Title: Cyclamen sp/Caltha etc
Post by: cohan on November 29, 2009, 01:06:22 AM
i've been scouting around seed lists looking for sources of wild collected (or i am happy with controlled pollination seed of species/geographical forms) of cyclamen--i've been taken with some of the wonderful leaf forms we've been seeing, but i prefer natural forms over garden hybrids; anyone know of a seedlist featuring such material? i have seen a few on one czech list..

also interested in the red/pink flowering calthas, esp the sinogracilis f rubra (sp?)just seen in Harry Jan's albums and the chinese travel logs...

All my cyclamen have come from Cyclamen Society seed.

I agree with Diane W that Cyclamen Society is a good source of Wild collected seed (and seed from Wild collected plants) and Jim Archibald's current list has quite a bit of wild collected cyclamen seed

thanks, both dianes, i have seen the Cyclamen Society page, though joining isnt a reasonable option, at the moment....

i have a link for the Archibalds, but there is no list that i can see, and it says no online ordering, is there a different link, or do you have to email for a list?

I have the Archibald list. There are more than 50 Cyclamen listed
though all but one are from cultivated plants and the prices for ones
with parental collection data range in price  from U.S. $5 to $9 a packet.
You could join the society for the price of a few packets.

The collected one is Cyclamen hederifolium subsp crassifolium collected
by Peter and Penny Watt in Malia S of Monemvasia in the Peloponnesos,
Greece.  two selections - one dark scented, the other with a 4 cm long
perianth - both in the same packet.  10 seeds for $6.

If there is anything in particular you want, I'll look on the Archibald list
for you.

thanks for the further details, diane; of course you are right about the membership vs/cost of seeds, maybe i will try the society for next year's list...
i'm not looking for anything too specific, re: cyclamen, since all i have now are some purpurascens seedlings, just something natural with nice leaves... :) i'm not even sure i will be making an order this year, just checking sources now, so i will have ideas if i can swing it..
thanks again for checking for me :)

I expect so, Lesley... serious amount of covetousness going on here..... ::)

yes, lots of covetousness...lol--its the danger of seeing all those goodies on this forum!
however, i'm not in the league of covetousness that would go to any extreme length or spend exorbitant sums to get anything--i do have lots of seed of my own collections and others to sow, and there is still plenty of room around here for less rarefied species still, so i am not desperate for any one species, but if some cool things show up somewhere... :)
