Every year one of the most famous and popular places to visit in Holland
spring, is the flower bulb garden Keukenhof in Lisse.
This park of 32 hectares (80 acres) since last week opened again and this
year celebrates its 60th Anniversary.
I will show you some pictures which I made in week 12 of this year.
If there is demand for, I could show some pictures every week.
The park will be opened for public till May 16th.
The first pictures give some impressions of the park where very old trees
are under planted with spring bulbs.
In October when there is special Bulb Market for the public during a few days,
the park is open for public too (Free entrance) and I made last year some
pictures which I show sometimes to show the difference.
On pic. 3 you see mass planting of Crocus. When they are over here will flower
Double Early Tulips in April.
The other pictures speak for themselves.

If there is demand for, I could show some pictures every week.
Yes, please, Luit!!
Thanks for the walk :-*
-
Thomas, I had some more pictures for the first posting, but had
other things to do first.
So I'll take my camera next time with me.
Outside in the park mostly Crocus and Iris reticulata give the color,
but there are huge glasshouses where always is something to see,
like Tulips, Narcissus , etc.

In the last batch some examples how beds are planted with
early Crocus and Tulips.
In the same bed already late Tulips are coming up for display
later in the season.
There are some Corylopsis which must have been planted in the
early years of this show garden.

Very nice Luit !!
My favourite so far is the Tulip Lamoraal van Egmond - very fine red markings on the inside !!!
-
Luit,
Wonderful gardens and what a display of spring bulbs, simply amazing. I am also struck by the obvious excellent standard of maintenance in the garden - witness the perfectly cut edges to the grass etc.
Many thanks for an excellent walk in the park.
Paddy
-
More please Luit ;D
-
nice to see! i was there with a school group in '81!
we were doing a bicycle trip through parts of Holland, and i have to say, Paddy--at least at that time, virtually the whole country is maintained to that immaculate standard ;)
-
I can only agree with David.
More pictures please. So we can see the "new bulbs" for the next spring. And my list get longer and longer.
-
Thank you all for your nice comments!
Keukenhof Week 2.
Here is the first batch of pictures I made this Week.
In two months about 700.000 people visit the park every year.
As I live not far away, I can visit the park early in the morning
before the crowds are coming in.
So it's possible for me to show pictures (almost) without people.
This week outside not much progression with temps around 8 C.
Here some overall shots first:

Luit,
wunderful picture tour. 8)
Please continoue ;) :D
-
Thank you Luit !
What would we do without our reporter "in the field" ??
-
Great pictures Luit, you are fortunate to live so close, I was most impressed when I last visited Keukenhof, and, as we were in our own car, was able to spend most of the day there. Thanks for rekindling the memories.
-
I presume the Park is open on Wednesdays Luit? ;D
-
You are very welcome David, but it is a big garden.
You'll need a day or so and good shoes..... ;)
-
Week 3:
When so many people visit this garden and the weather is not so nice,
it is possible to visit several pavillions where always is something to see.
In the so called Beatrix Pavillion is a permanent orchid show.
Here are a few pictures:

WOW. 'Vanda Blue Magic' is a dream Luit, the other ones are nice too but I mustn't be tempted!

Lovely :) :) :) :)
-
Luit,
in the glasshouse. Are these "new" cultivars ? Or why where they are growing in the glasshouse?
A stupid question, but the time I stay years ago they have a lilac show there and so I ask myself why they grow tulips in the glasshouse.
-
Uli, I expect that you know the weather in Holland does not mean: always sunshine? ;)
I wrote on this page :
When so many people visit this garden and the weather is not so nice,
it is possible to visit several pavillions where always is something to see
When it is cold and wet and windy outside, people can see inside many bulbs or other plants.
You may say when the weather is not nice I don't go there, but if you arranged your
travel and are here you will go there, despite bad weather.
And the tulips inside are a lot earlier than outside and the people who come early in the
season want to see tulips and picture them.
Are these "new" cultivars ?
There are indeed many rather new varieties too.
All the bulbs you see are delivered for free by the Dutch bulb growers or traders.
In the whole garden every year 7.000.000 bulbs are planted every year and "Keukenhof"
does not pay for them.

I'm enjoying your tours, Luit. Thank you!

Some pictures of week 4.
Mostly we go for a visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to
avoid the crowds.
This week we had one day so beautiful weather and we decided to cycle through
the area and make a short visit too.
When we arrived the parking areas were almost full, but for bicycles there
is always a place just near the entrance.
Now I can show you how the garden looks with many visitors.
I show some pics too, how it looks after 5 p.m. on a not so nice day to compare.

Luit,
simply beautiful 8)

Gorgeous Luit. We really must try to visit next year.

What a beautiful place - I feel just as walking around there.
Thank you for these impressions Luit!
Gerd
-
These visits give us great pleasure .... while it is lovely to see so many people enjoying their day out in the sunny gardens, I must admit I like it better in the early hours when it is so calm and quiet!
-
They should pay you for all this free publicity Luit ! ;D
You're a great ambassador ! ;D
Lovely pictures by the way ! ;)
-
I don't like it either to visit such places when over crowded.
From week five I mostly show pictures from early in the morning.
The garden opens at 8 am (M.E.T.) and this week the sun was just giving some warmth.
That is shown in the early taken pictures which look a bit 'foggy'.
-
Week 5, batch two
-
Fantastic display, beautifully photographed, Luit.
-
Luit,
I can unlimited concur Anne. Fantastic. 8) 8) 8)
I've sent you an e-mail ;)
-
Week five, batch three
-
Thank you Anne and Armin.
Armin I saw your mail… ;)
last batch week five:
The last two pictures show, how it looks when I leave the Garden,
about two hours after I came in.
I heard today that yesterday 29000 visitors were counted!
-
0800 is an ideal time to visit Luit, but I would need a strong coffee and a bacon sandwich at 0745 and another strong coffee and chocolate cake to end the visit ;D
-
Luit,
super pictures (as always ;))
What is the name of this Narcissus (pic. Keukenhof 5 35)?
That's a nice color combination.
-
That's a nice color combination.
That is why I made the picture Armin ;D
As it is not a small Narcissus, I thought the name not being important to most Forumists.
But the name is Narcissus Chantarelle
-
Luit,
thank you. I think it is a nice cut flower (for my wife ;)).
Must watch when it is offered for sales.
-
So, it's not just Tulips then! I guess I've only heard more than saw about the Keukenhof, so the pictures have been enlightening, thanks Luit.
-
I discoverd this thread late so I had a lot to enjoy.
Thanks a lot Luit :)
By the way many of us has mother-in-laws and wifes that like also the little bigger and more "vulgar double types" so if these also exists I would be happy to show them to my wife. ::) :o
It is such a pleasure to make these trips at the computer when I can not go in person.
Great work so hope more is coming.
Kind regards
Joakim
-
I had not found this thread until after my visit on Wednesday 22nd April. This was a glorious day, sunny and warm but never too hot, so here are some photographs.
- I was particularly taken with a tulip called 'Lady Jane' because it seems to combine the stature of a cultivated tulip with the delicacy of some of the species tulips.
- Early in my tour I was asked to stand to one side to allow the Queen of Sweden to pass. I think she is the lady on the right in the picture.
- The view of bulb fields is taken looking out from the garden.
-
Some more pictures
- Fortunately, you cannot make out the incredibly cheesy poster at the end of the Muscari river
- Can someone help me remember the name of the plant with the white forget-me-not-like flower in the 'Mixed' picture?
- During my time in the garden I kept encountering a male singer with a group of accompanying ladies shooting a video. This involved singing along to a recording of his song over and over again - quite hard work as it really wasn't that great a song. The chorus sounded something like "Hey, paper blue men, paper rosen" if you say it in English {blue men = blumen = flowers ; rosen = roses; paper = ???} Who is this guy!?!
-
Wonder if the Queen of Sweden got a good deal on a flight, too? ;)
You travel in exalted company, Alan.... the rather dated looking crooner excepted, of course!
What a lovely place it is..... no surprise that it is so busy.
In the parks and gardens of the UK there are always bridal parties having their photos taken.... is the Keukenhof used for this purpose also ?
-
... In the parks and gardens of the UK there are always bridal parties having their photos taken.... is the Keukenhof used for this purpose also ?
Yes it is. What's more "a bridal pair, with photographer and bridesmaids, has free access"! See "Bride & Groom" here http://www.keukenhof.nl/faq/b/
(select the Union Flag for the English version).
-
That's very sporting to offer free access.... must qualify as the least expensive aspect of a modern wedding, that, don't you think? ;D
-
Alan, you were there in the morning I see, because you spotted the Royalties ;D
The other Royalty is Princess Maxima
It is good to see pictures of someone else with a different view.
You were very lucky with the weather and the garden is at the moment really beautiful.
I'll have a look for your forget me not like flowers, but am not sure where you saw them.
There are several places with mixed plantings, but I presume it was not far from the place where
you made the picture of the bulbfields??
The young lady group was still at work till 5 pm. I did not see the male singer anymore, so cannot help.
The music I heard, while they were filmed was not really what I liked ;D ;D
-
Thank you for your reply, Luit. I think I should know the name of that white flower; maybe it is a white-flowered green-leaved form of Brunnera macrophylla but I don't think the leaves were big enough. I think it was in one of the "family" gardens, or in that area of the garden.
Here are a few more photos featuring sculptures.
-
Just see that uploading works again :D
By the way many of us has mother-in-laws and wifes that like also the little bigger and more "vulgar double types" so if these also exists I would be happy to show them to my wife. ::) :o
Kind regards
Joakim
Joakim, do you mean pictures like these two?
I did not make many such, I'm afraid.
Thought that most Forumists would not really like them... :-\, but forgot about the mother-in-laws and wifes ;D ;D 8)
But the double late tulips just started to bloom, so I will look what I can do.
-
In the following batches I want to show a bit more details of using bulbs,
though there are some other pictures too.
One picture shows part of a mass planting (10 x 2 m.) of yellow Muscari along tulips.
and I pictured a old white Magnolia with some branches, sporting to pink flowers.

This year Keukenhof Gardens have chosen for a theme:
USA, New Amsterdam - New York.
Therefore they planted a flowerized Statue of Liberty
I pictured how it looked in October when it was planted and some pics of March and April.

You're a top PR man for them ! ;D

The last batch of Week 6:
-
I didn't know that there was such a wonderful topic here in the forum devoted to Keukenhof. I found it just yesterday when googling.
I got lots of positive and nice impressions when reading the topic.
Luit, your tulip photos helped me even to identify my mislabeled unknown greigii tulip that I received from Dix's Export couple of years ago. I hope you remember that we discussed this theme in last year's tulipa thread here
http://www.srgc.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1060.150
I nearly identifyed my mislabeled greigii tulip 'United States' as greigii 'First Impression'. And your picture of tulipa 'First Impression' in this thread made me sure about that. This autumn I received real 'United states', which looks quite different and with very slightly mottled leaves.
As to the tulipa send under the name "Lovely Surprise', which is shown in the thread as 'Tschaikovsky'; I think it is another new introduction - tulipa 'Donald Duck'. But I am still not sure as I can't found its picture with open flowers where I can see how it is coloured inside and the base colour. So I would kindly ask you to photograph this tulip if you come across to it.
DHT tulip 'Orange Balloon' impressed me a lot and I will include it in my wants list. It'll be a good match for my another orange DHT non-commercial 'Orange Goblet'.
Gregii tulip 'Giant Orange Sunset' is now in bloom in my garden. It is very large-flowered one, which surprises all my visitors. The only serious shortcoming, in my opinion, is that it lacks harmony - huge flowers are held in rather short stems, the proportions are broken). In general, it is interesting, but is not that perfect.
There is another greigii new introduction with huge flowers and massive leaves and stems 'Red Smile' bred again by D.W. Lefeber. I grow this as well and think thatt 'Giant Orange Sunset' doesn't surpass 'Red Smile' by its flower sizes all; though tulipa 'GOS' is considered the largest-flowered tulip nowadays.
-
Can someone help me remember the name of the plant with the white forget-me-not-like flower in the 'Mixed' picture?
Alan, this week I found your white mystery flowers.
In this showy garden were used both Brunnera and Myosotis.
When planted rather close and they are flowering the leaves are always smaller.
I show some pictures I made there.
For me it was one of the more lovely and inspiring small gardens in the park.

Thank you, Luit. I think it must have been the white form of Brunnera that caught my attention, being a little larger than a Myosotis (Forget-me-not). I would quite like to try to reproduce the effect achieved in the Keukenhof bed in my garden. I wonder if Brunnera Dawson's White comes true from seed?
-
Very beautiful Photo's Luit you must at least have a Presscard. When you are at the Keukenhof next week i will be there too on the 7th building up for the Lillyparade.
-
Gerard, when the weather is good enough, it's possible that I meet you.
Are you there in the morning?
I hope there will be many entries from the L. Comp. Andijk.
The other ones are not so my favourites... ::) ::) ;D
-
During the last week I made pictures outside in the park and inside in the
exhibition hall.
On the first picture it seems that a girl can walk on the water.
Then some park overviews and some pictures of planting combinations.
-
In batch two some pics of Lisianthus inside the hall, where it is a bit dark
to make good photo’s and several pictures in the garden.
-
Luit,
thanks for posting.
All those lovely images are still quite very fresh in my memories.
Could not take any pictures due empty battery of camera when I was there last week.
-
We will be there before openingtime till 3 or 4pm and i have heard that the l company will take care of the species one's.
-
Some pictures of a special Lathyrus Show in the hall.
-
Last batch of week 7 showing Rhododendron.
Could not make a choice, so some are almost the same :-\ :)
-
Luit your photos show a really stunning garden - amazing for someone who lives in dry grazing land.
I do love lathyrus -and you showed some pretty strong ones. I do prefer the smaller older varieties as in most plants.
-
Well, Luit, you will know how much I love to see such fabulous rhododendrons 8) but I am speechless at these Lathyrus...... to see these in such glorious profusion at this time of year is just a joy. Another time when /I wish we could get the fragrance on our computers... the hall must have smelled delicious.
-
Luit You chose a perfect tulip for my mother-in-law so if You find more of these I bet there are more mother-in-laws that would enjoy them. 8) :o ::)
Thanks for this lovely thread
Kind regards
Joakim
-
Luit having lived in Australia and thinking that I have been living in the bush too long I have not heard of Keukenhof Gardens so please excuse my ignorance when I ask if everything you have shown is grown IN the garden - the sweetpeas?? and staged exhibits???
-
Hi Pat, obviously Keukenhof Gardens did not manage to get to the Australian bush so far.
And they mean they are World Famous. (well, I thought so too :-\ ;D
Here is the Link, where you will learn more about:
http://www.keukenhof.nl/ (http://www.keukenhof.nl/)
-
They appear quite a big attraction indeed. From the platform which I get my train from in Leiden most days I can see the bus stop for the Keukenhof. It's great to see all the happy and tired looking faces of all ages and nationalities getting off, and a new bunch jumping on. I'll have to get on that bus myself soon enough.
-
Such a great advertisement for these wonderful gardens, Luit, they ought to be paying you for this. I've been spellbound, and now I want to make that trip.... maybe next year!
-
I am glad you all like this Thread!
Paul, you should not wait too long if you want to go there.
I was there today and in the garden still are many flowers, but one can see it's going
to an end slowly.
But if you want to see many lilies, then you might go from 16th May on.
The special Lily Parade promises to be a great spectacle.
Chris, one of the profits of being a pensioner is that I can go there real cheap.
We bought to two tickets for the whole season and payed totally 80 Euro's and we (edit L.)
may go whenever we want with car parking inclusive.
A day ticket is 13.50 + 6 Eur. per person for parking !
Being payed by a free ticket would burden me with some duties, which I maybe don't like.
I rather be free! :D
-
Know just what you mean, Luit.... there are benefits to becoming a pensioner. Here we get to ride all the public buses free. I'm off on one tomorrow to a gardening talk in Newcastle about herbaceous potentillas. The fare is £5 if you don't have a bus pass! My membership to the RHS allows me access to the Alnwick Garden free until the end of April, but there isn't much to see there until now. But there are concessions to other places, though not usually a lot. They make most of their money from tourists don't they?
-

What a truly remarkable place the Keukenhof is.... and how lucky we are to have Luit and Vroni visiting to bring us such a report of week after week...... we must be among the people who have seen the best of the place.... even as much as those who can visit each week ..... we are seeing SO MUCH! It is all a delight.... and I hope I am not the only one who thinks that the lovely rhododendrons and azaleas make a super addition to the bulbs?!!
-
Glad you like it Maggi, but it's a pleasure to go there for us several times a week. :D :D
So much interesting to see!

Many visitors (an we too) are much impressed by beds with mixed tulips in the garden.
Here some examples:

Tulipa Triumph Gr. Tequila Sunset

These mixed tulips are very pleasing to the eye. Near the mixed azaleas they are even more lovely.
-
Luit,
I'm still enjoying every day of my visit when seeing these wonderful pictures. 8)

During the last week that Keukenhof is open for the public, there is an enormous Lily Show in the
glasshouses.
Tomorrow is the last opening day. I was there last Sunday and made some pictures in the garden
which I will show later.
As it's very good weather here I spend most of the time outside in our garden, so picture
resizing, labelling and choosing which I show here comes second.

Great batch of lilies. I enjoy them a lot. They also do fairly well with me in Portugal the mixed hybrids at least.
David the beastly beetles are fairly easy to kill if one start early in the season and just keeps after the small larvae that eat the foliage straight of the beetles just makes some holes so not good for showing but not a great garden problem. It is their larvae that is the problem. People have tried to use products used against ants on the ground and just shake the lilies so that the beetles fall into it and also the larvae.
I just hunt and kill them and so far very successfully in Portugal. After the first storm I KILLED MOST most of the adults but some had laid eggs that became larvae but those are easily killed so the last two month have not had more.
Do not give up see it as a sport (they even scream).
All the best

In the same pavillion was since last Sunday a special Show from the Wakefield Tulip Society.
All the exhibits were displayed in beer bottles, which were packed in crates and driven
to Holland overnight, after the yearly Wakefield Tulip Show (I believe?) on Saturday before.
Many visitors were very impressed to see these old flamed tulips in a special Show.

Deal!

Four days before Keukenhof closed, it rained very heavily during the night before.
Many flowers suffered of course by that but there was still a lot to see in the garden.
I made a few pictures, mostly of interesting ancient tulips in the Historic Garden.

Dank voor het tonen van de foto's. De beelden van tulpen waren uitzonderlijk. Natuurlijk, hield ik werkelijk van de Maatschappij Wakefield!

Thank you Vivien. Interesting to read this.
Looking at the publication date, they probably lurked at the Forum and found some news to fill the paper. ;D ;D
