It's always (well nearly!) deathly silence on the AGS On-Line Discussion ;)
-
Perhaps everyone who went is having a long weekend and will post midweek? ::)
Or perhaps they've all had the problem Ian has had in Sweden...... his camera broke down at Peter Korn's yesterday. He hoped it was only a temporary blip, but who knows? With luck some of the rest of the gang have got plenty pix to share.....though there are less than a dozen on this Gothenburg trip ..... I would have hoped for a bigger turnout in Dorset?!! ??? By the way - where is Dorset? ;D
-
Head due South and when you hit the sea turn right :P
-
Head due South and when you hit the sea turn right :P
Stonehaven ...... Dorset is in Stonehaven?? Crikey, who knew? I really must get out more....... :P

Yep, you must ;D
You need to head due south a long long way until you hit the sea.
Then turn left, not right, (Aberdeen is west of Wimbourne)
-
Thanks, Diane. I quite like the idea of Aberdeen being the wild west...... ::) ;D

I for one hope to see lots of pix from Peter Korns garden - I'm anxious to see what he's been up to and how many tonnes of soil and rocks he has moved since we visited last year ;D
Didn't make it to Wimbourne myself.. to far out for a hop.. ::)
-
Ian says today his camera is still kaput. :'( He has got photos from the Gothenburg Botanic Garden and a few from Peter's but we need not worry..... Peter Maguire's camera has been working overtime so we can pester him for lots of pix when he gets back!! ;D ;)
-
What a relief !!! :D :D :D

Tomorrow there is the AGS show at Pershore..... 11th July......Must confess that I get so wrapped up in the Tour of France Cycling in July that the idea of shows drifts off my radar somewhat! :-[
Hope all you folks going or showing, Have a great day !!
From the AGS site:
Saturday, 11 July, 2009 - 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm
at PERSHORE COLLEGE, AVON BANK, PERSHORE, WR10 3JP
M5 Jn7 for Pershore; drive through Pershore; college is on right just out of town.
-
It seems that a Farrer medal was not awarded at Pershore, but Ivan Pinnick from the Isle of Wight won
"best in show" for Campanula raineri 'Gothenburg Form' ...... any more news from Pershore?????
-
Forgot to take my camera but there were loads of other Forumists there including one who, I was very surprised to find, was not sporting a tie :P
I was also very surprised to find that nearly all of those Forumists seemed to disappear the nearer it got to lunch time ???
-
was not sporting a tie
Ye gods, really? How standards are slipping..... I do hope it is not an invidious influence gained from European travels....... ::) Did you not find, however, that this person, while NOT wearing a tie, managed to look as if he were ?
That is to say, he appeared casually dressed, yet still very smart? ;)
As to the thinning of the ranks towards lunchtime ( if you will pardon the obviously inappropriate choice of words) ......that is something which I suspect is liable to happen anywhere Forumists are gathered..... some of them are quite obsessed with food, y'know! :o
Wasn't Pershore rather a long trip for you, David..... it wasn't a Wednesday, either ? :-\
-
"Dapper" is a good term Maggi, it describes him very well.
Fitted in around a visit to Mum-in-Law the timing of which was pre-arranged to suit.
-

I'm really sorry about two things:
1. Not to meet David N who did not make himself known (to me anyway) and
2. Not to have time to take any pictures (morning staging, then lunch, afternoon meeting).
The only "news" I can share, is that if there had been a Pershore pig competition, it would have been won fairly and squarely by a certain forumist who shall be nameless on the grounds of not wishing to embarass. This person polished off a solid meal of steak and chips, with pud and custard after, still found room for cake in the afternoon, followed by evening bunfight and scrum chez nous. The recipes for the puds chez nous (Blackcurrant marbled baked cheesecake and Pear and Walnut brownie) will appear, due to popular request, in the Cooks' corner in due course but will not be accompanied by photos as there was not much left.
-
Diane, have you been smoking something? I was there all day and have no recollection of seeing anyone eat all that lot ::)
I did manage to meet David. Good to meet you face to face David. I was quite impressed that you recognised me from my avatar. I obviously haven't changed that much!
I also did manage to get my camera into the hall after being dragged away from the microbrewery before I'd sampled all the beers on offer.
So, on with the show.
First, Lee & Julie Martin's Medal winning large 6 pan.
From the 6 pan entry, Campanula raineri x pulla which would have got my vote for a Farrer Medal
Eucomis schijffii shown by Cecilia Coller
Thymus cilicicus, Lee & Julie Maertin again. How do they do it, how do they fit them all into the car!
Astilbe crispa Perkeo, Harry Roberts
Campanula fragilis, Eddie Spencer
Campanula fragilis, Paul & Jill Ransom
Campanula raineri Gothenburg form, voted best in show and shown by Ivan Pinnick who had travelled all the way from the Isle of Wight
Another view of the best plant in the show
-
The next set starts by swinging from the sublime to the...almost ridiculous
Here we have Gypsophila aretoides caucasica with a single flower right in the middle of a large 30 cm cushion. Due to lack of competition this floriferous wonder got me a red sticker with its worst flowering performance in several years 8)
Next Eucomis autumnalis ssp amaryllidifolia shown by Bob & Rranveig Wallis in close up and then the whole plant
Androcymbium striatum, earning George Elder a cerificate of Merit
Lilium nepalense, Cecilia Coller
Calocephalus brownii, shown by Mavis Allenson
Olearia nummularifolia Little Lou, courtesy of Brian & Shelagh Smethurst
A mini arrangment by Dorothy Semple
-
A good start (I hope) to the pictures from the show. The campanulas looked to be in excellent condition, you have to wonder why a Farrer was not awarded again (not Pudsey or here), are the judges setting too high a standard, do we have to high expectations etc. It is always difficult to judge from pictures as to the 'quality' of the plants when condition etc as so important in making the final decision, what do others think?
-

Ooh, er, Martin.... that does look a little odd.... perhaps you were getting a sympathy vote there? ;D I think I might have been inclined to pinch the flower offf an denter it in a one pan cushion plant, not in flower ..... you could have won there too!!

Yes, George, it is hard to tell everything from a photo, even the good ones we enjoy on the Forum, but it does seem puzzling that none of these very smart looking plants was thought worthy of a Farrer. ???
-
The last batch now.
Small 6 pan, yet another well deserved AGS Medal for Cecilia Coller
Delphinium patens (?) ssp montanum shown by Joy Bishop. Sorry if I've got the species wrong, can't read my own writing
Campanula hercegovina nana which won the 80th anniversary award for Graham Nicholl
Arisaema fargesii, Diane Clement
Arisaema purpureogaleatum, Diane Clement
Last, small but probably the most exciting plant in the show was this Rhodohypoxis seedling ex R milloides shown by Colin Dolding. The flower form, size and colour were just stunning an dvery unusual. The photo does not do justice to the depth of the colour or velvet texture. It needed an armed guard to prevent many covetous exhibitors stealing it. I hope it multiplies well.
That's all. I'm off to charge the camera batteries for my hols.
-

No Maggi, best in one pan Caryophyllaceae all on its own, one pan cushion was a bit fierce. I couldn't bring myself to pinch it off.
-
Maggi, slightly off topic. How do you get to do a partial quote from a post in grey. I can click the quote button but that gets me the whole post an dif I edit that it doesn't stay grey. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I DO LIKE that Rhodohypoxis seedling.... I expect Colin is well pleased with that! 8)
Martin, I just highlight and copy any partial text I want to paste into the quote markings , from the box second right, above..... How do you get to do a partial quote
But you can, equally easily, highlight and delete any text from a full quote...... six of one.... as they say..... does that help? I've just edited your post to give the quote box.....
Hope the hols go well. :D

Sorry Diane, but didn't bump into anyone I thought might be you. I bumped into Martin R just outside the plant sales tent as I arrived at the Show and he introduced me to John Dower and Brian and Shelagh Smethhurst. Sheila didn't recognise me anyway, I must look older than my avatar ::)
Lovely set of pics Martin.

Click on the quote then delete the bit you don't want, whilst leaving the word quote in square brackets at the beginning and slash quote in square brackets at the end.
voilą

If you press quote on a message, you will see the coding, then press preview to check it's done the right thing.
Clear as mud
-
Thanks Maggi & Diane, the two explanations and a little play without posting have got my brain just about in gear.
-
Sorry Diane, but didn't bump into anyone I thought might be you.
Oh, bother, I didn't have my dark glasses on as in my avatar (nor Dolomites in the background, more's the pity)
Actually, I was probably in a meeting, I didn't actually have time to see the show, although I seemed to find time to relieve Robin White of more plants than I have room for ;)
Another time, I hope, David
Nice pix, Martin, thanks for showing them. I like the Eucomis especially the first one, but I'm not sure whether it ought to be in a tin labelled del Monte. And I just crave the Amdrocymbium - got the seed, won't germinate though.
-
Great report Matin !
What a load of marvelous Campanula !
Thanks for sharing !
-
It was great to meet David at Pershore - I would have missed him though if Martin had not done the honours. Recognising anyone from the thumbnail on the forum is quite a challenge.
Perhaps we should all have badges of our avatar with a SRGCF logo to be worn at AGS shows.
Now there's a frightening thought!
I can also confirm MR is in serious practice for the 2010 Pudsey Pig Comp. - mind you the nosh at Dianes would tempt anybody. :D
JohnnyD

what a good idea :o :o :o
-
Might be a fun idea.... a special Forumists' badge so we can find eachother....at all the shows and on distant mountain tops, or in patisseries, for instance........ 8)
Trouble with badges, though, is, unless they are pretty big, most of us still couldn't make them out.... and peering at folks' chests can be misconstrued. :P ::) :-X..... what about t-shirts with nice big writing....... "I'm an SRGC forumist...what's your problem ?" ;D
-
.. what about t-shirts with nice big writing....... "I'm an SRGC forumist...what's your problem ?" ;D
Would you put me on the list for an XXL one for me please ?? ;D
-
.. what about t-shirts with nice big writing....... "I'm an SRGC forumist...what's your problem ?" ;D
Would you put me on the list for an XXL one for me please ?? ;D
gladly, Luc, but I favour better names for the sizes ..... for instance, S = petit(e) M = everyday
L= robust, XL= in training XXL = post graduate XXXL = superb(e) .... and so on! :D
-
How an SRGC cap? For all weathers - I could see those sporty types watching cricket who could shout out 'Howzat' in a SRGC cap whilst shading the sun from their eyes or 'in, out...in, out .....and shake it all' about whilst watching tennis in a SRGC cap and flapping it to keep cool or .....I'll leave the Rugby and Football fans to add their ideas....as a perfect receptacle for catching tiddlywinks when you're on an outing with kids or...... ::)...or for keeping off the rain drips when looking at flowers in the open rock garden and collecting donations for a good cause ;)
-
That's a good idea, Robin... and perhaps easier to cope with a "one-size fits all "style?
-
Thank you Martin and Maggi for your comments re. the Rhodohypoxis seedling at Pershore. It certainly caused a stir and even had to be taken outside by the judges to see if the intense colour was caused by the strange lighting! Fortunately it looked just as good outside! It seems to be a strong grower and should multiply well. :)
-
It seems to be a strong grower and should multiply well.
;) That's even better news, Colin! ;) ;D
I like the shape of the flower as well as the colour... a very striking combination.
-

-
Hi Maggi. Thank you for posting details of the forthcoming AGS Autumn South Show, you just beat me to it. Lets hope it is well supported by exhibitores, members, channel hoppers and the public.
Like all Show Secretaries you can only put on the shows with the help of many hard working people who are willing to give there time
on show days. I'm very lucky to have a wonderfull team who are willing to put on two shows a year.
Still very dry here in S.E.Kent, my arms are down to my ankles, to many watering cans and buckets.
Best Wishes David.
-
We'll all be hoping your hard working team get a good turnout for your show, David.
Hard to believe that there are some areas of the country still too dry.....in spite of some lovely weather we are getting quite a bit of rain ( getting some right this minute, as it happens!) so need to water has been minimised.... my sympathy to your elongating arms! ;)
-
Maggi,
You may not be suffering from elongating arms, but by now, surely you are becoming webfooted... :P ;)
-
Maggi,

Yes, handy for getting through the puddles.... but not enough for long distance ocean crossings......... ;D ;)
-
;D ;D ;D
-
Joking with Luc about travelling to Australia ( in another thread...oblique reference made here ;) ).... made me think about his Channel Hopping and the internal UK distances to shows...... so here are the distances given by a search engine forthe respective journeys from Lu, in Harelbeke, Belgium to the Rainham AGS show, and for the journey from Aberdeen, for (little old stay-at-home) me!....
For Luc.... Miles: 122.04 Kilometers: 196.40 ( I appreciate this includes the Channel!!)
For me.... Miles: 413.82 Kilometers: 665.96 :o
So, I'll just be there in spirit, David!! :)

We can't wait, Maggi. But before then, see you at the weekend. Will Lily be coming too?
-
Lily is off down the road to my dear friend Linda for the weekend, where Lily will be kept very busy playing and teaching Linda's very young mini Schnauzer puppy how to behave in polite society!
She was there while we were at Stratford for the AGS "do" the other weekend and is besotted with the wee pup!
For the Ponteland show I will have puppy Jak here, and Figo the cocker spaniel!
-
Maggi, sounds as if you starting a dog hotel or is it just B&B - Bones and Bed ;D
