Title: Pancratium maritimum - Black Sea Coast - Bulgaria
Post by: Hristo on July 23, 2009, 10:57:26 AM
Off on a seed hunting/collecting jaunt we were lucky to see a population of several thouasnd plants of Pancratium maratimum.
This may well be the most northerly population on the Black Sea coast!?

Hi Renate,
Sorry for the late reply, yes it is far north and I've been wondering if it might not infact be the most northerly population, worldwide?
At 30km south of Burgas anyone know of a more northerly population?

Fabulous plant, interesting puzzle!

Quote from Flora Europaea: "South Europe, extending northwards to 47o 30' in West France"  -  that's the south coast of Brittany.

I've grown it many years (from seed collected on west coast of Mallorca) and although I have flowering size plants, I have never seen a flower.  I assumes it needs a warmer summer than we get (that wouldn't take much at the moment  ;D )

Cheers Diane,
The Burgas population is around 42o 30', so the Brittany population is a good deal more northerly, I guess thanks to the North Atlantic Drift?

Obviously frost free in coastal Brittany, I'm just surprised the summers are warm enough.

Taking photos today on the sides of the main coastal road,
P. maritimum is particularly abundant this year.

I wonder if this form would flower more reliably than the one I got from PC in a bulb house?

Just found this thread. Anthony I have tried these in the past but they always failed after a year or two

I have a large pot with several bulbs, but only ever get leaves.

I bought some from PC back in 2004. I think they were seriously less than flowering size, judging from the leaf size of the wild plants compared to mine- but they are still alive and I am being less cruel to them now I understand how they grow here.
