Title: Geranium ID?

Howdy All,

At my friend's garden he had this Geranium seeding about.  Nice shade of green leaves, and striking flowers.  The flowers are only quite small though, probably less than 2.5cm across.  I have a small plant of it which I hope to grow on through winter in protection as I am guessing it will die off with the cold?  The main plants were maybe a metre wide?

Anyone know what it is?  Seeds freely and true to colour/form etc.

no, lucky it flowers! This Geranium can set seed without flowering

Oh!  :o  What are it's frost/cold tolerances?  Is it a summer annual that dies off in winter?

Please do not mind if I ask some information about a Pelargonium I have... It's Pelargonium iocastrum and I've read that usualy it's grown as an annual, but it could be also held for some years.
Could someone give me more info about its culture?

Hi Mad,
not sure if I can advise you much about growing this pelargonium where you are. I grew it from seed from South Africa (Silverhills Seeds) and it is moderately perennial here - not lasting forever but seeding around freely, so I doubt I'll ever be without it.
It survives our frosts, down to -7^oC in a raised garden bed and in pots, so I presume it requires good drainage and plenty of sun. It gets by with a little water over the summer but I doubt that it's truly xeric.

Hi, Fermi, it helps a lot, indeed! Thank you so much. At the moment mine is in a pot, so I will put him in a bed and hope to see him again next year (it's rare having less than -7°C here). And I will try to collect seeds, just in case  :P

I have just posted photos of my long-awaited plants, flowering minus any
petals, just as Mark said they often do.
