Lovely Griffinia pictures, all of them.
Here is one of a Griffinia Hybrid, unfortunately it opens not all flowers at the same time. The flowers are lasting longer as I thought, is it so for species also?
-
Renate
how much lasts the flowers of your Griffinia?
today in flower G.liboniana
-
I do so enjoy all your pictures of Griffinia :) This is a genus I'm not very familiar with, I only know that it is the closest relative to Worsleya and this is certainly borne out by the colour of the flowers. I have one little plant of Griffinia esperitensis that's not very happy at the best of times and never flowers - perhaps my climate's too warm for it to thrive?
-
Rogan ,
I do not believe that the heat is a problem !
My suggestion for this bulbs is :
shade , a mix with bark, scoria,sphagnum
they need a high humidity - so place around on a saucer with water !
If you can grow succsessfull Hipp. calytratum so you should have not a problem with Griffinia ...
Good luck
Hans

Hans, Renate and Alessandro,
Wonderful pics. I'm only just catching up on the forums after a 10 day absence (will take me weeks with the amount of postings everyone has done in the last 10 days!! :o :o). I just love the Griffinia liboniana, the flower colour looks wonderful and I just love the leaf shape. Such an unusual genus by the look of it.
Thanks again for the pictures.

today in flower, Griffinia rochae
-
Who wants to try to grow a Griffinia aracensis from seed?
-
Paolo... what pretty seeds they are.... they look like these cowrie shells.....
-
I'll try the seeds if they are still available?
Are they related to Nerines?
-
Mark ,
they are also Amaryllidaceae ....but it is a very different family ( and Nerine is from South Africa and Griffinia from Brasil )
Nerine are Amaryllideae (relatet with Boophone ,Amaryllis,Crinum .....)
Griffinia are Griffinae ( relatet with Worsleya + Griffinia )
the sowing method is different -I would suggest you the same method as I have written today for Scadoxus.
Griffinia seedlings grows slow - I have sown G.aracensis before 3 years ....still small plants !
Good luck !
-
Hans, what sort of habitat do they (Griffinia) grow in in Brazil? I am very taken by them and, like Mark, thought they looked a bit like Nerines (which I also love) so you account was very interesting as to the difference of the two and the photos are lovely.

Really interesting, thanks so much for the link Hans - it's great to know that plants like these are being perpetuated in such good hands :)
-
Now here also flowers on my
Griffinia rochae
Hans 8)
-
I just love the way Griffinia are so generous in flower and leaf pointing in every direction - Griffinia rochae is a lovely colour, Hans :)
-
Thank you Robin :D
Yes Grifinias are really nice ...the problem is that they are so rare ( :'( )
there are really only few sellers ....and this plants are pretty expensiv :o
no wonder ....I have it until today never manged to get seeds ...
The multiplication with offsets is OK ....but it needs time
But I fear you will have problems with this plants in your rock garden ;D

Hi Hans
Lovely plant 8), you must be so pleased to get it to flower. Had a hard day in the garden cutting back plants and just giving everything a tidy up. So to sit down with a coffee and see your lovely photo of your Grifinias makes a nice end to a day in the garden.
Angie :)
-
Hans nice,
how much long are the leaves? I want to confront with my plant
Alessandro

Hi Angie ,

Hi Angie ,
thank you !
Maybe if you are ready in your garden so please come and help me !
Hi Alessandro ,
the leaves are from the base to the leaf point 22 cm !
I was uncertain if my G. rochae, or authentic, this relieve to me
-
The flower of the G.rochae is much darker than my other Griffinias !
-
Hans
thanks for the information
-
Hans,

-
Hi Griffinia fans :D

Griffinia rochae
Hans 8)
-
Beautiful, Hans.
-
One of those blue beauties is flowering for me.
I don't have a species name for it but I'm quite happy it has already made two flower spikes. :D
-
Congratulations, Hans, it is really beautiful
-
Thomas, why is yours flowering in July while Hans' flowered in November? I see that there are some differences to the flower, so perhaps another species, but a big difference in flowering time ???
I don't know very much at all about these lovely plants. :-\
-
I can't tell whether Griffinia is flowering in certain months, reacting on some kind of care or simply free flowering whenever it feels like. ;)
My plant is kept warm and shaded the whole year but doesn't get any special treatment besides. It grows slowly but steadily without any offsets so far.
-
or simply free flowering whenever it feels like
:D ;D That may be the answer, Thomas!
-
Hans, is Thomas B's flower also Griffinia rochae ?
-
Maggi ,
it is impossibly to say without seeing the leaves -maybe Thoams B can compere it with my other Griffinia's
My Griff. rochae is flowering also in this days - like ThoamsB says they flower when they feels like ....
My flower from last year ( November ) is more or less unusual....
Hans
-
My Griffinia looks quite similar to Hans' plant og G. rochae but the younger leaves show some light dots (not as pronounced as in G. liboniana).
The plant Alessandro showed in reply 13 as G. rochae has different leaves though. ???
-
ThomasB
the problem is that also exist hybrids of Griffinia ....
Hans
-
Hans
Very very nice :o

Griffinia rochae in flower
-
Very nice colour...beautiful flower!
-
Originally asked about cultivation of this plant under 'cultivation' as it did not want to flower for me despite growing well and producing many new offsets. http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6448.0
Well the wait is over and it has flowered and been identified by Hans J off the forum and a second confirmed ID by Alan Meerow in the States as Griffinia espiritensis Ravenna.
-
Very nice indeed
-
Very beautiful :)
-
My first griffinia flower today : G. liboniana, after one year cultivation, seems to be quite easy to grow.
-
A blue little jewel !
-
Beautiful, Fred.
