Title: Daphne problem
Post by: sippa on July 17, 2009, 04:36:26 PM

What to do with a large Daphne that has flopped open and now has a hole in the middle.  It is a 'Carol Mackie'.  Is there some way I can prune it or tie it together?

Marianne, we had a very large Daphne tangutica do this some years ago when a heavy weight of snow broke open the bush, splitting some branches. We spliced up the breaks  with soft string and propped up the branches with bricks.... it was fine  8)
Has to be worth a try with your one.

Insert a few strong canes or small stakes close to the plant and  tie it up with with garden twine, then next spring when it starts into growth prune it to about two feet(60cm).

Cheers.

Thanks Michael and Maggie for your advise, it is a very healthy shrub so I will have a go at propping it up.
