This weekend there was a Peony Show again.
Last year I showed a lot of pictures of this beautiful show held on the grounds of the castle.
This year the show was inside the castle, where some rooms and the stairs were allowed to use for arranging the flowers.
To see some pictures of the castle too, here is the link from last year's show:
http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1846.0 (http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1846.0)
I visited the show on Thursday. Thursday and Friday are special days for professional gardeners
and Saturday and Sunday are public days with several other attractions on the castle grounds and there
are guided tours through the castle.
In the first batch two pictures of a colorful arrangement to attract people when arriving at
the grounds.
And some arrangements and flowers.
Paeonia Pink Dawn

second batch:

Luit,
What a brilliant setting for a flower show. The setting alone would be worth visiting and the paeonies are outstanding.
Many thanks for your report and photographs. Stunning!

Beautiful Luit, thanks for posting them.
-
Stunning displays Luit !
Thanks for showing us around.

The flower arrangements really bring the castle alive. Paeony flowers are ideal for their rich glamour to match the rich surroundings of the castle. A great pleasure to see this display, Luit, thank you!
-
Luit an other great report thanks a lot I enjoyed it a lot and will also show my mother-in-law that have not seen such splendors before.
Thanks a lot

Stunning, Luit. 'Red Charm' I have seen in person and I think it is probably my favourite herbaceous type. So much like a waratah flower. The display's you've shown are amazing, although I would perhaps not have put fluffy pink flamingos into my display in my own garden. ;)

Thank you all for your nice comments.
To imagine what an enormous performance this is, I should have told you, that this show every year is organized by one single company: Compass Plants, which is a Dutch intermediary for perennials.
-
My goodness! That is a great effort from a single company. Even more impressive, then.
As I walk around our own garden or out with Lily the dog, I see a few paeonies here and there and think of this huge display.....I am so grateful that you share these visits with us all, Luit.
-
Stunning flowers, and so artistically presented. Thank you, Luit.

Luit - An incredible show. Do you recall the name of the luscious one in bud under the barometer?

Probably America.

Luit,
Thanks a lot for those wonderful photos. The show is just tremendous and I liked the arrangements so much! The interspecific paeony hybrid 'Red Charm' is georgeous! In my country and neighbouring CIS countries it is one of the most selling cultivars.
-
I looking up the forums and found this! NOw I have to found place for more peony ::)
-
Luit,
what fanatastic, colourful plant species.
It is just pity I don't have enough space in the garden... :'(
-
I've been to Keukenhof Gardens three times and had no idea there was this feast of paeonies across the road (though presumably not at the same time as I was looking at tulips and narcissi).
Can anyone point me to any really good growing displays of paeonies in the UK? Does the new Kelways have a display garden, for example?
-
........... Does the new Kelways have a display garden, for example?
Not as such Steve. They do have a field in which are planted a lot of the old Peony varieties and this is open to the public. See http://www.kelways.co.uk/useful_information/peony_valley/6/
I went in 2008 and was very disappointed as the weed growth in the field topped some of the Peonies and many of the varieties were not named. Additionally many of the Irises in the Plant centre were not worth buying. I did write to Kelways and complained and said they would not dare to sell mail order the quality of plants in stock in the plant centre >:( This year the field was a little better but not much, and the plants in the plant centre were just as bad!

Well, that's surprising and disappointing especially for such an illustrious name nursery. I thought they were still exhibiting at the big shows and winning medals - maybe I'm out of date.
I'd better stop being lazy and get the RHS Plantfinder out and see if there are any other major UK growers who have paeonia displays in season.
Talking about displays in season, Ayletts in Hertfordshire has a peerless display of Dahlias at this time of year. The display field is about two miles from the Ayletts garden centre - see www.aylettnurseries.co.uk/ for details. Their annual dahlia festival is coming up; 11-20 September. No connection disclaimer, they're just a class grower.

I'm sure they are Steve but it's not going to be with the standard oif plant they were selling in the Plant Centre. I have to say that I have never ordered from Kelways so I can not speak for the quality of the plants they send out by mail order.
