Title: Help with Scadoxus seed
Post by: Cris on September 09, 2009, 09:12:07 PM
Hi
This is the only seed I took from my Scadoxus multiflorus.
As I never saw a Scadoxus seed, I wonder if this is the real seed or if inside this are the seeds.
What shall I do now with this little orange ball?

Hi Cris ,

I have grows many of my Scadoxus so it is not a problem to give you some informations about seeds and sowing .
It is always a problem to get many fertil seeds of S.multiflorus from one flowerstem - here similar poor results ....
Strange : on my hybrid of 'Koenig Albert ' are a lot of seeds .....

To your question about treatment :
Wait a bit until you can remove easy the red skin - inside is ( like Maggi said ) a little orange ball -this seeds are very similar like Clivia and Haemanthus seeds.
If you look carefully you can see where the radicle comes out ....

Sowing is relativ easy :
Clean the seeds with H2O2 (1% ) and sow it on pure sphagnum moss - cover it with a plastic bag or similar to give a high humidity - put the pot on light shade ( never in full sun )
First will grow the radicle in the moss and later will emerge the leaves ....if the seedlings have leaves so you can remove the foil and spray daily with water ....you can also now start with watering with fertilizer....
After one year you can repot the seedlings in single pots ....
If you have any questions more please write me !

Good luck
Hans

Hans, many tanks for your help, I understood all and I'll do as you said, except the sphagnum moss (I don't have it).
