatherman is saying we will drop to 3degC tonight! Brr.
-
Happy Birthday Lesley!
Arykana - if you bake like that all the time, can I move in with you?
-
Happy birthday, Lesley!
The rain gods will surely be visiting NZ since there is sport being played there at the moment! ;D
All the best for a pleasant and bountiful autumn,
cheers

I think he's just showing off that the weather down there was nice enough for al freso noshing, anthony! ;)
We've always had BBQ's all winter - it was traditional for Ian to cook one on New Years day - and there has always been a BBQ on my birthday whatever the weather. ;D
Thanks for the extra wishes - I've just noticed them.
-
It's never too late Dom, which reminds me to be pleased John had a good one. I'm not very good at looking at the calendar until too late so I miss many. I'll try to do better in future. :)

There seemed little point in posting birthday greeting to dear BlackPudding Girl, Shelagh, here before now, because I knew she would be out all day at the Hexham show, but she will be home by now and may have a moment to check in.... I have a sneaking idea that she may have had a fun day at the show, eating celebratory cake with lots of chums.... and celebrating the Gold Medal won by Clare Dower, too... a good day all round, I reckon!
Many happy returns of the Day , Shelagh! :-*

Isn't this last years' birthday thread?

Isn't this last years' birthday thread?
Oops! Yes, it was, but it's not now!

Seems we all forgot Panayoti. Happy birthday my friend.

Seems we all forgot Panayoti. Happy birthday my friend.
John B
Of course we didn't.... I sent him an e-card from us all! :D
-
These e-cards are brilliant. Maggi is definitely a fairy God sister (she's younger than me)!
-
A wonderful day I hope Shelagh and something more inspiring to eat than Black Pudding! (Though I realize that is probably a heretical thing to say, knowing you to be a loyal Yorkshire woman. ;D)
-
I thought black pudding came from the west coast of Yorkshire i.e. Lancashire. ::)
-
I'm quite comforted by someone whose geography is worse than mine!
Lesley.... were you just teasing Shelagh and trying to put her off her breakfast by mixing Yorkshire and Lancashire? :-\
-
My geography is sound Maggi. :P
-
I'm quite comforted by someone whose geography is worse than mine!
Lesley.... were you just teasing Shelagh and trying to put her off her breakfast by mixing Yorkshire and Lancashire? :-\
Yes, of course I was ;D. Actually my whole perception of black pudding was wrong. I really DID think it was from Yorkshire, and Shelagh too, though I shouldn't have made that mistake. Sorry Shelagh. Besides, we all know it really comes from the butcher. ???
-
My geography is sound Maggi. :P
Not you, you tattie, ;D I meant Lesley!
-
Hi Shelagh, I do hope you had a great day on your birthday.
-
My geography is sound Maggi. :P
Not you, you tattie, ;D I meant Lesley!
That's me mashed then! ;D
-
From the Black Pudding capital in Bury LANCASHIRE, thank you all for your best wishes for my birthday. Unfortunately one of my b'day presents to myself was membership of WW so no cake and a slimming salad for lunch. :'( :'( :'(
-
Like Mark Antony, I've not been to Bury, but I'd love to try the black puddings.
-
Like Mark Antony, I've not been to Bury
Didn't Mark Anthony go to Bury Caesar ...
-
You're quite right Diane.
-
Dear Shelag , a very happy Birthday from me too , I'll post a small present tomorrow , a friend collected a little seed of Celmisia (longifolia) asteliifolia in our alps in February.
Otto.
-
Thanks Otto. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
-
Like Mark Antony, I've not been to Bury
Didn't Mark Anthony go to Bury Caesar ...
but not to praise him.
-
Noble fellow.
-
There has been talk of "young ladies" in another thread.... which reminded me to say Happy Birthday to Ann "GalANNthophile" !Many happies, Ann!
-
Yes, many happy returns. 8)
-
Happy birthday for last Sunday Johnny - this is about as miniature as I can get with a mini larch cone just growing and in the pink :)
-
Thanks RR.
We just got back from Naples today so hence the tardy response.
I like your mini larch approach. :)
JohnnyD
-
Happy Birthday to Paul T in Canberra,
cheer up - you're still 10 years younger than me ;D
best wishes, mate!
cheers
fermi
-
Happy birthday indeed Paul. But where are you hiding these days? I hope all is well with you and Yvonne.
-
Happy birthday!
-
Paul, A Very Happy Birthday and looking forward to more postings from you when you have time. Thinking of you now the birds are so active and amusing in the acrobatic antics :)
-
Happy birthday Paul !!!
(and don't forget to post now and then... :( ;) )
-
Thanks All. This is my first visit for weeks and weeks..... two jobs plus studying has left me pretty much exhausted the rest of the time. Be thankful that you can't see my garden at the moment, as it is an absolute mess. Yesterday (Tuesday) was the first day I hadn't worked (either one, the other, or both jobs) in 12 days. While that may not seem that much to some of you.... I still do feel the effects of my Chronic Fatigue, so it has all knocked the stuffing out of me. ::) Yvonne has unfortunately been battling the flu the last couple of weeks and was today finally diagnosed with a bad case of Pneumonia, so it is on for young and old here at the moment. :o
But.... thank you all for the kind Birthday Wishes, and to Maggi for sending the e-birthday card on behalf of everyone. It was greatly appreciated.
At the moment here we are definitely in Autumn mode.... Nerines are flowering, along with about a dozen different Crocus species. So many things I SHOULD have sent people this summer that I didn't due to the change in work situation. I can't believe it has been 3 months since I started the second job. Where has the time gone. :'( One of these years I do hope that I can catch up on everything, but unfortunately I will probably have to drop one of the jobs if I wish to do so.
Anyway, enough muttering. Thanks again everyone. Sorry I am such a rare visitor at the moment. Just enjoy the break from my constant nattering. ;D ;D
-
Happy birthday Paul. Hope you get some chill out time. 8)
-
Yvonne has unfortunately been battling the flu the last couple of weeks and was today finally diagnosed with a bad case of Pneumonia
Good Grief! Is there such a thing as a "good" case of pneumonia?? :o I think not! :o
Poor Yvonne... our very best wishes to her for a rapid recovery. :-*
-
Happy Birthday Paul. So, you're holding down two jobs... sounds challenging... I could use at least one of those ;D
-
Happiest Birthday greetings to Hjalmar in Sweden and twice as many ( he is, after all, than twice the years!) to the Maestro of the Meadow, Franz Hadacek in Austria 8)
:-* :-*
-
Warmest greetings Franz for a happy and floral birthday.
And to Hjalmar too, a very happy birthday.
Paul, good to hear from you again. I hope Yvonne gets better soon. You know the old joke. It's better to have pneumonia than a common cold because the former can be cured while the latter can't and you have to live through it. Penicillin, a warm bed and lots of (non alcoholic) liquids to drink does the trick for pneumonia. :D
-
Bit late but happy birthday Paul. Miss having you muttering as you say. Hope you are enjoying your two jobs.
Angie :)
-
Thanks again all. Maggi, you're right that there is no "good" case of pneumonia, but it was a relative term (i.e a relatively severe case). Lesley, she's been on antibiotics (no penicillin as she is allergic to it), but because of the allergy they can't give her anything stronger. Off to the emergency area of a local hospital shortly to get a second opinion as to what to do (her doctor suggested it, as he is worried that the current antibiotics aren't working well enough). Not very fun at all. :(
McMark,
I have one major job that is 32 hours a week at present (at a nursery, so I get paid to talk about plants all day ;D), and a nightfill job at a local supermarket between 1 and 4 nights a week (total of maybe 15 hours or so max). Plus one night of Horticultural studies. The rest of the time I fee a bit like I would imagine a zombie does. ;)
And a happy birthday to Franz and Hjalmar from me as well...... and all those others I've missed since the last time I was up here more than a month ago. 8)
-
Happy birthday for yesterday Franz & Hjalmar - This gives an impresssion of the Swiss Alpine meadow yesterday late afternoon taken for you but rather bright light.
-
Many thanks for the card Maggi ;D
-
Many 'Happies', Gerard! Hope you have a good day :)
-
Happy birthday Gerard. 8)
-
Hi Gerard, a very happy birthday hope you get some more Snowdrops, cheers Ian the Christie kind.
-
Happy birthday Ashley. May the 4th be with you.
-

Wish a good gardening season to all of you! :D
-
A very Happy Birthday Ashley :)
A belated Happy Birthday Gerard for yesterday :)
-
Ashley I may just sneak in to wish you a happy birthday on the right day. I hope you've had a very nice day with cake! I'm a little late for your Gerard, but perhaps not all the cake is eaten yet Very best wishes to both of you. :)
-
Happy birthday Ashley !!
-
Thank you all for your kind wishes (although I'm rather :-[ at neglecting this thread).
Yes the cake was just wonderful, light on sponge but laden with soft fruit 8)
A big slice to each of you :-* ;D

Best Wishes David
-
Buon appetito, David !
-
Have a glass of Barolo for me David, happy birthday.
-
It's been a lovely sunny day here , so I hope it has been just as nice for Tony G and for David (monocotman) ..... good enough for a birthday BBQ, I reckon!
-
25oC here. The Aberdonians that were down for the wedding I was at must have fried? 8)
-
If daveyp1970 is getting the same weather as we are, there will be little chance of a BBQ to celebrate his birthday today.....flippin' perishin' for nearly the end of May! Hope you have a good day nonetheless, Davey! ;)
-

Fingers crossed for a nice day tomorrow then! Many Happies, Davey!
(Then we'll have to hope for a good weekend the next week for you and Fred to go on your photography expedition!)
-
Happy Birthday Dave.

Happy Birthday Dave, hope you take time out to really enjoy yourself with your friends and family - your Avatar is great to see on the Forum, it always puts me in a good frame of mind

Melita was 30 yesterday. She has been with me since she was three and looks good for a year or two yet.
The birthday girl doing what she likes best.
-
The best way to spend a birthday. I hope the weather was nice for her. 8)
Teddy's birthday is in December but he had a letter yesterday (addressed to Mr Teddy Cox) reminding him that his annual checkup at the vet's was now due.
-
Roma say happy birthday to Melita from me.. 30 years old and looking pretty good to me. I only had my pony for 15years but it was fifteen years of fun.
Hope she enjoyed her birthday lunch.
Angie
-
Melita is showing her credentials as a good forum member... look at her tuck into that birthday treat! :D
Great that she is doing so well, Roma : many happy returns of the day to Melita. :-*
-
Happy Birthday to Michael J and mickeymurc - hope your day is a good one
-
Thanks Robin, have been in the garden for three hours already, and the weather is looking good for a few more, with a large bottle of 7UP ;D ;D ;D
-
Happy Birthday Michael. I'm sure that before the day ends something stronger than Seven Up will have passed your lips ;D
-
I am afraid not David, 7UP or strong tea, that's it. ;D ;D ;D
-
Happy birthday Michael, hope you have had a nice day and enjoyed your day in the garden.
Angie :)
-
Thanks Angie, I had a great day in the garden and the weather was just wonderful with wall to wall sunshine. The rest of the country seems to have had a wet murky day. Somebody up there likes me. ;D ;D ;D
-
Belated greetings to you, Michael!
And a very happy birthday to Stephen V in the Blue Mts!
cheers
fermi
-
Thanks Fermi.

Gerry
-
Cliff,
Many congratulations on your special birthday today and plenty of celebrations with family and friends
This is the view over Pewsey Vale... a quintessential view of English countryside and a favourite spot :)
-
Many, many, many thanks Robin ... such a beautiful card ... apart from the very large number on it, of course! :-* :-* :-*

I'M SIXTY TODAY
And proud of it!
I'm the life of the party... even when it lasts until 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening childproof caps with a hammer.
I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going.
I'm good on a trip for at least an hour without my aspirin, G & T, and antacid.
I'm the first one to find the bathroom wherever I go.
I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a word you're saying.
I'm very good at telling stories. Over and over and over and over.
I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not as bright as mine.
I'm so cared for - long term care, eye care, private care, dental care.
I'm not grouchy, I just don't like traffic, waiting, crowds, children, politicians.
I'm positive I did housework correctly before my wife retired.
I'm sure everything I can't find is in a secure place.
I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm having trouble remembering simple words like...uh???...uh.
I'm now spending more time with my pillows than with my Sue.
I'm realizing that aging is not for sissies.
I'm anti-everything now: anti-fat, anti-smoke, anti-noise, anti-inflammatory.
I'm walking more (to the bathroom) and enjoying it less.
I'm going to reveal what goes on behind closed doors. Absolutely nothing!
If you are what you eat, I'm cherry yoghurt and All Bran.
I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days.
I'm in the initial stage of my golden years.
I'm wondering, if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?
I'm supporting all movements now...by eating bran, prunes, and raisins.
I'm a walking storeroom of facts, I've just lost the key to the storeroom.
I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN, and I think I am having the time of my life!!!!
ALWAYS REMEMBER: The world was made round so that we would never be able to see too far down the road.
-
Get some service in!! Happy Birthday Cliff, give the bus pass some stick ;D
-
Merci much mate!
-
Huge celebration (appropriate enough, I think! ;)) planned here today to celebrate the Bookeroo's birthday....industrial quantities of steak pie and mash being prepared at this very moment..... ;D
-
Happy Birthday, Cliff!!
Muitos parabéns!! as they say round here :)
And belated congratulations to Michael and Gerry.
-
Happy Birthday Cliff!
All the best for 60+ ;D
-
Many happy returns of the day you old @*@*@*@*@*
Enjoy your day Buddy, sit back, relax and wait for everything to start dropping off ;D
Wish we could be there to share a bottle of champers with you Cliff......maybe on my 70th eh?
All our love to a truly great guy and senior citizen.
Alan & Sherba
-
May I thank everyone in this wonderful 'alpine' fraternity for all your birthday cards, greetings and messages ... they have all been VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
-
Better late than never !
A very happy birthday to both Cliff and Gerry !!
Hope you had a good one and have many other even better ones to come !! ;) ;)
-
A very happy birthday Cliff. Don't start to whine yet about your sagging, etc and loss of memory and need to know where the bathroom is. Believe me, it gets worse. ;D
-
Many happy returns Cliff.
-
Happy birthday Cliff... hope you have had a lovely day.
Angie :)
-
Happy birthday Cliff - boldog születésnapot!
-
Happy Birthday McMark - hoping 13 is a lucky day for you too :)
-
I expect Mrs McMark will be concocting a delicious onion cake for a celebratory meal for this happy occasion..... :o
I think we'll just stick with some caramel brownies a friend brought yesterday, McMark, if you don't mind? The birthday wishes are just as good with those, I'm sure!
But Robin....hoping 13 is a lucky day for you too
.... wait a minuite... is this YOUR birthday, as well, you secretive little devil? :-\ :D
If it is then we'll really need to break out the ChocIces in celebration! :-*
-
Thank you Robin and Maggi,
I took the hint about caramel brownies and will have a bowl of ice cream with caramel sauce this morning with breakfast (hold the onions please).
Robin, thank you for the personalized greeting with a beautiful Iris. Did you notice your post was your 3000th? Since there is a possibility it is your birthday too (if Maggi's sleuthing work is correct), and even if not, then in celebration of your 3000th SRGC posting, I'm sending to you a bouquet of Stewartia pseudocamellia (still attached to the tree) which are blooming 2 weeks earlier than normal this year just in time for birthday(s).
-
Sounds like a great breakfast, McMark 8)
Well spotted for Robin's 3000th post.... those rosy spectacles must be doing you good in more ways than one! (sorry, typo doin you an injustice there!)
Keep it up, Robin.... your support of the Forum is much appreciated :-* :-*
-
Well spotted for Robin's 300th post (x 10).... those rosy spectacles must be doing you good in more ways than one!
Sounds like a great breakfast, McMark 8)
Mrs. McMark just called me up for breakfast, I detect the enticing aroma of a heaping open-face sandwich of peppers and eggs on toast. The ice cream will come after.
-
Thank you so much for the birthday wishes McMark and Maggi and for the spectacular bouquet of Stewartia pseudocamellia - I love the idea of a bouquet on the tree! Yes we are true Geminis - two in one, double trouble, whichever way you want to look at it ;D 8)
-
Many, many happy returns of the day, Robin....I just love a double excuse to celebrate friends and wish you well :D :) 8)
-
Thanks Maggi, I'm having a wonderful time with family just enjoying everything and about to have a BBQ roast pork with crackling (sorry to any vegans) It is the ultimate primeval food and even Jazzy is fired up for the tidbits (The Swiss don't do crackling, can you believe, but they do do fantastic fruit, veg and fish - which considering they are landlocked is especially amazing) 8) 8) 8) a day to remember
-
Happy birthday Robin and McMark sorry no lovely card not as good with computers as you two are.
McMark ...ice cream and caramel sauce sounds like heaven to me 8) 8), a great start to a nice day, enjoy the rest of your birthday and have fun.
Robin looking forward to see some nice pictures of you on your birthday... enjoy your BBQ wish we were there. Like Maggi says you are a great asset to the forum and always have nice things to say to everyone :) :) :).
Angie :)
-
Happy birthday to you Robin and McMark! :D
Best greetings from Germany, hope you have a great day.
-
Happy Birthday Robin and Mark.
-
Many happy returns Robin and McMark ...
-
Your good wishes have made my day 8) Thank you Angie, Armin, David and Cliff - I really love the card of the butterfly having a drink, what a great shot 8)
-
Very happy birthday to you both! :)
-
Poppies are a real favourite of mine Gail, such a perfect photo of their fleeting beauty, thank you.
-
Robin and Mark, I think I'm just a little late to greet you on the right day, but I hope it was a great one for you both. Obviously there was pleanty to eat of the nicest kind, in both households.
Well done on the 3000th Robin. It's quite frightening how quickly the total mounts up though. There must be a better way to spend a life, mustn't there? ;D ;D ;D
-
Better way? Better than in the company of friends and plants..... no! that's not possible!! ;D
-
I agree Maggi... nothing better than sitting chatting to friends about subjects that we love. What more do we want and it doesn't cost us anything ;D ;D
Angie :)
-
Well perhaps I should have said a more productive way. Like doing the dishes and the washing and cleaning the loo. All those things that another despot expects to find done when he gets home. But production, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and I can think of someone who could do with a black eye sometimes. >:(
-
Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. Just got back from my daughter's piano recital (2 hours sitting on a church pew, now my back is out of shape and aching) then went out to a Mexican restaurant for a celebratory dinner... mmmMMMM Chile Relleno, now too full to have some birthday cake. Will need to double my run to 10 miles tomorrow to make up for the exorbitant eating. Lesley, your birthday greeting was not too late... thank you!
-
Robin and Mark, I think I'm just a little late to greet you on the right day, but I hope it was a great one for you both. Obviously there was pleanty to eat of the nicest kind, in both households.
Well done on the 3000th Robin. It's quite frightening how quickly the total mounts up though. There must be a better way to spend a life, mustn't there? ;D ;D ;D
Lesley, thanks for your birthday wishes - saw it just before I turned in after a really great day - the best birthday ever in lots of ways and made even better by all the thoughts from Forum friends plus enjoying plants and buying a plant for my daughter at the Bishop's fete :D and I was so busy I hardly noticed that I'd passed a milestone of 3000 postings until Mark pointed it out - yes as Maggi and Angie say there is no better way to spend my time that I can think of ::) Jazzy might disagree :-\
-
Belated birthday wishes from me too.
-
Belated birthday wishes from me too.
Likewise from me, too! But I have an excuse - I haven't been near a computer since Wednesday! Just having a quick look at the Forum before tea!
cheers
fermi
-
Thanks Anthony and Fermi 8)
-
A belated Happy Birthday to McMark and Robin from me as well. I'm going to use the same excuse (well sort of) as Fermi..... but my last visit here was WAY more than last Wednesday. ;D

-
Thinking of Forum Members whose birthdays I have missed.....
Birthday Greetings to all with this Romneya Coulteri just in flower

Today is the 81st birthday of the "father" of the Forum-Derek Bacon. Happy Birthday Derek, hope you are keeping well and that the Disas are thriving.
Fred in Vienne and Pat Toolan who share the date are mere children by comparison. Happy Birthday to both.

I echo fondest birthday wishes to dear Derek who will, I trust, be celebrating with the finest cake...... happy wishes to Pat and Fred too.... many happy returns of the day to you all!

Happy Birthday! (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i76/arykana/csok-1.jpg)
-
Thank you all for the kind wishes - and especially to Maggi who never seems to forget anyone's birthday - and she always finds a great card to send.
Lesley I always tell my kids that I am 101. Let's just say I do not feel the age that I am supposed to be. Time has flown far too quickly and it seems to be speeding up each year.
I made some butterfly cakes to take into work today as I was told that that is the custom at work - the birthday person makes a cake.
Yes happy birthday wishes to Derek and Fred too.
-
When I reach 70, I plan to say I'm 80 and with luck, people will say "My word, she's looking very young for her age." Or maybe they'll still think "Mmmm, looks every day of it too." ???
-
Lesley, ou never grow old, the basis of your text kb you may be 20 years old one ;D ;D
-
A very Happy 40th Birthday Simon from the top of the hill here!
-
Many Happies Simon.
-
A Happy Birthday to Simon,
and belated best wishes to Derek, Pat and Fred :D

My fondest thanks to all of you who sent such kind birthday wishes to me, either here in the Forum or privately.
The feeling of getting these lovely messages is quite overwhelming.... all I can say it is VERY nice feeling indeed! :-* :-* :-*

Darren & Calvin, slightly late, I know, but difficult to photograph anything in this volatile weather but this stormy scene comes with belated wishes for your birthdays - hope you had a good one :)
RR
Thanks for the birthday wishes and the picture. In fact, you were a week early with wishes so not to worry about being belated! :)
-
Happy birthday for yesterday Maggi! And happy birthday to Andrew for today.
-
Happy Birthday Maggi! Rather late.
-
Happy belated birthday Maggi. You've caught me up again! ::) Fancy overtaking, as I definitely need to slow down?! ;D
-
Thanks to Erika's strawberry dessert ( sorry Otto, none left for you, I ate it all, not even a little left for Andrew today ;)!) and some chocolate sent by dear friends, I'm afraid I am scarely in a state to overtake one of Stephen's joke foods,( see puzzles pages) let alone you, Anthony. ;D
-
Hans, Many Happy Returns for your Birthday yesterday. It has only just stopped raining enough to take a photo for you!
-
Maggi - belated birthday greetings,
Gerry
-
Thanks, Gerry!
Robin, what super colours on the ferns...a card for Hans almost as colourful as his' flowers.... how lovely!
-
Thanks Maggi, the ferns have flourished in this wet weather and I love the layers of foliage colour - hope Hans does too, I think he must be away enjoying a holiday!
-
He may well be, Robin... it'sthat time of year for many folks, isn't it?
Kenneth Karlsson in Sweden has his birthday today.... wonder if it is raining in Göteborg, too?
Well, here's what I find from the airport weather report...
14 °C
Mostly Cloudy
Humidity: 88%
Dew Point: 12 °C
Wind: 28 km/h / 7.7 m/s from the SW
Pressure: 993 hPa (Rising)
Visibility: 10.0 kilometers
UV: 2 out of 16
Clouds:
Scattered Clouds 457 m
Mostly Cloudy 1219 m

So not the nicest day for a birthday picnic, but I hope Kenneth is enjoying his day just the same!

To all my friends I wish to say I am well and hope to be posting again in the not too distant future.
I have my trip to Iran to post, but as this has some spectacular Irises, I am saving this for the talk to the Flemish Rock Garden Society in early.
Look forward to seeing many of you at the Discussion Weekend - not too long to go :)

Many Happies, Art!

-
Well, as Art mentioned, we have his exclusivity... so you'd better be very nice to me... ;D ;D 8)
-
I'm sorry I missed so many birthdays recently. Much else on my mind but I certainly hape Luc and Arthur had great days, and yes please Arthur, as many irises as you can post - after Luc has had his fill, of course.
My son's 38th birthday was also on the 7th. He celebrated by going to sleep on his sofa after a very ordinary evening meal, just totally zonked out with work lately. ::)
-
Lesley, after his accident it must be such a relief that he is able to work.... the most mundane of things can be a blessing in the light of that, can't they? Give John our best wishes, please!
-
I shall do Maggi. I'll be away from NZ (Australia) from the 15th to the 23rd of this month but John, bless him, while I'm away will be down here on a motorbike rally near Lake Waihola. So much for learning a lesson! Glad I won't be here to pick up any pieces. ::)

Happy birthday Mark, you're on the slippery slope now! Thanks for the lifestyle tips, now I know where I've been going wrong. Carbolic and best bitter just haven't had the same effect ;D

Thank you all for your birthday wishes, it has been a day full of surprises.
We were at the SRGC AGM where every one sang me Happy Birthday and I got a huge cake with 'Erythronium 'Craigton Cover Girl' on the top, picture will follow tomorrow, what a way to spend your 60th.
Yes I have applied for my bus pass and as I answered my Mother when she asked if I would now act my age definitely not.
-
Happy Birthday Ian - what is left of it.

To Chloe and Ian, Very best wishes.
Just 60 Ian? You're nothing but a baby.

That Young fellow looks too sprightly for my liking! ;D What's Maggi feeding him? ::)
-
That Young fellow looks too sprightly for my liking! ;D What's Maggi feeding him? ::)
HaHa! Here lies the answer, Anthony.... of recent years Ian's been discovering his inner MasterChef... so he's doing the cooking more often than not.....so no credit to me at all. ;D
-
I'm hoping to arrange something similar with Roger when he's unplastered. He the cook, I the gardener. :D
-
Hurumph. I'm both in our household! ;D
-
Gosh, and here I am feeling very traditional now..... my wife Yvonne does the cooking and I do the gardening (she's afraid to, in case she pulls some special plant out that she shouldn't! ::)).
-
I only do the ironing if Vivienne is away but I'll lend a hand at everything else (except mopping the kitchen floor, and there are certain jobs that only I do, e.g. empty the dishwasher, clean the upstairs bathrooms! :-\
-
CLEAN bathrooms ??? :o :o :o Vivienne must be happy, Anthony, that you are a thoroughly modern man ;D
-
I don't feel very modern! :(
-
Fermi , our very Best Wishes for your Birthday . Hope the heat and humitity in Goa is not too unpleasant for you and Will. Here it is a pleasant 21 degrees and sunny.
Marcus and Susan are spending the weekend with me and Peter Leigh and his helpers (12) are visiting Kenloch and then across to my garden .
-
Yes, fermi, as we have lashing wind and rain here with a temperature around zero, I am trying hard to have sympathy with you sweltering in Goa on your birthday!!
Have a long cool drink ... and think of us with our hot chocolate!! :-* :-*
-
Many happy returns, Fermi ... enjoy!
-
Happy Birthday, Fermi!!
Enjoy the visitors Otto. If you get this before they leave, please pass on a hello to Marcus from me. 8) I doubt that Peter Leigh would remember me from the Macedon sales day. ;D
-
Happy Birthday Fermi. Hope you are enjoying the sunshine because here it is about 12C and wet. You need not worry about your plants because we have had no hot days and plenty of light rain since you left.
Cheers,
Cynthia

Today our WebMaster, that wonderful Admin Man, Fred, celebrates his birthday..... just as well we could send him an electronic card because I very much doubt that any Postie is managing to deliver to Fred out there in the country in this weather.
So, even if our WhizzKid is ageing all the time, I'm sure you will join with me in wishing Fred many happy returns of the day...... may you someday be the oldest whizzkid in the world, Fred!
M :-*
