How many times have you heard "I want nothing for Christmas, birthday ..." Amazon now have the answer

Christmas is different for Children and grown ups.
For me, who likes to think I belong to the latter group the question is awkward. If what I "want" that can be bought, I usually prefer to get it for myself - when I need it.
What I want as a present is either the impossible thing like Primula klattii
or the unexpected that shows that the giver thinks about me and is able to guess something that will be of interest and makes me a little more happy.
To answer the question by "I want the Gadget XYZ" really means that I abstain from the pleasant surprise in order to make it easier for the giver.
So by answering the question I am, in a way, giving a premature present to the giver.
This can easily become very complicated and perhaps we should take the full step and do as the hobbits, who give presents to others on their birthdays. :)

I agree with Gote, that if I really want it I'll get it myself at the appropriate time or else I'd like something impossible like Primula wigramiana, uniflora or maybe euprepes 8)
But I was really delighted on Saturday that a young newly qualified doctor came to me at my Market job, and hoped I was well and fully recovered from my (July) surgery. He was one of the bunch of lads and lasses who accompanied my surgeon on his daily rounds and though I knew his (Chinese) face, I couldn't have placed him in context until he spoke to me about my time in hospital. I was surprised and very touched that he had remembered me. I think those kinds of occasions are very precious instead of more and more of probably not needed THINGS.

Used to, when my younger son was only 3 he wanted to get a sea pig, seen in the fair
I did not want to be extremely fond for him, so I said -that I should divert his attention-
I will get a horse for him
Now, he mention this story for me, and I have got a horse for him ::) would you like to see?

Thanks Maggi for another timely kick up the proverbial :o....I've been going to order Martin's Snowdrop Garden for months. Went straight onto Amazon, a whole 80p cheaper than Waterstones and I won't have to battle the smad Saturday shoppers to pick it up from town!

When I was little my mother would say "I want nevergets". For long enough I wondered what "nevergets" were and where I could get them to keep my mum happy. ::)
