Title: ID on mysterious plant
Post by: Ulf Eliasson on June 22, 2009, 09:15:10 AM: Please, can someone tell me what this is. I guess some kind of Caryophyllaceae.

Post by: Lesley Cox on June 22, 2009, 10:32:43 PM: I think it's what I had as Arenaria rosaeflora. I didn't have it long either though I think that was my fault. It set Silene-like seed quite well. (Or Arenaria-like I suppose.)

Post by: Lesley Cox on June 22, 2009, 10:37:03 PM: It seems to be what Magnar and I think, spelt as Magnar does, in the specific name i.e. Arenaria roseiflora. It comes from Yunnan in china.

Post by: Ulf Eliasson on June 25, 2009, 08:04:56 AM: I'm afraid that Arenaria roseiflora is not correct for this plant. That species have violet anthers and shallowly cleft petal apex.
Arenaria euodonta and Arenaria rockii seems similar, but descriptions doesn't fit exactly.

Today I know that this plant was collected by The Botanical Garden i Gothenburg, in China at Bei Ma Shan. It fits an herbarium specimen in China labelled Arenaria euodonta, however Flora of China have a different description. I don't know if the herbaria or the flora is wrong. The type specimen should be in Edinburgh, but it is unlikely that someone will check this out. Thank you all for your effort to help.

Post by: Lesley Cox on June 26, 2009, 09:58:59 AM: I must admit I never particularly noticed the colour of anthers etc and it was a long time ago. Perhaps the plants I had were wrongly named and should have been A. euodonta. ???

Post by: Ulf Eliasson on June 26, 2009, 02:25:13 PM: Well, it seems to be a matter of opinion among botanists. Flora of China reconize both names as separate species... the Herbarium of Edinburgh unites them under A. roseiflora, so your suggestion might not be so bad after all.
