Howdy All,
This is just a weird pic that I can't find a better place for. If there is a better topic for this, please could the moderators move it there and delete this topic.....
We discovered a massive lemon hiding amongst the foliage of our lemon tree today. At least 50% larger than any lemons we ever get on our tree. My hand span from tip to tip is around 9 inches, just to give you a size reference.
As we were looking at it we discovered this "face" on the bottom of it. I couldn't resist photographing it to show you all. I couldn't find a better topic to post them, so I figured that the subject above said it all. ;D
-
What a face! Looks like he just sucked a lemon......... ;) ;D
-
Egads, maybe that's it.... he just got sucked INTO a lemon. :o
-
EEEEK!
[attach=1] Have you checked if all the neighbours are still around?
-
;D ;D ;D
-
Hmmm,
reincarnation??
-
Should be full of zest if he has been reincarnated ... perhaps it's Jack? :D
-
Cliff,
You're not taking the pith are you? ;)
-
Great item, trouble is I can almost taste the lemon meringue pie already. With a lemon that big you'd only need one.
-
Actually, it really is a pretty skanky lemon. :-[ Quite soft, so I think it is actually half empty because it didn't form right. It definitely isn't packed with juice, that is for sure. :'(
-

Lemon meringue pie? Who on earth eats lemon meringue pie?
I suggest either lemon curd, cooked very very slowly in a double-boiler top over hot water, or a lemon pie made in the mode of the famous Key lime pie.
Lemon curd
1/4 lb butter
1˝ cups sugar
zest of two lemons
juice of three lemons
6 eggs, slightly beaten
Put in double boiler top over hot water (n.b. *hot*, not *boiling*), and stir continuously until thick. Store in covered container in the refrigerator. The more slowly you cook this, the smoother it is. It once took 45 minutes to properly thicken, but the texture was one of absolute uniformity. Use to fill tart shells made of sweetened pastry or however you want.
Lemon pie
melted butter, quant. suff.
graham cracker crumbs
1 can sweetened, condensed milk
2 egg yolks, beaten slightly
juice of 2 lemons
Coat pie pan with melted butter, sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs to build crust. Mix condensed milk, beaten egg yolks, and lemon juice and mix well. Pour into pie shell and chill well. Note use of uncooked egg yolks if you are touchy about such things.
See, now don't those recipes sound like a better fate for the Monster Lemon? Perfect foods for eating while sitting out by the rock garden and admiring the flowers on Veriolitsis glomulama.
-
I do wish you wouldn't post recipes. You KNOW they all go round my backside. >:(
I make a super lemon curd, an old Scottish recipe, and it is a wonderful basis for the genuine Neenish Tart, not the sickly version sometime produced in the supermarket.
-

I do, and in quantity ;D
What's 'Neenish Tart' Lesley please?

Rodger, we Brits eat large quantities of Lemon merinque pie, and lemon curd and.... and.... and ;D
I must say I had thought of a lovely jug of fresh lemonade from the monster...... it is warm here, for a change!
-
I must state again.... the lemon isn't worth consuming I don't think. Much more interesting as a curiosity at this point. Have also got (normal I think) both blood oranges and lemonades ripening at the moment, although the lemonade tree is still quite small and only has a couple of fruit on it.

Oh, shush, Paul, don't spoil our happy dreams about what to do with this mega-lemon! :P ;D
Not that I am surprised that a huge fruit like that is likely not to be very tasty.... I was given a gift of a huge prize-winning leek once.... it was horrible, no decent flavour at all :-X
-
Maggi,
I am happy to donate it to the SRGC if you'd like to raffle it off to one of the forumers, or give it as a door prize or something? ;D
-
So that's where 'he who must not be named' ended up? ::) :o
-
David, Neenish Tarts are little tarts (about 4 bites max). A short (sweet) pastry case with a lemon filling, and one half of the top smeared over with a chocolate icing so that they are half choc and half lemon. Very scrumptious. A little bit tricky or fiddly to make but well worth the time and effort. The recipe has been requested. Coming to a site near you (this one) later in the day.
-
Anthony,
It does look a bit like the big V doesn't it. Maybe I should try selling it on Ebay as Harry Potter memorabilia? ;D Heck, if you can buy a piece of toast that has the imprint of the virgin mary in the butter, what price Voldermort in a lemon? ;)

I do if someone make some ;D ;D ;D
Cheers

-
I agree, especially if the meringue is made properly and the pie is hot. :)
-
...and the pastry is crispy with whispers of meringue golden on top and a shot of lemon, sweet and sour MMMMMMmmmmmmmm :P :P
-
Will you please stop writing like this... if Maggi happens to read this I don't think she'll be able to stand this and we might find ourselves looking for another moderator ::) ::) ::) ;D ;)

It's OK if the 'C' word is not mentioned. ;D
-
Anthony,
But Cliff just mentioned the C word..... now there'll be trouble! :o
I must provide an updated pic of the lemon that started this whole thing..... it's gaining more character as it matures. ;D
-
Don't worry, Folks, I have taken my equivalent of a [attach=1]
so, all is well........ [attach=2]

I was going to put my Neenish Tart recipe here but on reflection, I think I'll start a new thread called "Cooks' Corner."
-
We've just had friends round to watch the Andy Murray match and had Delia's 'simple stroganof' as our main course. We started with an aperitif - the 'philosopher's grog', a recipe used by Charles Darwin on the Beagle. The meal started with prosciutto and melon and finished with Perthshire strawberries and cream. Yum yum.
-
Who would have thought that my strange lemon would have generated into a cooking topic. :o
-
I think the poor thing needs lemon aid? :-\
-
<groan> ::)
;D

mmmm I watched the Andy Murray match too, but limited myself to some strawberries and cream... ;D after all this is Wimbledon isn't it ?? 8)

Any guesses? ...and a packet of seed to the first correct answer (just remember I'm in Africa and can't send you anything hardy!) ;D

A kamikaze Butterfly??? ;D

Fermi,
I was trying to work out whether there was any way it could be a leaf insect?
I'm assuming it is part of a leaf and we're supposed to work out what it is a leaf of?
-
It certianly looks like a pair of butterfly wings having an out-of-body experience :)
-
Looks like a shell from a shellfish to me, partially fossilized
-
It DOES look a shell doesn't it? You can see the little bit where it would join to the other half. Maybe a scallop?
-
Because this isn't a moan and I certainly wasn't so happy about it, perhaps this is the right place for a small event that happened yesterday.
I dropped a small, full bottle of very hot tabasco sauce and the top broke and spilled a few drops on the kitchen floor. I found half the top but couldn't see the other half before the intrepid Teddy found it and, as he does, had a good chew. He leapt in the air, yelped and rushed around like a dervish but after a few minutes had the gumption to stick most of his face and mouth in the water bowl at the back door, fortunately open. But for a little while there, we had a very hot dog? Though I felt for him, it was really hilariously funny.
-
It looks like a cocoa pod suspended or partially fossilised in the solidified rock ... but, then again, I am under the influence of altitude and an abundance of white wine here in the glorious Dolomites! ;D ;D ;D
-
What more could one wish for Cliff, hope the weather has improved ;)
-
Just a bit of an update on Voldermort the lemon....
As he aged he became even more comical. He ended up looking like this, without any machinations by us at all. He really did end up with an evil grin.
-
Could make a good icon to add to the emotions Paul for acid wit! :o
-
Or if you're feeling a bit sour about something. :P
-
;D ;D 8)
...as in sourpuss ??

It's got to be Gordon Brown!!
-
Can't be. He's smiling!
-
Hi Paul
Not in the same class as 'Voldermort the lemon' - but as you have started the thread I have at last found somewhere to place my potato!
Esther Rantzen would be proud of us. ;)
-
Couldn't you show us the back side, John? :D
-
Not Voldemort, but perhaps Bumbledor? ::)
-
you guys are completely nuts!! ::)
-
Enough already, Paul. ::)
-
Not sure is this picture is good enough - a poor scan of my son (some years ago now) with a Pink Fir Apple potato with all the bits (well most):
-
Have to watch out when we lift our pink fir apples :o
-
Well there's no answer to that Carol! ;D
-
Was that as rude as I think it was? :-X
Not a pink fir apple - but an apple anyway. One of my colleagues is on holiday and I spotted this on their desk yesterday.
-
I think it has swine 'flu? :P
-
I anyone going to try to see this tonight? That is if the skies are clear...

Yes, we're keeping our fingers crossed for clear skies, too.
-
To us "down under" the Perseid radiant just skims the northern horizon in the pre-dawn hours - no good for meteor watching, sigh! :(
-
I wanted to.... but there is so much cloud cover I don't hold up much hope. :-\
-
I think it has swine 'flu? :P
Or ringworm :)
-
no shower here last night because there were different showers
-
I parked myself outside the back door, where I have a great view of Cassiopeia, with Perseus below. So far 12 shooting stars! 8)
-
Incredibly clear sky full of stars here and I've seen a couple shooting right across the sky - amazing to think people all round the world are star-gazing tonight ::)
-
Heavily clouded sky the last two nights so no star-gazing. Besides, heavy rain as well and the ground is sodden, not suitable for lying on one's back. :D
-

Having read Wyndham's "The Day of theTriffids" when quite young (and impressionable?) I avoid looking at meteor showers ;D
But I still "wish upon falling stars"!
cheers

I gave up at 11.45 p.m. because it was too cold (10oCelsius) to sit out in my shorts and T-shirt.

You should have put on your lovely cap Anthony... ;D ;)

Never thought of that! ::)
-
Have just got around to looking at bulb log 15,16,17 and what fantastic photo's and plants and garden an o so depressing,
When I look at my Erythronium's and Ian's I really have to ask myself why do I bother?Maybe Otto or Paul can grow them like that
but I certainly can't. bye Ray

It's amazing what you can lose down the back of a sofa!
Hi All
a friend sent this to me - it took me a few minutes to work out why he had sent me a picture of a sofa!.... ;)
-
Oh, that is SOOOOOOO funny! Love it ..... good to know the troops are training for all circumstances! ;)
-
Probably S.A.S. ... Sofa Armed Security on an under cover mission ... couched in secrecy ... foam at the ready ... armed to the hilt ...

Now sette down! ;D

Any more and I'll pull my hair out!
-
That would surely knock the stuffing out of you, Anthony ... sofa, so good! Stay suite! :D
-
Suite dreams ;D
-
In the grey of this morning I thought I saw a tree flying through the air
-
...no, I wasn't 'seeing' things!
-
That tree has suffered a chopper at both ends, Robin! :D
-
;D ;D ;D - it's amazing what they do by helicopter in the Alps :o
-
Maybe the helicopter service is just branching out into other things. ;D
A bit early for Christmas isn't it? (and wrong sort of tree by the look of it). Although I could be barking up the wrong tree. ::)
:P
-
::) Paul, maybe it's a family tree just looking for its roots :o
-
::) Paul, maybe it's a family tree just looking for its roots :o

Without doubt, Cliff :(
It was never worth a free helicopter ride if you're cut off in your prime :'(
-
Strange, but true ...
This morning our mug tree threw itself to the floor (propelled by the spin motion of the washing machine beneath) and the two mugs that it carried were broken ...
The supposedly 'unbreakable' mug is illustrated first.
-
A handle without its mug and a mug without its handle. Can they not get together for a close friendship?
Honeymoon by helicopter, somewhere in the Alps perhaps (taking their tree with them)?
-
I had an endoscopy early this morning. Put me right off bananas for months to come. :-X
-
I hope everything is fine with you Lesley
-
Yes thanks Kees, everything's fine and all healed nicely, internally. The reference to bananas is from the numbing local anaesthetic spray used at the back of my throat. It tasted of very over-ripe bananas. Utterly horrible! ???
-
Well, I'm glad you explained that, Lesley! Also glad that you're okay!
cheers
fermi

Here, here, glad you're OK Lesley - have you heard in the SH of the new robotic pill you will be able to swallow in the future that has legs and can creep about your insides with a camera giving information - creepy..... but maybe better that over-ripe bananas and swallowing a tube :o ???
-
Well, I'm glad you explained that, Lesley! Also glad that you're okay!
cheers
fermi
Quite!Frankly, I was afraid to ask ! ::) :-X
-
Good that it is good news, Lesley. Always a relief.
Cliff, that second mug needs to get a grip on itself.
Paddy
-
Cliff, that second mug needs to get a grip on itself.
It just needs to handle itself better, Paddy! ;)
Super news, Lesley ... you can certainly book your International Conference 2011 tickets now... :D
-
Thanks everyone for your support. No, Robin, I hadn't heard of that robotic thing. What if it decided "it's nice and warm in here, think I'll stay on?" ???
-
I'm rather curious as to the route this vehicle takes? ::) We didn't come across any subways? :-\
-
I had an endoscopy early this morning. Put me right off bananas for months to come. :-X
Hi Lesley
I can sympathise with you as I have gone through this on two occasions.
It is not very pleasant.
Eric
-
I wonder why the server has not moved on to wintertime, does it not apply in Scotland?

I'm still trying to find a connection between endoscopy and bananas, and then it hit me. They are the perfect shape. I am seeing Lesley in a new light! :P
-
I wonder why the server has not moved on to wintertime, does it not apply in Scotland?
I hadn't noticed until now, Tony. No idea why it hasn't changed.... have asked Fred!
Fred replies: The www is international, they have to change it in their profile.......... so I've changed my clock, to show -1 hours from the forum default. I just clicked on an "auto-detect" button.....and you will see that the time showing for my edit, see below, is indeed the correct time, according to my other clocks!!
(Now I'll sneak off and change Tony's clock!" ;))
-
My Forum posts always come up with the wrong time when we are on summer time but then I think they do when we are not, also. ???
For instance, this one has come up as 11.53 am whereas it is actually 12.53 pm (or, was, a couple of minutes ago. :)) I mean, 7 mins to 1 in the afternoon. I'm getting a bit confused here. What's new? ???
-
Lesley, your time was plus 11 so I changed it to plus 12, which should be the right time for you now, eh?
-
Well it seems now to be right on my screen Maggi, but as we are now in summer time and if you are in winter time, we are 13 hours ahead. :-\
-
Anthony, I don't think the camera on the end of the tube was banana-shaped, but the numbing spray which was squirted into the back of my throat tasted like rotten bananas. The clinician was a little too enthusiastic with its application and I gagged.
-
Well it seems now to be right on my screen Maggi, but as we are now in summer time and if you are in winter time, we are 13 hours ahead. :-\
Well, I'm confused.... nothing new there then.
I have made another change ,to make you 13 hours ahead.... so, I'm writng this at 36 minutes past midnight... so you should be showing as nearly twenty to two in the afternoon, right?
-
I went off to have some lunch Maggi. It's 18 or 19 mins past 2pm here now. (But showing 3.18 on the post!)
-
It's showing here on your post as 2:18, not 3:18, Lesley. So I'm assuming that means that we're 11 hours ahead of them now, as I think we're 2 hours behind you aren't we? I think we vary between 10 and 12 hours with the UK, but now I'm not sure. Or is it 9 and 11? ??? All this coming and going through time.... I'm positively exhausted!! :o ::)
-
I give up.

At 12.11 here in the UK on Monday 26 October, it was:
Dunedin- 01.11 on Tuesday 27th.
Canberra-23.11 on Monday 26th.
Or does that complicate things further??

That sounds right David, provided you put in the a's and p's. At 12.11 mins past mid-day in the UK on the 26th, it was 23.11pm in Canberra and 1.11 am in NZ on the 27th. As I've said before, you'll never catch up with us. ;D
John I think it must be 12 and a half earlier (or later) in Newfoundland. :-\ I think we're about 18 ahead of Los Angeles.
When it's night-time in Italy, it's Wednesday over here, as the war-time song said.
