There were plenty good cyclamen on show, but none that merited the Forrest Medal, and none of the other plants quite hit that standard either, so that Award was not made.

Great plants, great photographs, Maggi.
The wooden trough with the gentians is spectacularly beautiful. A great idea, well planted and well tended.

more from the show..........
Yes, Paddy, the oak "chunk" made a super trough... I was told it had been planted for about eight years. Given some bonemeal when first plants and not much else since! That surprised me, because I have always found asiatic gentians to be hungry and always grateful for fresh , rich soil.

Lovely plants, looked if you all had a good time, wish I had been there. My phone line was out and couldn't get onto the internet, but its a awful morning so I will be kept happy reading all the postings :). Liked viola pedata and Habrathus robustus :). Couldn't get over the flowering plants for this time of year, I struggle with colour for this time of year in the greenhouse. Thanks for the nice pictures.

Thanks for posting such a good overview of the plants on show, Maggi. The pots full of Cyclamen are just wonderful and the foliage plants are lovely - the gentian trough is such a great display, with all the wood around here I shall try something similar! On a yellow note the Oxalis 'Ken Aslet' is glorious :D Well done to everyone showing - like Angie I wish I'd been there :'(

Maggi!
it may've taken me a few days to get to this thread, but no point being critical about it! ;D

Wonderful show Maggi !! :o :o
Amongst the very many glorious plants I'm surprised to see Viola pedata flowering profusely at this time of year ??? ???...
-
A super collection as always Maggi. Do you know who's was the Ox. p. 'Ken Aslet?' and could that person be persuaded to give a note about its culture? It grows superbly for me but I've never had a single flower on it. I've fed it, I've starved it, I've given it space, I've kept it potbound, I've prayed over it and sworn at it and threatened to kick it out altohgether but nothing! >:(

My own Viola pedata is in flower now too Luc, on the other side of the world, though not so many as that, half a dozen flowers on 3 plants.

That comes as no surprise Lesley - after all it IS Spring flowering isn't it. The one on the bench is putting up a fabulous show in the midst of Autumn... mine have practically disappeared for the season... ???

A prodigal returns to the forum after a year or two's absence and after an enjoyable attendance at the 2009 S.R.G.C. Discussion Weekend and with a desire to communicate amazement: a hybrid Heuchera was welcomed on the show bench in full and glorious foliage effect Delight and amazement!!! I own up to being a great fan of and collector of Heucheras [ hybrid and species] . I can see that they are becoming as popular as hostas though we must be firm in appealing for fewer lookalikes as were registered in the latter. The great variety of foliage colours and forms is especially welcome in the autumn and winter garden and they look so good after all in the woodland garden and in the larger rock garden. O.K. Maggi, I will dig out the camera from its dusty resting place and attempt to post a few pics. In the meantime I recommend fellow enthusiasts to seek out H Blackberry Jam, the best of the silvered violets, H Frosted Violet as a dusky beauty of excellent form, H Mahogany as a warm smooth, shiny red for contrast and H Caramel as it was shown at the Discussion Weekend in all its caramel cream finery. Be also assured that the breeders really are trying hard to improve the flowers too. from Gwenb

Oh, Gwen, how lovely to welcome you back to the forum... it has been TOO long!
Why, hardly anyone has sung the praises of Ranuculus ficaria cultivars in your absence...... :o
Typical of you to return with a fanfare for the previously hardly heralded Heuchera! Fab! Great to have you here again!! 8)

Blackberry Jam? Caramel? and Marmalade of course. These should be in the Cooks' Corner. ;D

I know what you mean, Lesley... all these names, plus the names of so many Saxifraga fortunei cultivars... all yummy.... all fit for cook's corner and nary a calorie between them! ;D

For those of you following the trail of Heucheras with foodie names... see the Foliage thread :
