I've seen it along Hwy 199 flowering in cliffs like the one linked to, in late September.

Anyone visiting northern California or southern Oregon with some time to kill would enjoy the drive from Grass Pants (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.437394,-123.325996&spn=0.05625,0.110207&z=13) (as it's known to its friends) and Crescent City (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.771824,-124.119415&spn=0.227374,0.440826&z=11).

PS: US 199 passes through the Siskiyous, a floristically very rich region. Not only cliffsides sporting zauschneria, but Eight Dollar Mountain (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=42.256094,-123.664513&spn=0.056412,0.110207&t=p&z=13) in Oregon and French Hill (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=41.823142,-123.977795&spn=0.056798,0.110207&t=p&z=13) in California are well known to plant lovers. You also pass near the Kalmiopsis Wilderness (http://maps.google.com/maps?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kalmiopsis+wilderness&sll=42.189864,-123.76236&sspn=0.112943,0.220413&ie=UTF8&hq=kalmiopsis+wilderness&split=1&hnear=&ll=42.331393,-123.940201&spn=0.11269,0.220413&z=12&iwloc=A).
