Title: Red Hederifolium from Corfu
Post by: cycnich on November 24, 2009, 05:27:54 PM
I don't know if these plants have been posted on this forum before but even so they are worth another look. I was fortunate to be involved on the Cyclamen society field study to Corfu in November 2007 along with Melvyn Jope and Peter Moore.  The aim of the study was to determine if ssp crassifolium or ssp confusum as it was then grew on the island. We were lucky to find during the study a small area where we discovered growing in a mixed population what can only be discribed as red flowered plants. Samples were collected as part of our authorised study and have been registered under the name Argirades group. They have taken a while to settle down but have good seed set this year which we be on the society list next year. I think you will agree they are a unique colour and a good reason to join the society to get seed from these plants.

Sorry Gerry the leaves are average as are most on Corfu, they are however scented as all plants from the island seem to be.

A nice smelling one with this colour sounds interesting. Are this and other special forms of the hederifoliums as hardy as the more common ones?

This makes me glad I joined the society :)

Kind regards
Joakim

I would say yes, mine are in an unheated greenhouse only because the belong to the society and I am only a grateful custodian but once I have enough stock I will try some in the garden.

This is a colour I was looking for :o :o :o My hartbeat would have stopped for quite a while if I would have seen such colour in nature. On top of it scented :o :o ;D ;D ;D. Now I know they are existing, I will wait till I see them somewhere in reality. 8)

A marvellous colour for hederifolium - and scented as well 8) Plenty others have fine foliage so we could live with the "ordinary" here all right. Thanks for these pictures Pat.

Thanks for the information Pat
I plan to grow them in Sweden where I already grow some more standard hederifolium and some coum and purpurscens.
This would be a wonderful plant so maybe I will be luckey to get the seed next year or any following year.
Kind regards
Joakim

Awesome colour. :o I remember how prolific the species was in Corfu - even growing up through tarmac on the roads! 8)
