Title: Snowdrop Events 2010
Post by: steve owen on September 01, 2009, 08:40:39 AM
:)September 1, an unmistakeable autumn feel in the air, prompts me into print after the summer break to enquire whether anyone has heard on the grapevine about dates and venues for snowdrop do's after Christmas?

Hi all, we have plans for a Snowdrop day at Brechin castle on 21st February which is a Sunday. ( The day after Dunblane show)We will see millions of Galanthus nivalis and an area with Galanthus plicatus where a few really good hybrids between the two grow. I will post further details later but the usual format is a digital show about snowdrops then lunch in the castle a superb setting wine etc then a tour round the snowdrops cost are £25 maybe sounds expensive but it really is a good day,Anyone interested please contact me direct,  cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Greetings.

I'd like to inform galanthophiles that the Wisley Plant Centre's 'Snowdrop Splendour' event will take place on the weekend of January 30th & 31st 2010. There will be talks by Donald Palmer, snowdrop enthusiast, and many varieties to buy. Our snowdrop list will be released shortly, when it has been finalised. I will post a link on the forum.

I'd also like to mention that we currently have in stock a limited number of plants of a new reginae-olgae x elwesii monostictus hiemalis hybrid, raised by our suppliers Cambridge Alpines, called 'Autumn Beauty'. Said to be very similar in habit to elwesii, but flowering through October. One bulb per pot at £3.99 each. You can reserve them by calling 01483 211113, but they have to be picked up from the Plant Centre, we don't do mail order.

Thanks & regards,

Andy

Hmmmm... Gerard has gone offline, so I will give the website address: http://www.sneeuwklokjes.info/index_gb.html   ..... the map is not there yet, only the info from the 2009 event!

By the way.... RHODOHYPOXIS??  In February??  :o :o In Aberdeen at this time these beautiful plants are still fast asleep!  ::)

Dear friends,

There is a new event in Germany: a ´schneeglockchenspecial´ in Hamburg on 6 and 7 March 2010 at the ´Garten von Ehren Markttage´.
It is a special plantsale with many rare springflowers, like Hepatica, Helleborus, Galanthus, alpines, auriculas, etc.

More info will be available soon on www.gartenve.de

Greetings,

Geachte Heer, Mevrouw,

Ellen Lutgen

Well as my Dutch is not that fluent I googled it
As more and more people in our region seem infected with the disease? Galanthofolie?, It seems as designated arboretum to help these people.

On Saturday 14 and Sunday, February 15, 2009, we will Arboretum Kalmthout, a? GALANTHUS GALA? and a? SNOW SHOW DROP? organize.
Our aim is a program to where? Galanthofielen?, With all degrees of infection, plenty to attract them to come. We are thinking of an exhibition, lectures, a unique sales,?

Like we had relied on your knowledge of this apparently very contagious disease, in the form of a lecture or a lecture for you? Nteresseerd public (advance registration).
If you are willing to Saturday, February 14 this time to make, just send us your requirements to deliver. We will contact you for further arrangements.

If you have additional material (in pot plants, flowers, fun gadgets, unique trashy aria, exceptional photographs,?) You have to make available for exhibition or interested in participating in the sale, you are also welcome this welcome.

Thank you for your cooperation and interest. Pending your message, we remain available for further questions and information.

Sincerely,
Ellen Lutgen

Hi folks !
Not often I post in here but I thought I might be of help here translation wise.

The "Arboretum" in Kalmthout is a well meaning organisation who run an arboretum and who have been staging a snowdrop event since a few years now.
All they are doing here is in fact, announce the event to all galantophiles and ask for people to get in touch with the organisation if they're interested in giving a talk, show plants, sell plants, etc...

For those interested, this is the e-mail address :  collectie@arboretumkalmthout.be

Have fun !

Luc, now you have shocked me - the definition of "noise" lies simply in the ear of the listener. I really love that metal sound
but I also like (and play) the soft tones of an acoustic guitar, especially 12-string with just a good singer like Maggi and me in the background.

This came to me today but I do not know what it says

SNEEUWKLOKJES WEEKEND

Het programma van het sneeuwklokjes weekend is gespreid over 2 dagen:
Zaterdag
10.00 uur   ontvangst (koffie, thee)
10.30 uur   lezingen in de Balkenzaal
13.30 uur   start verkoop bijzondere sneeuwklokjes voor toehoorders lezingen
14.00 uur   verkoop bijzondere sneeuwklokjes open voor reguliere bezoekers
10 tot 17 uur   tentoonstelling in het historische Vangeertenhof
Zondag

Tel 0032 (0)3 666 67 41
Fax 0032 (0)3 666 33 96
collectie@arboretumkalmthout.be

COMMUNICATIE

It may not be at this event - but I am definitely pondering visiting one of the European events in 2010/2011 and would love more details.  I keep trying to look on google maps to see if any of the Europe events are possible by public transport from airports/rail stations so good translations of these posts would be really appreciated and helpfull to me.

Many thanks.  :)

Mmm.... never a Belgian or a Dutchman here when you want one.... there will likely be three along in a minute!!  ::)
So, using Google translate and a little intuition, here's my take on the wording for the notice for the Kalmhout Snowdrop Event for Feburay 2010, as mentioned above....
Arboretum Kalmthout vzw
Heuvel 2
2920 Kalmthout
België
Snowdrops WEEKEND  Saturday 27th  and Sunday 28th February 2010

The program of the snowdrops weekend is over 2 days:
Saturday
10:00 Reception (coffee, tea)
10:30 lectures in the Bar Room

13.30 snowdrops start selling special lectures for audiences
14.00 snowdrops special sales open for regular visitors
10 to 17 hrs in the historic exhibition Vangeertenhof
Sunday
10 to 17 hrs in the historic exhibition Vangeertenhof
11 to 16 every hour guided tours through the arboretum garden

COORDINATION
The coordination of the Snowdrop weekend is lead by Gerlinde Van der Auwera. She replaces Ellen Lutgen who is havings a one year’s break. Gerlinde works on Tuesday and Thursday at the educational service and can be reached by:
Tel 0032 (0) 3 666 67 41
Fax 0032 (0) 3 666 33 96
collectie@arboretumkalmthout.be

COMMUNICATIONS
After evaluation  we found that  while the names of Snowdrop Galanthus Gala /Show sound nice in the ear,  but for many visitors have little meaning. They are only mildly familiar to most.  It is now also opted for the clear Nederlanse Snowdrop weekend.
For the exhibition in the Vangeerten Hall  will some notices will still refer to Snowdrop Show.

There are special leaflets printed again.

THE LECTURES
On Saturday morning there are again 3 lectures. Interested parties can register in advance on the day or possibly even buy  a ticket on the day, provided that the maximum capacity of the hall is not reached.

This activity continues in the House Conservatory. The Foyer and the Bar Room last summer was completely renovated and all facilities refurbished

The speakers::

Elisabeth Reeves (Botanic Garden of Strasbourg, France)
Valentin Wijnen (collector, België)
Romke van de Kaa (greenjournalist, Nederland)

SALES Snowdrops

The sale of snowdrops will take place in the shed. It is a frost-free construction that can be heated if necessary. There is plenty of room and good lighting. The warehouse is easily accessible from the parking lot and completely closed to the public. There is just not much room to move, we also provide extra table space.

At 13.30 hours the visitors who attended the lectures will be able to enter the sales area, from 14.00 hours may also all other interested in the shed. In that respect there is no change.

Nurseries and enthusiasts have the opportunity to sell (special) snowdrops . They can  sell Galanthus and other plants that combine well with  them, provided that 70% of the plant offered for sale are  snowdrops. There are tables available and there's no state money / commission to be paid.

The market stalls can be arranged from 7.30 pm on Saturday and at the end of the day cleared away.

EXHIBITION

In the historic Vangeerten Hall will again be an exhibition (Snowdrop show) with special snowdrops. There is room for both potted plants and cut flowers. This is made possible by collections of breeders and enthusiasts who we ask to take part. .

Plants and other materials can be brought in during the week of February 22, 2010. Ideally, we plant Friday, February 26th at noon so there is still enough time to make a good arrangement. If desired it is also possible on Saturday morning to deliver material from 7.30 hours, but preferably as soon as possible.

All plants and other borrowed material will be returned to the owners on Sunday, February 28 from 17.00.

There is insurance for all exhibits and plants.

 VISITORS

The lunch that was provided last year in the Saturday program (reading, lunch, exhibition, garden, sale) has been discontinued.

The removal of included lunch for the audience to the readings, is helpful in bringing down the registration fee. There is easy access to the cafeteria to order what food you might want.

Visitors to the Show and the Snowdrop arboretum garden just buy a ticket at the counter, they do not need to register.

SPEAKERS, EXHIBITORS & Lender

Speakers, sales booth holders, lenders to the exhibition throughout the weekend get free access to the garden and arboretum in the Vangeerten exhibition Hall.

On Saturday they get free access to the readings in the SerreHouse and a sandwich lunch.

 ;D ;D

I can see why google translate made this translation but "Balken-zaal" means "Beam-hall" (Balken = Beams (in construction) and also the sound a donkey makes  ;))

But for the rest a very good translation, Maggi. You would make a good translator Dutch-English...

If this freeze continues snowdrop events might have a bad show of plants. On the news yesterday they said the freeze might continue for another two weeks. I hope the snowdrops surge in to grow when we get back to normal

Mark, I was just thinking that the early events, whether those for the Drop Fiends or the early shows, might well be hit by lack of plants because of the prolonged cold weather. With luck it will have eased by then and all the flowers will be so relieved they will shoot up in glorious celebration.... fingers crossed, eh?

I think snowdrops usually do put on spurts of growth to take advantage of milder weather but I don't know how long it would take to make up for over a month of the freezing weather we have been having.

After such a prolonged blanket of snow, with more forecast for us tomorrow, I think my early opening will be graced with drifts of yellow snowdrops !( and yellow  grass of course )

Has anyone had details of the galanthus gala yet ? I want to organise my accommodation but haven't had my ticket confirmed or turned down ???

Diane,

You're a gardener, you're going to a gala, do you REALLY think you're not going to buy more?  I know that any resolve I would have of the sort would go by the wayside as soon as I got there and saw new precious things for sale.

Maybe it is a good thing we don't have them over here.  ;D ;D  I'm already poor enough as it is.  ::)

Tickets would be quite limited I think as "The Potting Shed" is a small venue...unless there is a marquee!  We have had several NCCPG Plant Heritage events there and a couple of dozen round tables has crowded it out - although of course there won't be tables taking up room.  Darkest Norfolk indeed, a very long country lane so hopefully the snow will be over!

I got a trade invite and sent my money so hope I'll be okay - better be, as I already booked my hotel (same hotel that the usual coachload of Dutch visitors are staying at, as they've asked me to give them a quick after-dinner talk about the book and how I came to write it - hope I don't bore them to death; suppose I can always talk about my hybridising if they start nodding off  :) ).

Actually, it is nice for drifts of abnormal snowdrops - they all seem to be of the Atkinsii (now know as James Backhouse) type with a strong tendency towards extra petals.

This weekend is the first weekend of a series of "Snowdrop weekend walks" at the nursery of Cathy Portier in Bruges.
Her website:
http://www.alpenplanten.be/index.cfm?fuseaction=artperrub&c=1

You can have a guided walk trough their wintergarden and buy some snowdrops (amongst which is their own selection: Galanthus 'White Cloud')

These are the dates for the following "weekend walks":
Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February
Saturday 20 february
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March (from 9 untill 17 o'clock)[/color]

I'm hoping to get to this, but what is the date , time and place ?  And, which is the best tube station for it ?

Anyone good at this stuff ?

OK, I Googled that.  Now is it something that needs booking and sells out  ???

And is it called the Plant and Design Show  ???
Title: Re: Snowdrop Events 2010

Hi Jo

It is the 'plant and design show' - annoyingly I think the best hall (the one with lots of light and high ceilings) is given over mainly to stupid temporary houses and people selling paving and gates etc  ::)

The other hall is given over to the main plant nursery displays (that's the wrong way round in my book - but I guess the RHS make money from the 'design' element  :-X ).

If you are a member of the RHS and have your card you can get in free on Tuesday 16th Feb (I will be there at about 12.15 that day after working in the office in the morning.  I know of quite a few other people going that day.  It is also the day that the 'joint rock committee' judge any snowdrops put up for judging.  These are then displayed to the public for an hour or two on the dais from about 1pm - one of the reasons I make sure I go on the Tuesday).

I seem to remember that if you are not an RHS member it costs £5 to get in - and I think non members cannot attend on the first day so have to go on the Wednesday instead - but this is worth checking as I may have remembered that incorrectly.

Hope to see you there on the Tuesday.   :D

St James' Park is closer.  In either case you probably need a map because the RHS Halls are not easy to find without one.  No booking is required or indeed possible (so it can get quite crowded).

Good pictures, Steve, but let's not get too carried away here.   A "remarkable colour break snowdrop" would be daffodil yellow or poppy red or bluebell blue.  This one is slightly off-white - but at least I can see it in this instance.  There was one featured at the Gala where I was left scratching my head about what the colour difference was supposed to be.

Even the Dulux Natural Hints range of paints http://www.dulux.co.uk/products/info/natural_hints_silk.jsp look like incredibly strong colours compared to the Anglesey Abbey snowdrop.  In my opinion, you know that galloping galanthophilia has finally driven you over the edge into madness when you start seeing a slightly off-white snowdrop as orange.

Good, everybody likes it.

Seriously, where does it say that snowdrop outers must be purest white or with added green only? Is the white outer ok with delicate green tips but not a virescent marking? True eranthis yellow is ok but the lemon yellow of Eranthis hiemalis "Pauline" isn't? No black tulips or hyacinths? I mean, COME ON guys! And it isn't even my snowdrop.

Alan, its not a question of "getting carried away". Apart from the aforesaid white and green, this is the first galanthus I know of (apart from the fabled and unseen Chadwick's Cream and Creme Anglaise, verdict suspended pending some flowers to look at) that is actually a different colour. Isn't gardening a bit about the excitement of the unusual? To quote Robert Kennedy : "some men see things as they are and just ask why? I dream of things that never were and ask "why not?"

I am tempted to widen the discussion with a proposition about feeding the worlds's hungry with Genetically Modified Wheat but maybe this audience is a bit too conservative for such revolutionary ideas.

Hi Steve

'Chadwicks Cream' is not fabled.  I, and Brian Ellis, have seen it in the flesh and it is gorgeous.  I think I posted a photo last year but a picture really didn't do Justice to the wonderful buttermilk outers and yellowy inners.  Once again, I think that before making decisions on these flowers from photographs one really does need to see them growing 'live' in a group for a real idea.  I would love to see the 'orange' Galanthus for real rather than a photograph before I pass my personal judgement.

'Chadwicks Cream' is very rare - but definitely not fabled. We can keep our fingers crossed that one day it can be made available to others.  #fingers crossed icon#

Bit of an unnecessarily prickly comment there, Steve, assuming that the rest of us forumists have conservative, closed minds, surely?

GM foods are a complex issue. It's not just about feeding the world's hungry kids. If only it was. Unfortunately it's very much about huge "agribusinesses" wanting to dominate world markets with their products at the expense of traditional local crops and local farmers, which may end up drastically reducing the biodiversity of crops worldwide, leading to increasing monocultures of just a few genetically identical crops, putting the world at increased risk of famine as such a situation is much more prone to lead to disasterous worldwide crop failures than having many, many genetically diverse food crops. And that's just one of the problems thrown up by GM.

No great offence taken, Steve. Just that I have some strong views on GM and some knowledge of the issues surrounding it, and I don't think that questioning the implications of major technological developments like GM necessarily implies a conservative mindset that's not open to new ideas. I was just indulging in a little off-topic banter in response to your comment about GM feeding the world.

It's a very interesting topic with massive implications. For example, one of the big problems in developing countries is that GM crops tend to have high fertiliser requirements, having been bred initially for farmland in developed countries. Poor farmers in developing countries are told they should grow GM crops because they're good international commodity crops that make money for farmers, but they get into debt buying fertiliser they can't afford and didn't need before growing GM,  and the more of them grow the GM crops, the lower the "commodity" prices fall, which suits the developed importing countries but cripple the farmers already burdened by debt from buying fertiliser (from the companies who sell them the GM seed). They also can't save their own GM seed to sow the next year because they're not allowed to, and so have to keep buying seed every year. And all this on top of the fact that the whole process pushes out local traditional crops which may not produce such high yields but which provide important food biodiversity as a guard against diseases and pests and are often better adapted to local conditions (needing less water and chemicals to grow).

Anyway, sorry if my jumping in a tad clumsily caused ripples. Let's get back to the snowdrops.

Our snowdrop day got off to a bad start. -4 over night rising to only +1 with freezing fog and snowdrops lying down. Those who came loved spring bulbs in the greenhouse

Major complaint from me - c.20 people out of 80 bothered to come to my garden!!. The majority of people passing within 1 mile / 1.5km of my garden while heading to the second garden. This is the last time I open for the AGS Ulster Group!

Chas

Many thanks to you and your wife for all your spadework associated with getting today's CGS do organised. Take a bow.

Steve

Here, here.  Well done Chas and Janet.

The Dolphins had good drifts of nivalis but Burton Latimer had several more distinct cultivars including some I had not heard of.

David was pleased to win a prize in the raffle 'Mrs Thompson', the first snowdrop allowed in the vegetable garden, there'll be no stopping me now, perhaps that will initiate a little more interest ;D

I'm sure David is perfectly capable, as I am myself  ;) ;) of occasionally showing some grace in the face of 'drop fiendishness!
Doubtless he was thinking of the pleasure such a prize would bring Brian  :D

Sorry to hear there is more snow down south: today we have bright sunshine and Ian and John will, by now, be enjoying a walk in Ian, the Christie Kind's garden before their trip to Brechin Castle.  The snow from Friday is well frozen here though.
I must say, John did look remarkably relieved yesterday as we passed near Brechin Castle to see that there was not a lot of snow about down there.
I would think it will be a perfect 'drop day.

Surprisingly he was pleased and has claimed this snowdrop to be his own clump of Mrs Thompson!  Of the seven people at our B&B six turned out to be going to the Members Day and two won prizes in the raffle (there were only three prizes) so we had a good outing!

Oddly I do know one streptocarpus devotee who is one of the nastiest people I've met, and I would glady put him out of his misery on the excuse that his addiction were a disease ! He's not a member of any rock or alpine garden club, you may be sure!

I'd widen the group of streptocarpus lovers to include other gesneriads and call the fans a Gessie Gaggle!

Thanks for showing the pictures Gerard.  I wish I could see the plants for live.

I must admit that I am always amazed when 'showers' don't give the pots a quick clean before putting them on a show bench.  There are some lovely flowers in your pictures - but all my personal eye keeps focusing on is the mud smeared on the table cloths and pots.   Sorry.   :-\

I'm p***ed off today!!! The weather forecast was for howling gales and torrential downpours today so I didn't set my alarm to go to Margaret Owen's open day in Shropshire, and turns out there are no gales here and no rain, just grey clouds!! Even last night they were still issuing weather warnings, including flood warnings. Too late to go now.  >:(

Same thing happened to me. I was supposed to be going to Snape Cottage today but we cancelled yesterday as a result of the weather forecast. All we got was a few showers and a cold breeze. Bl***y Met Office, wouldn't trust 'em with an open window and a sprig of sea weed!

I went to Margaret's tpoday, my first time. A bit cold and muddy but oh! the health of some of those snowdrop clumps! I learned what you meant by the scrum in the shed. Came away with Roulade, Pyramid, and Michael Holcroft. And good soup. These comments are not in any order - probably the soup came first.

I thought the Pyramids pre-dated the New Testament. And my Concise English Dictionary defines "roulade" as "florid passge of runs etc in solo vocal music, usually su :-\ng to one syllable". Like a muezzin calling the faithful to prayer. Maybe Antony Darby could help here.

Plenty of vocal roulades in Handel and Bach, such as the amen runs in Handel's coronation anthem 'Zadok the Priest' (which only superficially resembles that abomination used for the Uefa Champions League).

what a coincidence I have just come to the computer to post info. You're correct about the time.

I wasnt going to post all of this but thought why not

"Hi Mark

It was great to meet you last week and I'm sending you a wee note to say thank you so much for your time at the Galanthus Gala - it was a real eye-opener for me and I'm afraid to say that I'm hooked, so you might have another 'young-ish' person joining the Scottish forum. Give me a couple of years or so to collect a few bulbs !! Mrs McNamara made the journey back in-tact I'm pleased to say, considering the battering she had with all the tube and train connections !

I've been at it cutting the programme to shape, and I have used some of the conversation you had with Kerry tten Kate, you were a star ! - you are so natural and unfazed and the executive producer of the programme loved your contribution, so many thanks.

The programme will go out on Radio 4 on the 7th of March at 2.45pm - it is only a short programme - but I hope you will enjoy listening to it. It's called 'Snowdrop Mania'. It captures the passion of the galanthophile and also has some history in it."

Enjoyed re-living the Gala today listening to the programme on Radio 4.  I thought it came over well with a 'sympathetic balance' and with Joe, Mark, John, Wol and Rob all sounding relaxed.  Wonder if it will be available as a podcast?  Hope some others managed to catch it.

I've just listened to the programme. Good to hear some familiar voices and some voices of familiar people. Rob was interviewed as the obviously too young to be a snowdrop enthusiast person at the gala and came across very well. Not named but I feel sure I heard Bob Gordon talking of his purchases - 'Peter Gatehouse' and 'Sickle' and I shall now telephone him to chide him for spending his money when he could have had them from me.

The programme ended on rather a down note  with Joe Sharman telling of snowdrop thefts from gardens and how he does not open his garden to the public, keeps his location secret, leaves someone to guard the snowdrops when he is away etc. Such a pity people are do such things.

Just listened to it. You did well Mark and your accent is one to be proud of and is much "softer" then the Belfast accents I was used to hearing when my son lived and worked there. Rob came across very well too agai with a regional accent but one he should be proud of too.

Anyone heard any rumours about where next year's gala might be? I'm hoping somewhere a bit closer to home for me after two successive years on the other side of the country. Was thinking if it was close enough, I might take some of my better seedlings as a display table (in addition to selling my book again) to see what people think of them in the flesh. Don't fancy taking them on a very long car journey though.

Been east two years in a row. East just north of London last two times wasn't too difficult, but if it moves up north-east that's incredibly awkward from here.   :-\
