Nature of Europe part of Russia is not rich. But there are some places where endemic plants are still alive. Such place is a steppe in 500 km to the south from Moscow. It is relatively dry hills of soft limestone with a thin layer of chernozem, black earth.

It prefers sunny dry places. It’s partners are Clematis integrifolia, Iris aphylla, Anemone sylvestris, Adonis vernalis, Pulsatilla patens, Stipa and some other grasses. At the forest borders it could meet with Primula vernallis.

What an amazing sight that must be. This is all Daphne juliae?
-
What an amazing sight and wonderful variation Olga, beautifully photographed. Is it in the Voronezh area?
Thank you for taking us with you 8)
-
What a vision, Olga, wonderful to see Daphne growing so wild in this Steppe land - we have a region near where I live that has the same conditions and climate as the Steppes with limestone too and it is covered with Adonis vernalis in the Spring, the only place it grows in Switzerland :)
-
Amazing pictures, thanks for sharing them with us.
-

Thank you all! :D
This is all Daphne juliae?
Yes. There is one more Daphne species there, Daphne sophia (= D. altaica = D. taurica).

It is more rare and difficult here.
Ashley
It is in the Kursk area.

There was a great diversity and that is nice to see.

cohan
I am not sure it is a lot hotter but certainly much more dryer.

Near the place Daphnes grow there is an interesting sight named Divnogorie (Wondermount if translated). Chalk hills with vertical protrudeing crags. There are cave churchs into two of them. This place has an old history and unusual flora.

very cool landscapes!--i love to see exposed stone, and the limestone is very interesting looking..
-
It is so very good to see these photos of where these plants grow - and the other plants that grow with them.
Beaiutiful photos - especially liked the variation in colour
-
What would be the highs and lows in temp and the rainfall?

Dear Olga, it is great surprise to see this rich variability, which is not seen with D. cneorum. Congratulation for valuable report and romantic pictures. Kiss from Professor Alechin.
-
I too had totally missed this magnificent thread when it first appeared and I thank Maggi for the link and reminder about it. As always with your pictures Olga, they are the very finest and it is a great thrill to see your beautiful Daphnes and other flowers in such an unusual setting, wide, apparently tamed farmland. The whole countryside is very lovely and I can't thank you enough for showing Russia to us as she really is.

Same area but few months later... From July 2010

Lovely to see this area with a summer covering of native flowers. Spring is neat and tidy, summer wild and exuberant, a beautiful progression. I'd like to see it all in winter as well.
Stellan, give Gerry our love. I hope he is getting plenty of cool water on these summer trips. I see you also now have a bicycle for him. How does he manage THAT?
-
When will the variegated plants from last year be available? :o ::) and the one with white edged pink flowers and ..... ;D
-
Stellan
Great you reached that place! Did you found Daphnes? And how do you like our hit?
Mark
Sorry I am not a magician. :) Not so soon.
Lesley
Thank you! :-*
