Title: Which camera do you have ?
Post by: Lampwick on April 19, 2009, 05:51:10 PM
Edit by Maggi :I have moved these posts , and merged others, to this new thread, for you to list the cameras you use so anyone seeking advice about a particular camera can find someone to ask about that version!

What camera do you have and why?

Since I have ceased using my 35mm SLR, (Minolta Dynax 3xi) and upgraded – if you can call it that – to a cheap basic digital (Samsung Digimax A5), I do miss the functions of a SLR. Like depth of field preview, shutter/aperture priority, and the various lenses that go with it etc.  ???

So what would some of you folk recommend? I want it mainly for plant photography. Probably a mid range price would suite me. I know they start at about £250 and go up to around £4.000.  :o

Please help!

Hey John,

Follow Maggi's suggestion as we have discussed similar questions in the past. If you still have questions, there are plenty of photographers who will chime in to help...

Mark  Smyth has the  Canon 900 Ti ...
and Brian Ellis uses a Canon  Ixus 700......
if that is any help.... Mark, Brian..... where are you?

I've got a Canon 860 - I got it as a simple snap pocket camera and I haven't used it much.

This may prove an opportune time for all members of the forum to indicate their make and model of camera in case other members need assistance at any time?

I use a Nikon D80 and an ancient Nikon 995.

Nice idea Cliff...I was thinking along the same lines. Camera models can be accumulated and stored somewhere so that if anyone needs specific help, they know who to ask.

I shoot with a Nikon D2X and an iPhone 3GS digitally (amazing how handy it is!), and have a Nikon FM3 and Pentax MZ-S (currently in my son's hands at art school) for film. Almost everything I do is digital these days.

I use a Cannon 450D with a 100mm 2.8 lens for plant pics, and a Sony Cyber-shot 8.1 as a pocket camera.

Being a photographic ignoramus I haven't graduated beyond point and shoot and use a Fuji FinePix S5700. Reasonably easy to use and in the right hands takes a reasonable image!

David, et al,

It's NOT the equipment you use. The most important asset you have as a photographer is between your ears, followed closely by those two blobs in your face that are connected to it by your optic nerves.

Carlo, you've just provided the answer to a question I have posed many times. The eyes are getting past it and the bit in the middle has been addled for years ;D

I use a Nikon D300, but a decent lens is what I need.

I have a Canon 900ti that I cant complain about. The macro setting goes as close as 1cm but there is never any real need for that except to take photos of seeds.

It produces better results than some DSLR photos I have seen

A good idea could be to show an general photo taken with our cameras and a closeup.

Macro - Geranium robertianum 'Celtic White'
General - garden scene

Recently purchased, I love my Canon PowerShot SX1 IS with 20x wide-angle zoom with optical IS for full details you can take a tour on the Canon site.

http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_Camera/PowerShot/PowerShot_SX1_IS/index.asp

It has had rave reviews and we did a lot of comparisons.  I would recommend it to anyone like me who wants zoom and Macro capabilities in an instant plus the quick button to manual mode for your own settings before the insect has gone or light changed on a plant!  It reached right across the valley in the first photo and zoomed in to a detailed homestead...the white CU I think shows a lot of light and shade detail in the flower.  Finally although you can't exactly put it in your pocket it is light when walking and the handgrip is great.  Image stabilizer and HD Video a plus.

Robin that is mighty impressive.  I am looking at the camera specs next!
I have wanted to change to a more powerful (and recent) camera for ages.  I currently use a Nikon Coolpix 995 dating from 2001.  It has done me proud but Pics like yours show me how much better my work could be. :)
Can you advise on battery life?

Tony,
Battery life was one of my main problems but with Varta charger on special offer plus 8 rechargeable batteries I don't worry at all now - they seem to go on for longer too (in spite of no funny bunnies  ;D)

I looked at the powershot IS when I was getting my new camera recently, but I preferred the slimlines of mine.  Much easier to pocket, whereas the powershot was that little big bulkier.  Similar price and capabilities in the respects that I was after too.

I now have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 and am very happy with it.  Macro capabilities are awesome (to only a cm or two), which was one of the reasons I bought it.  I loved my old Lumix as well, which was also a good reason to buy the newer version.  Here, it and the Powershot IS were identical prices, but the Lumix won out for being much slimmer and fitting into a pocket when necessary. 8)
