Title: Where the wild daphnes grow...
Post by: Olga Bondareva on October 14, 2009, 05:53:35 PM: Nature of Europe part of Russia is not rich. But there are some places where endemic plants are still alive. Such place is a steppe in 500 km to the south from Moscow. It is relatively dry hills of soft limestone with a thin layer of chernozem, black earth.

Post by: Olga Bondareva on October 14, 2009, 06:01:34 PM: It prefers sunny dry places. It’s partners are Clematis integrifolia, Iris aphylla, Anemone sylvestris, Adonis vernalis, Pulsatilla patens, Stipa and some other grasses. At the forest borders it could meet with Primula vernallis.

Post by: Ragged Robin on October 14, 2009, 06:57:01 PM: What a vision, Olga, wonderful to see Daphne growing so wild in this Steppe land - we have a region near where I live that has the same conditions and climate as the Steppes with limestone too and it is covered with Adonis vernalis in the Spring, the only place it grows in Switzerland :)

Yes. There is one more Daphne species there, Daphne sophia (= D. altaica = D. taurica).

It is more rare and difficult here.

Post by: Olga Bondareva on May 20, 2010, 04:51:11 PM: Near the place Daphnes grow there is an interesting sight named Divnogorie (Wondermount if translated). Chalk hills with vertical protrudeing crags. There are cave churchs into two of them. This place has an old history and unusual flora.

As always with your pictures Olga, they are the very finest and it is a great thrill to see your beautiful Daphnes and other flowers in such an unusual setting, wide, apparently tamed farmland. The whole countryside is very lovely and I can't thank you enough for showing Russia to us as she really is.

Stellan, give Gerry our love. I hope he is getting plenty of cool water on these summer trips. I see you also now have a bicycle for him. How does he manage THAT?
