Title: Paeonia cambessedesii
Post by: David Nicholson on April 16, 2007, 10:27:13 PM
At the South West AGS a couple of weeks ago I bought some seed of Paeonia cambessedesii, put it in the fridge when I got home from the Show and completely forgot about it until today. Should I sow it now, or leave it in the fridge until-when please??

Hello,

I sow all my Paeonia in July/August. You can sow them earlier, but water is not appreciated over the summer. Paeonia germinate in the fall when rains start again and temperatures are cooler. This is when the root forms. Leaves appear in spring. I have had some sit a full year before germination, but not often. It seems mostly when seeds are left to dry for too long.

P.cambessdessii has also survived my cold Kansas winters. -5F this winter and all three are happy as can be.

I am no longer in Kansas (now in east Tennessee), but I have cambess., russoi, hellenica, clusii, and Arum pictum all outside in the garden and completely hardy down to 7F.

Maybe it is a summer issue?

Aaron,
Did you move all your peonies from Kansas to East Tennessee?  That must have been a lot.  You ready to come back to Kansas? This fall the HPS peony sale would be a good time to visit.

Leon,

Yes, I moved all my species and some of the hybrids -- mostly those Jim worked on importing from China. The Chinese lactiflora hybrids are outstanding here in east Tennessee. All the tree Paeonia stayed at my parents house.

I have a wedding to attend in October in Denver... When's the sale? Too cold to move back.

Maggie,
It would be a good idea.  We would love to have all of you to show up.  That pond is pretty big, make sure that private plane is large.

Aaron,
I am not sure of the date.  I will have to get back to you on that.

Leon
