Title: Western Ghats
Post by: Mick McLoughlin on March 26, 2007, 10:11:18 PM: Just got back from 2weeks in Goa. Spent a couple of days up in the mountains, Western Ghats. Got a few photos of local flowers if anyone is interesred or can identify for me.
First a general view of the area.
Then an orchid on the high point. Is there enough to identify as I know nothing about orchids.

Some sort of Dendrobium for you orchid, I would think. Someone will know.

Where my family live is definitely tropical not much good for rock gardening, though some cousins did have pots of rain-lilies in bloom once when we visited many years ago. Apparently someone in India was one of the early breeders of rain-lily ( Zepheranthes, Habranthus and Cooperia) hybrids according to Thad Howard who wrote a great book on
Bulbs for Warm Climates".

The answer is Portugal. 8)
Fermis last name and my mother-in-laws name is the same and I asked if he had Portoguese origen.
He had his roots in Goa that used to be Portuguese and hence a Portuguese name.
That is the reason I knew about Fermis background.

Tempted to make feeble jest about Fermi contacting his far-flung relatives by sousa-phone .... ::)
